But, it’s applicable to everyone in every aspect of life.

Here’s what it is:

2. Know the text
3. Have an idea

That's it.

Those things are ALL in your control.
They are YOUR job.

It makes you think about where we’re headed from a privacy perspective.

This is probably the best AI made content I’ve seen.

And if you just stumbled across it you wouldn’t have known.

The discussion around whether we will watch AI content isn’t really about the tech.

We will absolutely watch AI content and if it’s well made we’ll enjoy it.

It will sit alongside content that didn’t use it, and content that used some of it.

AI can generate voices.
But it needs help to tap into vulnerability.
AI can create content.
But it needs guidance to create connection.

The scariest part isn't replacing creators.
It's creators forgetting why they create.

When everyone can make films,
not everyone will make films that matter.

Tools don't create meaning,
humans do.

Your move isn't learning every AI tool.
Your move is remembering what they're for.

I spend my time between Bali, UK and Portugal with my wife (@lydiajanssenart) and 3 children. In my spare time I dive (PADI advanced), fly planes (CAA PPL), Skydive (USPA-B), Freedive (SSI-1), Sail (Sydney-Hobart 2004), Ski, Surf and rock climb. At my core I am a musician. I play piano, guitar, sing, write and record songs and whistle (International Grand Champion 2009)... that's right. I'm the best whistler on the planet!

You can't use AI to write code for you. You have to use it to help you code or debug or make your code more efficient etc.. You must understand the code you have written together. That is why older coders are better when it comes to using AI I think. They have more experience and can understand the code more and have seen more and fixed more.

I am hearing stories about code being written by AI that is buggy but the coders are unable to fix it because they don't understand it. We will see this more and more I think as coders want to core more quickly (or are lazy!)

You have to think of AI like a useful personal assistant. You wouldn't get your PA to do your job for you, but you would get him to help you do yours (see what I did there!)

Startup founders, you need to take a break from time to time. I recommend 3 to 4 days over a weekend. Not talking about your business but thinking about why you are doing what you are doing. Reconfirming what really matters to you and focusing on that and saying no to other things. 

I just spent 4 days with Will Travis and 6 other people at the Elevation Barn retreat in Bali (they run globally). It was excellent. Will runs it like he ran branding for top companies when he was slaying it at big agencies in New York.

With Will and my group of 6, I worked on:
✅ What really matters to me; 
✅ What I do really well; 
✅ What I am doing now; 
✅ What I really want to be doing in future; 
✅ What brings me joy
✅ And many other things.... 

The overall summary is that I am doing what I do for my family. To help them navigate the world (and get help from them too!) to live an adventurous life together. 

I have deep knowledge of startups. Starting companies, and growing them and raising money and selling them. And I can help other founders navigate those treacherous waters, and succeed, and they can transform their lives and families too. (short answer: its all about sales).

I also decided to reiterate my commitment to only work with purpose / impact driven founders which I did with Mangosteen Venture Studio. (Also so I can tell my mum I am doing good things!).

Lastly, and you are not going to believe this, but I did this new thing called "Yoga" (for 3 mornings in a row!), I think it originated in Korea or India or somewhere. And honestly all Yoga is, is breathing and stretching!

You are not going to believe this. I changed my religion on LinkedIn to ‘Atheist’ from ‘Catholic’ and my traffic went way up!

Does anyone else find it ironic that it is almost impossible to spell "bureaucracy". Bureaucracy itself (the thing, not the spelling) is something I truly hate. And that is why I love startups, there is way less of it. It is why I hate corporate, because they have lots of it. 

Committees go hand in hand with bureaucracy and are something I also hate. Don't have them. Be a smart person and make calls, talk to other smart people to get more information, but just make the decision and make it quickly, and if you are a good founder you will be right more often than not. If you are a not a good founder you will be wrong more often than not, and if that happens you should go back and work for Google or some other big corporate.

Valuations. What is my startup worth?!

