I ignored the platform through my 12 years as a practicing attorney. 

It was only after I left the practice in late 2021 that I started paying more attention to the platform. 

Watching what folks like Darren McKee and Robb Gilbear were doing, I realized LinkedIn wasn't what I thought it was...

The most boring social media network on the planet. 
The world's biggest online bulletin board. 
The place to stash my digital resume. 

I started to see LinkedIn as a place to: 
• express myself genuinely 
• meet interesting people 
• create opportunities. 

I didn't have my own business then. That came later. 

What set me on that trajectory was recognizing that I'd learned LinkedIn the wrong way. 

And if I approached this platform differently, I could get different results.

There has never been a better time to start posting on LinkedIn than right now. 

If that strikes you as the self-serving talk of a guy who sells LinkedIn stuff, fair enough. 

But I truly believe that. 
Here’s why. 

People love lamenting:
• How reach has dropped. 
• How terrible the algorithm is.
• How hard it is to get engagement. 

They’re almost always saying some version of—

My posts are not getting enough attention. 

That’s understandable. Indeed, organic reach appears down in a ton of circumstances. 

But organic reach is not actually the point. 

Nobody pays the rent with organic reach. 
Nobody buys a truck with likes and comments. 
Nobody covers their kids’ tuition with impressions. 

We all want Linky to shower us with organic reach. 
But reach is not the real goal. 

What we’re really after out here…

Is opportunities. 

New clients. 
The next hire. 
More customers. 
The next job offer.
More awareness that you’re the go-to expert in your domain and market. 

If I offered you 1 million impressions or 1 new client, which are you taking? 

I’m taking the client every time. 

And I don’t actually NEED more impressions to land more clients. 

What I can use is MORE people starting to pay attention to LinkedIn for the fist time. 

The more people who do that, the harder it might be to get organic reach. 

But that’s fine. Because it also means there are more people plugged into the network. 

Each of those people is another source of potential opportunities. 

This is why I’m not worried about the drop in reach. 
It’s corresponding with the LinkedIn network getting stronger. 

And if you’re consistently depositing your energy into this network, you’re building up your social capital here. 

That social capital has never been more valuable than it is today. 
And I’ll bet it all that social capital here will be more valuable a year from now than it is today.

That’s why I’ve never been as bullish on LinkedIn as I am right now.

As a geriatrician, physician executive, and lifelong advocate for dignity in aging, I've dedicated 15+ years to transforming care for older adults – particularly those living with dementia.

My journey from the Caribbean through the English Midlands, New York City, Florida, and Virginia has evolved me from clinician to leader, researcher to mentor, caregiver to changemaker.

CURRENTLY: Director of Statewide Graduate Medical Education at Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority, architecting initiatives that strengthen Virginia's physician workforce. As a National GME Fellow with AACOM, I contribute to strategies that future-proof America's physician pipeline.

MY MOST TRANSFORMATIVE WORK happened in patients' homes, providing primary care to geriatric homebound patients with complex needs. Today, the world celebrated women.

But tomorrow, the burden of being a woman returns.

The mental load of caregiving, childbearing, hormonal shifts, and career pivots - all of it signals chronic stress that quietly and steadily takes a toll on the brain.
Here is what we know - Women make up 2/3 of all Alzheimer's cases globally. 

The window to reduce this risk opens in the 40s, just when women are expected to care for everyone else and leave themselves behind. 

Don't get me wrong. Our celebration of International Women's Day matters. But one day of recognition does not change the biology shaped by years of unaddressed stress, disrupted sleep, hormone transitions, and a healthcare system that has historically favored men. 

What would make this day more meaningful? Women who are intentionally given the ability to freely invest in their brain health, with the same urgency and deliberation they use to invest in everything else. Not someday, or after the kids have grown up, or even after the promised promotion comes, or life slows down. It never will. 

But now. 
Today. 
When there is still a chance to decrease the risk of dementia. 

Brainspan is not guaranteed, but it is influenced by what we do, how we rest, what we eat, how we move, and whether we finally add ourselves to the to-do list. Your memories of you are counting on it. 

But for today, please celebrate and enjoy this International Women's Day. Women everywhere deserve recognition!

But tomorrow, let's get to work.

The best thing I brought to ACHE Congress this year wasn’t a business card or a networking strategy. 
It was a journal. 

I spent the busy week in the rooms with 7,000 healthcare executives. 
There were conversations and panels on AI, policy shifts, workforce gaps, leadership, financing and all the things, with the underlying pressures of the uncertainty of the future of clinical medicine as a common thread. 

It was a lot. No - it was a whole lot.

And yet, what anchored me through all of it had nothing to do with any session on the agenda. It was something my mother taught me growing up in the West Indies. 

She would say, “Ames, every night before bed, write your day down. Tous les jours. Every day.”

Healthcare has long worn stress and busyness as badges of success and honor. We glorify the packed schedule, the impossible caseload, the RVU’s, patient case mix, and the devoted, tireless doctor who never stops. I’ve spent the last part of my career studying what this culture has actually costed me, and my peers. It’s not just wellbeing or self care. It is costing us all shorter brainspans. 

Chronic stress is one of the most potent accelerants of cognitive decline and memory loss that we know of. This is a fact.

Now that I know and understand better, here is what this geriatrician does instead:
Nighttime journaling. Every night. Not negotiable. As my mom instructed.

