Start 2 Continue began as an independent video game news site that focused on small, upcoming developers (usually through Kickstarter or other crowdfunding campaigns) and provided alternative opinions on trends that contrasted with mainstream media in the industry. Now it focuses on supporting gamer content creators -- whether they're content creators who make content *for* gamers or professionals in other industries who enjoy gaming as a hobby.

Our site now focuses on becoming a resource for gamers and those who work within the industry, from strategy guides on how to play a game better to how-to guides on how to solve common problems such as content monetization as a streamer or video editor or exploring issues within the gaming industry that can be solved through better content marketing.

We have a very active Discord of 550+ community members that acts as a creative sandbox, allowing gamers to interact with indie developers, entrepreneurs, and content creators, allowing everyone to learn, network, and grow in the ways that are most important to them.

My story of ADHD, struggle, and what came next:

Back in 2009, I had no life to be proud of. I had been single after a terrible breakup. High school didn’t prepare me for what came next, and no one wanted to hire me. I always felt different in the way that I think and wanted to do something with it. I then enrolled in college and failed most of my courses. I was crushed.

Most people told me “just try harder” and I’ll get what I want. But this wasn’t so easy with a brain like mine. I told myself to keep doing what I knew. Which was to hang out with the same crowd, doing the same stuff, and having the same outcome. It was comfortable and I was good at it. But something had to give because I wasn’t happy anymore, and completely lost.

That’s when a close friend of mine asked me to go out with her more often. She did things differently. That put me around a different crowd that gave me confidence to volunteer. This led to a job offer which made me more confident to start up college again. Although my mind felt messy, my emotions were getting better.

The problem was that I had no structure, no accountability, zero purpose, barely any support, stuck in my thoughts and felt lost constantly. I had ADHD and didn’t know it. That’s why in 2012 things changed for the better. 

My plan was to start being honest and take myself more seriously as a human. I knew I wanted to help people but I had to help myself first.

The results:

➔ happily married
➔ became a therapist
➔ am a published author 
➔ now getting a doctorate 
➔ building a business publicly

And now I want to share what I’ve learned on this path to those who may have felt like me back in 2009. Just like you, I had to learn what works, what doesn’t, and figure out how to move to the next part while keeping what I’ve built in tact.

Once I made these needed adjustments using research, tools, training, and personal experience, I could finally say that I feel a bit more found rather than lost. After 20+ years of struggle and hard work, I’m proud to say that I feel great in my relationships, confident in academics, and productive in my career.

These books have a few things in common.

Strong trends of public outcry in how unhelpful, unscientific, and wrong they are. Which is understandable.

And public discourse in these books have opened doorways of curiosity for a lot of hurting people. 

I’ve had my back and forths with professionals on this. My current consensus isn’t anything amazing, but tried and true.

I still trust that whatever works for the individual, works. I’ve come to understand there’s too much expertise in a person to question their choices if they think it will benefit their life. I simply can’t knock that.

I also acknowledge not everything is even keeled in these popular books, and perhaps how this information was actually acquired. And before I criticize these publically, I cannot forget what they’ve done for others.

But what are your honest thoughts about these books? Do not take my word for it. I’d rather know yours.

- overabundance of attention, not deficit
- sleep circadian rhythm challenges
- sensory processing difficulties 
- rejection sensitive dysphoria 
- neurobiological elements 
- emotion dysregulation 
- gender differences 
- racing thoughts 
- time blindness 
- genetic data
- rumination

All of which comes up as I write my dissertation in 2025.

A letter to RSD,

I don’t like you. And I know you certainly don’t like me either. And it also feels like others don’t like me because of you. I just don’t like this whole thing at all.

You feel like a visual virus that I can’t unsee or not feel when I want to connect with others. This emotional pain is too much, and I want to be around people because it does get lonely. And I think at the core of it, I honestly feel deep betrayal and shame.

I hide from people. Don’t text them back. Make up stories uncontrollably that never happened or I’m afraid will happen. I’m convinced any step I make to be social will put me in a position of severe rejection. Or worse, I’ll be seen for everything else I can’t stand and criticized for it.

But despite this. Despite you. I will prevail, I think. You may have undermined my every move, my every thought. But I know I’m getting better in regulating you. Better in managing the humiliation. And think you know this too.

How do I know this though? Well, I can talk about it more. I can unveil your atrocity in public because stigma doesn’t have its way with me. I can acknowledge Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria took my power and I’m tired of it, and can and have done something about it. I’m doing it right now.

So until we meet again (probably tomorrow), I will be 1% stronger than you. And the best part is that you’re replaceable. I can certainly practice replacing your ways with self-compassion. Because I know I’m worthy of it.

ADHD feels like one big riddle that you don’t know how to solve. Also, you made up the riddle.

Probably one of my most serious posts. As a therapist who has treated many people for a long time, it’s not uncommon suicide becomes a topic.

I’ve written online about it before, and I’m careful about it. Not because talking about it makes someone want to do that, that’s a myth.

But because I honestly care about every person I seem to speak to. I don’t know if it’s the helper in me, empathy, or just the fact people have a soul worth caring for.

Suicidal thoughts can get the better of anyone who struggles with it. It could be because of financial concerns, challenging upbringing, detrimental relationships, or all the above.

Many suffer in silence with these thoughts, and yes, sometimes they can progress to plans and action, but there is another side of this.

My goal is to help identify quality hope. Anytime I’m talking to someone, I truly do think they have good reason behind their intention with suicide. Yet, I notice we’re talking about, so I know there’s so much more on their mind.