At Tigerspike we always used to battle with VCs because they said our revenue was not 'recurring' and we said it was. Why did we want 'recurring revenue' not 'non recurring revenue'? Well at the time tech companies with recurring revenue were valued at 8 to 10 times that revenue. Whereas tech companies with non recurring revenue were valued at 0.5 to 2 times revenues.

You can see how this matters. When we raised our first round our revenue was about $13m. So we were worth $104m to $130m if our revenue was 'recurring' and $7m to $26m if our revenue was not. In the end we raised at $40m which was pretty good we managed to argue it, and we had competitive tension (which renders all of these calculations useless). 

Startups call this recurring revenue 'ARR' (Annualised Recurring Revenue). It is last month's revenue x 12 months. So if you made $100k last month in recurring revenue then your "ARR" is $1.2m. Many of the companies you see now saying their ARR is $Xm are stretching the truth. You can see why of course. 

For example an AI startup could get you to sign up for $50 a month on a contract that can be cancelled after 3, 6 or 12 months. The startup will say that this revenue is 'recurring' but it isn't really; it could be gone just as easily as it came. Lovable got to $100m in ARR in 8 months. But you know who else got to $100m within 12 months? IM8 (supplement company).

Honestly when I see revenue grow that much I think it is fragile. Look at Prime Hydration. $250m to $1.2b now it is nowhere. I think many of these AI companies are overhyped and I think their revenue is fragile; like the house of cards next, and my mischievous daughter is the next AI company that will come along and eat their lunch.

The biggest way to keep your revenue going is be nice to your customers. Be of value to them. And the issue with these 'easy to start AI companies' is that the way they will have to do that is price. Prices will have to come down.

There are many posts about Google vs openAI.  Google will win. 

- because Demis is far smarter than any other person in AI. 
- because Google has way more money. 
- because Google’s has other businesses to train all their models. 

In fact I think X.ai will come second for similar reasons, not least Elon’s ability to execute. The problem is OpenAI is too big to buy. Maybe Meta or someone else will make a low offer when it’s clear that OpenAI is struggling. They will become the sacrificial lamb that will bring sense back into the valuations but not kill the AI baby. 

Remember people are fickle now. As soon as Google is demonstrably better (which I think it pretty much is) people will switch.

People don’t care about the OpenAI brand. They just use GPT because it is the best / first. 

But ultimately it just comes down to the CEO and Sam just isn’t as smart as any of the others. He is about as smart as me. And that just isn’t good enough. :)

My son refused to drink this beer. But many say that young people should be drinking more. 

Get out and socialize with people. I was always better at networking when I had had a number of drinks. And I met my wife when I was a little baked. 

There is nothing more important than face to face when you are a founder. One of our biggest wins was when Olly and I flew to London from Sydney to pitch a big client.  We won it and London became our most profitable office for a time. 

Since you are such an introvert and hide behind text or email, try breaking that narrative by going to an event and getting a little tipsy.  

You don’t have to drink but it can help. You do have to get on the phone (talk on it) and get face to face.

Pay attention kids, this is how you land the job you want. 

You don’t call recruiters.  
You don’t put the open to work banner up.

3 controversial things I did to get a job at Sydney’s most viral $100m startup...

1) I didn't wait until they had a job position 
I wanted to work for Frank Greeff and Jacques Greeff 🦈 but they hadn't even started their new business

2) So instead of sending a boring resume, I sent a DM explaining how Frank's podcast helped me learn to start an ecommerce business and inspired me to invest in a US start up at 20 

3) I didn't wait until I had experience in the industry
I didn't know how I was going to figure out how to market an app to $100m and still make a tech product engaging on socials but I knew I would do whatever it took to learn along the way

(and here we are 7 months later)

PS. my grandma said to my brother the other day "tahlia's so lucky she doesn't have to work in like a real job, she just gets to make videos all day" (lol, fr though)
