“I don’t have 48 years of patience left. Neither should you.” That is not frustration speaking. That is a data-driven conclusion from someone who has spent nearly two decades inside the rooms where these decisions get made and unmade…and value being left on the table.

Current projections place senior leadership parity in supply chain 48 years away. To be precise about what that means: we are not talking about a slow climb toward progress. We are talking about a timeline that extends well beyond the careers of every woman currently fighting for a seat at the table, every girl currently in a classroom who will one day enter this workforce, and every leader who has ever attached their name to a diversity commitment without attaching accountability to it.

Women represent 40% of the supply chain workforce. Female Chief Supply Chain Officers dropped to just 11%, the lowest figure recorded since 2019. For women of color, the picture is compounding. For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 74 women of color make that same step. Black women earn 66 cents and Latinas earn 58 cents for every dollar paid to white men. When we talk about the 48-year timeline, we need to be honest that for women of color, that timeline is even longer and the structural barriers are not glass ceilings alone. They are systemic, layered, and deeply entrenched.

Here is what makes this regression not just inequitable but strategically indefensible: the research is unambiguous about what women leaders deliver. McKinsey has consistently found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are significantly more likely to outperform their peers on profitability. Catalyst research demonstrates that organizations with more women in senior leadership show stronger financial performance, higher innovation outcomes, and greater organizational resilience. 

In supply chain specifically, the complexity of today’s operating environment, navigating geopolitical fragmentation, supply chains at war, climate disruption, regulatory pressure, and AI transformation simultaneously, demands exactly the kind of integrative, systems-level leadership that research has repeatedly associated with diverse leadership teams.

Women are not asking for a seat at the table as an act of charity. Women belong at the head of it because the world is demanding the results that diverse, human-centric leadership produces, and the data has been making this case for decades. The wait for a new chain of command cannot take 48 years.

Women's History Month is observed every March in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. It was officially designated by the US Congress in 1987, but its roots go back to 1911 when women across Europe took to the streets demanding the right to vote and to work with dignity.

More than a century later, we are still having versions of that same conversation and in industries like supply chain, sustainability, and innovation, the stakes have never been higher.

Women's History Month is not a retrospective. It is a reminder that the systems we build reflect the values we hold near and dear. When we exclude women from leadership, from design, from decision-making, we build systems that serve a fraction of the people they are supposed to serve.

This March, we are not just celebrating how far women have come. We are asking what it will take to build the world that women and all of us actually deserve.

Loving the outcome is easy. Loving the process is where you find out who you really are.

We live in a world obsessed with the highlight reel: the promotion, the award, the finished product. But the people I admire most are not the ones who simply arrived somewhere impressive. They are the ones who genuinely fell in love with the becoming. The late nights that stretched them. The setbacks that redirected them. The slow, quiet progress that no one witnessed but them.

That is where the real gems are collected, one step at a time. I’ve learned that the climb itself, enjoying the ride, the view, the unexpected twists and turns, is not a detour from the destination. It is the destination.

Because here is what nobody tells you at the beginning: when you finally reach the top, it is the journey you will remember. The people who showed up in the hard seasons. The version of yourself you had to become to get there. The moments that felt like obstacles that turned out to be the making of you.

Stop rushing past your steps to get to your summit, to get to the top of whatever it is your climbing. The steps are the point.

Fall in love with the process, and watch how differently everything feels.

The Supreme Court just upended U.S. tariff policy, and supply chain leaders need to pay attention.

I’m not a trade lawyer or a tariff policy expert. But I’ve spent my career inside global supply chains, advising Fortune 500 companies and governments on how to build resilient, future-ready networks. When the Supreme Court handed down its 6-3 ruling Friday striking down IEEPA-based tariffs, my first thought was about the thousands of supply chain leaders making multimillion-dollar sourcing decisions under extraordinary uncertainty for nearly two years.

The pivot happened fast. A new 10% global tariff under Section 122 took effect this morning, with the president signaling he’ll raise it to 15%, the statutory maximum. U.S. Customs confirmed yesterday it will stop collecting IEEPA duties. The EU has postponed ratification of its trade deal with the US, stating the new tariff likely violates the agreement. Japan has pushed back too. The global response is shifting by the hour.

What supply chain professionals should watch:
The relief is real but incomplete. IEEPA tariffs generated roughly $160B in revenue. Over 90% was passed to consumers. The refund process, potentially $130-175B, could take years. Companies that haven’t taken proactive steps to preserve their claims may face a far more difficult path to recovery.

The 150-day clock is ticking. Section 122 tariffs expire July 24 unless Congress extends them, which appears unlikely. Exemptions cover critical minerals, energy, pharmaceuticals, certain agriculture, passenger vehicles, aerospace, and electronics. Whether your goods fall inside or outside those exemptions determines your cost exposure through midsummer.

Section 232 tariffs remain in full force. Steel, aluminum, autos, auto parts, copper levies were unaffected. New Section 301 investigations have been ordered. The tools are changing, but the intent has not.

Nearshoring and friend-shoring calculus hasn’t fundamentally shifted. Some analysts suggest this removes “policy risk” from global sourcing. Executive discretion hasn’t disappeared; it’s been channeled into narrower pathways. That’s not a green light to reverse supply chain resilience investments.

Bottom line: Scenario planning is not optional. Build optionality into sourcing strategies. Stress-test networks against multiple tariff scenarios. Invest in trade compliance capabilities that will determine which companies recover billions and which lose them.

Women's History Month is not simply a celebration of the past. It is a declaration about the future we are building together. March invites us to do more than look back at how far women have come. It calls us to examine where we are going, and to be honest about why women are not optional in that journey.

Supply chains are the nervous system of the global economy. They touch every product, every resource, and every community on this planet. For too long, they have been designed by systems that excluded the very voices most attuned to care, consequence, and long-term thinking. Women were not simply left out of leadership in this industry. They were left out of the architecture of how these systems were built in the first place, and the world is paying the price for it.

The capacity to hold complexity, to center relationships, and to think in generations rather than fiscal years is not a soft skill; it is a hard skill and center of competent leadership. It is precisely the intelligence required to build supply chains that are regenerative, responsible, and resilient in a world that can no longer afford extraction as a strategy. Women are not a diversity initiative. They are a design and leadership imperative.

The final Big Idea in our Supply Chain Revolution® series is here. Big Idea 10 closes the series with a guest who changed his entire company's mission after visiting the Parthenon. Constantine Komodromos, Time 100 honoree and founder of VesselBot-Enabling Sustainable Supply Chains, watched the pollution scarring ancient stone in Athens and went back to his office with one question: can the technology we've built actually help? 

The answer became a platform that gives shippers real-time, granular emissions data on every carrier, every trade lane, every voyage — turning decarbonization from a compliance exercise into an operational advantage. 

In our conversation, Constantine shared a case that floored me: 

An automotive company in Europe had 160,000 tons of CO2 emissions in over-the-road transportation and no budget line for the cost exposure those emissions would create under EU ETS 2. Potentially tens of millions of euros they hadn't planned for. 

With precision data, they identified a path to 10%+ emissions reduction. No offsets. No alternative fuel purchases. Pure operational optimization. Savings of €300K to €1M+. 

This is what data-driven decarbonization looks like. 

Ideas 1 through 6 of this series asked us to envision the future. Ideas 7 through 10 showed us how to build it. 

This one brings it home.