Often, when you provide enough warmth, and being human, and say “tell me more” you’d be surprised what people disclose to you, because they are seeking connection, I think.

And in addition to the darker thoughts to end it all, are curious thoughts of “maybe if I can last another day. Just one more day.” And that’s where hope lives. Even if it’s small.

The importance here is to connect. Connect with a professional. Connect with a friend. Call or text 988. Get out of isolation even if you think that’s the only answer.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As a therapist, I’ll keep it simple. I’m truly and utterly thankful that humans appear to have been made to heal through healthy connections with others. It’s amazing.

I’m in the business of helping humans navigate human experiences. One of which is having rich social relationships. I can’t explain how we were able to figure this out, but we did.

And I’m filled with gratitude knowing that I’m blessed to be in a position where I get to be a part of a glimpse in thousands of lives in therapy. Building one rich connection at a time.

ADHD feels like an ongoing project of an unclear path that leads to nowhere, and you decide to keep going anyway.

I’d like to know your thoughts on something that happened to me last night.

A popular content creator on TikTok who talks about regulating the nervous system posted about how people are not actually regulating their nervous system efficiently. They gave a lot of reasons why others are not providing the correct way to do this. And that what people are doing now is not really helping for long term gains at all.

They then eluded to knowing the answer as far as I could tell.

Dozens of comments were saying “so what really helps then?” Many of those comments were not responded to. A few were responded with “I talk about it on my podcast” or some other separate video. So the therapist in me wanted to help.

I proceeded to share one example in how one could try to regulate their nervous system (step-by-step for educational purposes) for long term gains according to my scope of practice, competence as a therapist, and evidence based research. I wanted to share what I knew publically.

Overnight this comment appeared to gain traction and people were starting to ask really good questions that I was ready and willing to answer. But I couldn’t…

This video was “no longer available” on TikTok due to being removed or set to private. Sooooo I did some digging.

Turns out, after scrolling through my search history, all the videos I did happen to see of theirs were removed. Not a single video is available to me. I don’t even know their name so I can’t look them up either.

I can’t say I know the reason why this happened. Perhaps, I was blocked from them. Or their TikTok was taken down. I haven’t the clue.

This content creator does seem to help a lot of people in other videos (I think). But I only know them more in the context of this one video in particular that I happened to comment on.

I’d like to know your thoughts. What do you think is going on?

Therapists, here me out.

When did it become more common to disapprove a therapy modality and then encourage people to recoil from professionals if they happen to use it?

It puts such a bad taste in my mouth, and for reasons that run deep.

On one hand I get the purpose of education for the sake of spreading knowledge about modalities. This is a step toward access I think - especially using social media. And we want people to feel safe enough as far as I can tell. But I can’t seem to put myself in the way of someone else’s self determination when they decide to seek therapy in general.

I suspect there’s a path that educates the public about modalities while respecting their autonomy and independence. I mean, volition and self governance is often the very thing that was taken away from many of our clients, and for some of us, ourselves. Involuntary experiences have plagued many people with what feels like permanent pain.

Why would I then add another layer of directing someone away from certain modalities in ways that may be familiar to them (e.g., “I know better than you”). Even if the intention is good, at what risk will this impact their perspective on therapy? Who knows. I certainly don’t.

I think you can give other people just enough information about therapy without spilling out how unacceptable you think a common modality is, and requesting individuals to deter from other professionals who may use it.

I simply can’t see myself doing that or I’d feel like I’ve just taken their power. The worst feeling. But, continue to educate, and also acknowledge the power you have with your words.

But what are your honest thoughts about this? Do not take my word for it. I’d rather know yours.

ADHD feels like playing an unlimited game called ‘waiting mode’ between levels.

Sometimes I think what would happen if we were to rethink sensitivity in all work environments. 

I suspect: 

productivity would go through the roof
satisfaction would also increase quite a bit
understanding and empathy would be normal

win-win-win, perhaps

“You don’t need more confidence to do hard things.”

Uhm. Let’s face it. Sometimes you do. 

And you do this by taking newer steps (voluntarily) toward something challenging and worthwhile.

Confidence doesn’t build with each step generally. It builds after you’ve noticed how many moves you made to get to this exact moment.

From there, confidence helps propel you toward the idea of efficacy, and what was once challenging is now normal.

Finding out you have ADHD can be a grieving experience. You learn this about yourself and realize there could have been more support and opportunity for you if only you had known sooner.

Even with this knowledge, there's a disconnect you feel. Sure, maybe you can connect with others here and there with high intensity. But you notice something missing, something empty perhaps.

You begin to notice how others seem to fit into this world. You've watched this for years, maybe even decades, wondering, feeling sadness, pain, or even resentment. You have good reason to lean into jealousy or envy because you know there's more for you out there.

This is the conundrum with ADHD: your mind sees and knows so much, and others may see that as helpful, but you know it's overwhelming. You may even love parts of yourself yet still wish you could swap your brain with someone else's.

You want to start and complete one thing at a time. You want to move forward without procrastination. You want to remember more often and forget less. You have good reason to want all of this.

My hope for you is to consider focusing on… you. Comparing yourself to yourself, not to the world. Yes, there will be standards you admire, but focusing on those all day may be doing something harmful to your mind. Maybe even something deeply negative.

Grow. Strive. Learn. Develop. You can do these things in your own time and at your own pace. Even with ADHD, you're still a person. You can still experience your life, not the life of others.
