Is your CEO/CMO asking about visibility in AI search?

You're not alone.

If you would have told me that you could 3x your AI visibility within 10 days for your main topic, I would have found that v. hard to believe.

Until I saw one of our customers did it.

So I went on a deep dive to understand how.

Findings:

• Went from 16% visibility to 53% for their main topic (a 3.3x increase).
• Went from 5th to 2nd as the most mentioned brand on that topic, while outcompeting some big names in their space.
• Increased their Share of Voice 3-fold (% of AI mentions of a brand belonging to them).
• Had their domain became the top citation source (from 9th position).
• Saw different visibility impact per engine: ChatGPT went from 9% to 21%, while Google’s AI Overviews went from 27% to 72% (similar to AI Mode & Perplexity).

All in 10 days. So how did they do it?

There are some caveats (more on this below), but the main change was a listicle they published.

One that featured:
• A list of tools with decision making frameworks (not generic advice).
• A comparison table with descriptive text (not checkmarks).
• 7 FAQs (of course) covering questions on the topic.
• A well defined JSON schema that included entities like Organization, ItemList, and FAQPage, making it accessible for AI engines to read.

The caveats are that the main topic was in Spanish (not as competitive as English), and that their competitors didn't have any content answering questions on that topic.

Lessons:

• Emerging brand can get an edge over established brands, especially in a niche where competitors haven't woken up to AI search.
• Your domain can have more influence than you think. A domain with a rating of 38 (according to Ahrefs) became most cited vs. domains with a ratings of 80+.
• Listicles are getting a bit of a bad rap, but the format works when executed well.
• Biggest one for me: results in 10 days in AI search vs 3-6 months in SEO. 🙂

We published a new listicle on Friday.

By Tuesday it was already cited 76 times in AI engines.

This pushed our AI visibility for some BOFU prompts from 0 to 57%, and increased our Share of Voice from 0% to more than 6%.

Some context:
· Listicle is comprehensive and well optimized for SEO.
· Was written 100% by humans.
· Different results per market (e.g. more impact in US than UK).
· Article got cited most by Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and AI mode. Least by ChatGPT.

Funny is how this was primarily an SEO effort that also impacted AI visibility. 

Seems like AEO is SEO, even though SEO died a long time ago.
