If AI can build your website in an afternoon, what exactly are you competing on?

I’ve seen the “perfect” B2B website so many times i could rebuild it from memory:

- Sticky nav, Big hero H1, Product screenshots, Logo strip
- 3 feature cards, Gradient blob, Rounded corners, “Book a demo”

Sound familiar?

That’s because most B2B sites are built from the same checklist

And honestly, i get why

These patterns work. They’re safe. They convert enough.

But here’s the problem:

AI just made “good enough” instant

When anyone can generate a site in an afternoon, sameness becomes the default, not the exception

So if your plan to stand out is:
- nicer components
- cooler animations
- another “modern” redesign

…good luck. Your competitor can copy that by friday

The companies that win won’t have better UI

They’ll have:
- a sharper point of view
- clearer positioning
- a message that actually excludes people
- proof that feels specific (not “trusted by…”)

Because your design system isn’t your differentiator

And clarity isn’t a UI kit problem, it’s a strategy problem

I see this with 90% of B2B tech companies I audit

I look at their homepage. Scroll through the site. And it looks something like this:

- A hero section that explains the product, not the problem
- A mission statement nobody asked for
- A features list that means nothing to a buyer

Ending with "Book a demo"

Why would I? You haven't told me anything yet

Here's the thing:

Your website is where buyers decide if they want to work with you

Most companies are completely blowing it

The fix is a framework I call PATH

I've used it on every website I've rebuilt - and it's the difference between a site that looks good and one that actually converts

Here's how it works ↓

P - Pain Open with your buyer's exact problem. Use their words, not your product language. Show the cost of leaving it unsolved

A - Aspiration Show them there's a better state. List the outcomes they actually want - specific and tangible, not vague. Make them feel the gap between where they are and where they could be

T - Trust Show proof from someone exactly like them. Real numbers, real situations, real outcomes. Not logos. Not "Great tool!" Not a wall of features

H - Help Name exactly what you do and who it's for. Make the next step obvious and frictionless. One clear CTA. Not two. Not three. One

Your website is either working for you or against you

There's no in between

Every visitor is a chance to convert a stranger into a conversation

Go make it count

3+ years of running a design agency and I could count on one hand how many clients came to me without a horror story from a previous agency

It's wild.

But I'm CERTAIN i'm in the minority, because:

I hear proof of it most weeks

Founders and marketing leaders venting about experiences they've had

- Marketing teams getting handed a finished design that looks nothing like what was discussed in the brief
- Founders going through 6 rounds of revisions with no clear reason why it keeps coming back wrong
- Literally anyone getting a website that looks great on the agency presentation and breaks on mobile on launch day

It's absolutely everywhere.

A Head of Marketing told me last month she spent 4 months on a redesign project. The agency missed every deadline. Nobody told her why. She found out the project had changed hands internally when a stranger introduced himself as "the new lead on your account."

It's mad stuff.

And I've always thought:

"Ah yeah, that's just how agencies work. Comes with the territory"

But I'm starting to wonder...

If this keeps happening to almost everyone, what is the industry actually doing wrong?

Here's what I think the real problems are:
1. Agencies sell outcomes but scope work, the two almost never match
2. They never tell you who's actually working on your project after the sales call
3. Timelines get set before anyone understands the actual problem
4. Feedback rounds are unlimited in conversation, limited in contract
5. The brief is treated as a formality, not a foundation
6. Cost changes happen in silence until the invoice arrives

Ultimately clients just want honesty and clarity

Maybe that's not a very profitable way to run an agency in the short term

But here are 3 questions you need to ask about before hiring anyone:

1. Who is actually doing the work?
2. How are scope, success, and timelines defined?
3. How will communication and feedback work?

Be someone who asks the uncomfortable questions before the contract is signed :)

"The website looks great, but the pipeline didn't move much"

I hear this from marketing leaders more than anything else

The brand is consistent. The UI is clean. The animations are smooth

But there's 1 problem:

They treated design as the outcome

It isn't

Design is the vehicle. Conversion is the destination

Here are 8 signs your website was built to impress, not convert ↓

1 Your hero talks about you, not your buyer.
Visitors don't arrive asking "what does this do?" They arrive asking "can this fix my problem?"

2. Your best sales argument isn't on your website.
Your AEs know exactly what closes deals. Your homepage says something completely different.

3. Three CTAs above the fold. Zero conversions.
When you give someone three options, they pick none. One clear next step always wins

4. Social proof that looks good but doesn't convert.
Logo bars and "Great tool!" testimonials are wallpaper. Buyers want to see someone exactly like them getting exactly the result they want

5. Messaging written for the company you were, not the company you are.
Your stage changed. Your product evolved. Your biggest differentiator today isn't even mentioned on your homepage

6. Optimized for job titles, not buying triggers.
Nobody buys because they're a Head of Marketing. They buy because something broke

7. Launched once. Never touched again.
Your website isn't a project with a launch date. It's the infrastructure that needs to evolve with your business

8. Traffic grew. Pipeline didn't.
More visitors in a broken funnel just burn more budget. Fix the website first, then scale

A beautiful website that doesn't convert is just expensive art

The companies winning right now aren't building prettier sites

They're building clearer ones