For me, the sweet spot is just before bed. This is when the day’s noise has settled, the kids are in dreamland, and my busy mind is still buzzing with all of the things from the day, ideas and inspirations. This is my moment to really process. 
If you have not tried it - please do. 

Here are 3 tips you can use, without adding more to your plate. 

1. Don’t write in your journal about your day, instead write through the day. There is a difference. For example “I had back to back meetings” is a log. “Here’s what I think about what was said in that meeting”, is a moment to process and gain clarity.

2. Keep it ugly. (no, not your handwriting - mine is horrific and that is ok) This is not a diary where you need to perform or present to anyone. No complete sentences or perfect grammar are required. Sentence fragments, arrows, doodles, scribbles, half-formed ideas are perfect. The goal is to empty your brain as much and as freely as possible. 

3. End with one question and not an action or to-do-list. Before you close your journal, write down one question that has been circling your mind all day. Let your sleeping brain work on it. You will be surprised what shows up in the morning. 

If you are a woman navigating a high stakes career and wondering why your brain feels like a browser with 47 tabs open in all 25 windows, this is a sign to try this journaling technique. 

Take a moment, close the tabs and open up a journal (or notepad or sheets of paper)
Your brain will thank you in the morning and for decades to come.

Music is not background noise in my life. It’s never been.
It is deeply embedded in my memories, identity and joy.

I watched this recent interview with Kes, and found myself unexpectedly emotional.
There is something profoundly powerful about hearing Kes speak about his music, his heritage in the art and his father’s influence on him. I remember this moment of loss for his family. 
Most  important for me, though, is learning how his most meaningful songs were born in moments of intense emotion.
As someone who grew up in the Caribbean, I know this truth in my bones. No matter the island, music is always with us. It is how we celebrate. It’s in our food, conversations, friendships and daily lives. Music is how we remember who we are. For us West Indians, rhythm is not just entertainment. It is our lineage and culture.
And what moved me most was Kes’ openness with  his visible emotion as he reflected on his father’s impact. That kind of vulnerability signals artistry and a wash of memories in motion.

Here is what we now know from neuroscience:
Creative arts,  especially music, very deeply activate widespread neural networks. Even in moderate to advanced dementia, musical memory pathways often remain accessible when other cognitive domains falter.

Why?

Because music is encoded across multiple brain regions. It is in our emotion, movement, hearing centers, and long-term memory circuits. It is layered deeply. 

I have seen patients who struggle to recall their children’s names suddenly sing every word to a song from their youth. I have enjoyed their posture change as their faces open, eyes light up and personality shine through.

Music transcends memory loss. 

It unlocks parts of the brain we fear are gone.

That is why I bring music intentionally into my work with families who are trying to protect their brains and delay cognitive decline. We do not only prescribe labs and lifestyle plans. We protect identity and  joy.

And for me, Caribbean music is personal. Kes the Band is one of my favorites. 

Soca and calypso music take me back to my childhood days, family gatherings, grueling call days and exuberant days. It is dancing in the kitchen with my children while reflecting on my own identity.

So yes, I admire Kes not just as an artist, but as a cultural steward. His contribution to West Indian culture with his open vulnerability reminds me that we all share this language that is rooted in parts of our brains we don’t fully understand. And even when all seems lost the love and emotion music returns is profound. His interview demonstrates how deeply music connects us to a larger purpose.

It is a reminder that we are not powerless against cognitive decline.
We can protect the brain through movement, nutrition, sleep, social connection and yes, through creative arts.
Sometimes the most powerful prescription is a playlist.

I am truly honored to participate in this upcoming webinar alongside sharon napper and Phyllis Jones.

The U.S. POINTER study, inspired by the original Finnish FINGER model, provides something we have needed for a very long time in dementia care: a practical, evidence-based roadmap for prevention. It moves us beyond theory and into practical and attainable action.

This work is central to my clinic’s approach, particularly for caregivers, who face some of the highest risks of cognitive decline. For them, prevention is not abstract. It is strategic, intensive, and life-changing.

What makes U.S. POINTER especially powerful is its intentional inclusion of participants from diverse backgrounds. For decades, clinical research has too often failed to represent the very communities most affected by disease. And when it comes to dementia, minority populations carry a disproportionate burden.

Grounding my clinical guidance in the work led by Ms. Jones and her colleagues is both a privilege and a responsibility. I am proud to align my practice with science that is rigorous, inclusive, and actionable.

I am not a provider and I did not go to provider school.  
I do not identify as a provider nor do I respond when I am called a provider.

I am a physician.
I am a doctor.
I am a healer.

This is my identity.
I do not call anyone else a provider.

When we think about physician burnout or physician shortages, we are thinking about how we get the brightest, most empathetic and capable minds to care for our communities. The names that we use or how we categorize people matters. The word provider intrudes on our ability to be successful with recruitment, retention and overall satisfaction.

Names matter.

Everyday, there are countless changes and updates around healthcare. You can do something right on Monday, but have it be incorrect on Wednesday. From tech and AI changes to financial challenges, we are all recognizing our weaknesses. 
However, what is enduring is that engagement with our workforce and its resilience and growth needs our attention. In uncertain times, we need to look towards our partnerships, teams and leadership. 
This is why I am so excited about the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center’s first Summit on May 12 in Richmond VA. While everything else is in motion, this will be a room full of people dedicated to the long game and vision of strengthening the nursing workforce across the Commonwealth.
