I serve as Senator for Ireland at the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF), affiliated with the G20’s Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion, and as a board member of the WBAF Global Science, Technology & Innovation Committee. I also co-founded the Digital Transformation Lab at Cork University Business School (UCC), a think tank focused on digital transformation. In executive education, I am a faculty member at the Institute of Bankers in Ireland, delivering programmes on digital disruption in financial services and fintech.

Fifteen years ago, I was a manager at Deloitte, ten years into my career and up for promotion. At home, I had a five-month-old baby. 

Ambitious and determined, I returned from maternity leave early. I believed performance would speak for itself and threw myself into work. What I did not anticipate was how differently I would suddenly be perceived and treated.

I grew up in Southeast Asia, where dual-career households were the norm. Competence and parenthood were not seen as incompatible.

In Switzerland, it felt different - subtle comments, assumptions about my priorities, suggestions that I should “slow down” and focus on family. Decisions about my ambition seemed to be made for me.

One evening, after a difficult day, I sat alone at the end of a hallway gathering myself before going home. A colleague, Hugh, also up for promotion, stopped to check in. I shared honestly that it was harder than expected to be treated differently after becoming a mother, a little teary eyed as I spoke.

A few days later, I learned he had reported me to leadership out of “concern” that I was burned out and emotionally unstable. Soon after, I was asked to step back, my responsibilities were reduced to mostly admin work, and no surprise, he was promoted. 

The bias in the system was not examined, but the person experiencing it was managed. THAT was the moment I decided to leave Deloitte, not out of shame or disappointment, but to demonstrate there was a better way. 

My advice:
I learned that bias rarely arrives as open hostility. It shows up as concern, as decisions made on your behalf. To women navigating leadership today: don’t internalize structural discomfort as personal inadequacy. Protect your narrative and choose carefully who you confide in when stakes are high. Ambition and motherhood are not in conflict, only certain systems make them so.

Best decision of my professional life:
I founded Lardi & Partner Consulting after leaving, and made a conscious decision to build differently. And 14 years in, I am proud to say that performance is measured by outcomes, not optics. Parental transitions are structured, not sidelining. Vulnerability and emotional expression is not equated with instability. When I graduated in 1999, I started going for job interviews, incredibly excited to kick of my career in tech. One of my first interviews was with a small medical technology company, SSP Medical Technologies, where I met with the CIO. 

Throughout the conversation, he kept asking whether I was comfortable filing documents and making coffee for the team. After a moment, I asked whether those duties were required for the tech analyst role I was interviewing for. 

The interviewer threw his head back and laughed out loud. ''That role is too technical for you, you can be the office manager.'' 

His response shocked me, but I calmly showed him my qualifications. My honors degree, deep technical background and experience in coding. He still would not accept that a woman could perform a technical role. So we concluded the interview, but as I walked out of the room, I recognized someone in the corridor: the Head of Business Development. Before the interview, I had done my research about the company, and knew there was an open position on his team as well. In a moment of courage, I stepped forward, introduced myself to him, and asked if I could interview for that open position.

I was hired into the Business Development team, my first job out of university. And within a few weeks, I was not only performing that role, but had also taken on tasks from the IT team (the technical analyst had still not been hired). By the time I left that job a few months later to join Andersen Consulting (Accenture), I had successfully completed projects across both roles. On my last day at SSP, the CIO congratulated me on taking on the tech tasks, with a slight smirk on his face. I have been breaking barriers and mindsets ever since 😏

Looking back, I often think about that moment. The shame I had felt at being mocked, the bias in an industry I was passionate about, the determination to prove my worth. But also the courage that I had somehow found in myself at that young age. If I had not pivoted quickly, that interview could easily have shattered my confidence, and possibly pushed me away from a career in technology altogether. 

As we approach International Women's Day on 8th March, my article reflects on how much has actually changed in the tech industry since that day. Please like and share

Women in tech in the age of AI: A moment of opportunity and responsibility

Unfortunately, this is not the first time the tech broligarchy has shown us who they are, yet we remain silent. And they are not held accountable for their harmful actions. 

Last week, there was a global celebration for International Women's Day, performative allyship showcased across LinkedIn and other socials, as companies and people boldly proclaimed the importance of diversity in tech. And yet this week, Palantir Technologies CEO #AlexKarp shared his rant on CNBC - his AI technology will lessen the power of ''highly educated, often female voters who vote mostly Democrat'', while increasing the economic power of ''working-class, often male voters.''

His bold message is clear - AI technologies build by his company, currently one of the most sophisticated in the market and widely used across industries, will take political and economic capital away from educated women. 

This is a weapon disguised as a business strategy. AND this is the reason we NEED more diversity in tech, because the people currently leading the industry, building powerful technologies and embedding it into critical areas of our lives, are not only biased, but proactively trying to tip the scales away in a detrimental way.  

Technology is neutral, but the people who build and use it are not. The future of AI should not be built to silence women. The only way to avoid this is to ensure technology is built by women, to enable women.    

My call to action #1 -> business leaders and decision makers, is this the company and technology you want to support? Is this the mindset you want to propogate? Does this align with your company and values? We need to stop this with clear action - #banPalantir 

My call to action #2 - stop giving this harmful rethoric a platform and reach. Shame on CNBC for promoting this harmful proclamation on their platform, and shame on the media reporting on it without condemning the narrative.
