We see so many of the same photos when it comes to historical figures. In doing some research for a podcast a few years ago, I came across this striking photo of the King family.

This photo was taken in May 1956 in Montgomery, Alabama, which would've been in the middle of the critically-important Montgomery Bus Boycott. At the time, Martin Luther King Jr was in his mid-twenties & less than 2 years into his job at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. 

On December 5th, 1955, King was taken by surprise when he was elected President of the Montgomery Improvement Association. At the time, he wasn't well known. But no one else was eager to take on the role, based on retribution that could be expected from the local community. King would step forward & embrace this massive responsibility, even as unappealing & unnerving as it might be.

That evening in early December 1955, King was expected to give a speech. It's been said that he typically took about 15 hours to build a sermon. But this time, King ended up having about 20 minutes to assemble the message to thousands of those in attendance. He delivered a powerful calling that wasn't videotaped (sadly), but was recorded via written ledger for posterity. The "call and response" crescendoed into this rallying call:

Martin Luther King Jr would never look back from that seminal moment. The Civil Rights movement had found its voice. A dynamic, intelligent, charismatic & courageous voice for the ages.

This image captured below is one I can relate to as a husband and a father. Martin Luther King Jr would go on to sacrifice it all, so that our Nation could move forward as a society that could possibly, one day, realize the vision that he shared with us in the iconic speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in August 1963.

"Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!" - that's what Mahalia Jackson shouted to Dr. King mere moments before he shared what would go down in history as the "I Have a Dream" address. It was a theme that Dr. King had been working on for a long time, but wasn't quite ready to share it broadly, especially in front of some 250,000 people on August 28th, 1963.

Mahalia Jackson knew all Americans needed to hear that vision of Dr. King's. And thankfully, she wasn't going to let the moment pass.

There is no finish line in forming a more perfect Union. While we've made a ton of hard-fought progress, we still have some heavy lifting to do.

Let's celebrate MLK Day on Monday, in a way that may well last & serve all year long. May we all strive to keep the dream alive, here at home & abroad.

Big news this morning, as Artemis II has begun its slow trek out from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 

The entire Artemis campaign, powered by the extraordinary Space Launch System, presents an exciting new chapter in the New Space Race. For perspective, I think it's interesting to see how the SLS sizes up next to the legendary Saturn V - - and Starship too. 

As impulso.space reports:

"The SLS is a Space Shuttle-derived launch vehicle — meaning it has been built with already developed components of the Space Shuttle program — and it is designed with the collaboration of a lot of companies:

☑️ Boeing designed the Core stage with its 64.4 meters height.
☑️ The four core engines are contracted by Aerojet Rocketdyne: the fuel and oxidizer for these are LH2 and LOX, respectively.
☑️ Northrop Grumman built the two solid boosters, with five propellant segments of Polybutadiene acrylonitrile (PBAN).
☑️ The Upper Stage, called ICPS, Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, was designed by United Launch Alliance (ULA)."


Artemis II is set to launch as early as February, and it's successful mission will mark the first time humans have traveled to and orbited the Moon since the Apollo era ended in 1972. The current plans have Artemis III returning humans to the lunar surface; followed by Artemis IV, where we'll establish a lunar base.

On that exciting note: space supply chain management is poised for dramatic growth and transformation as humanity pushes beyond Earth toward sustained lunar and, eventually, Martian presence. I'm an optimist! Although, the latter probably won't happen in my lifetime...but who knows, with the ever-increasing velocity of innovation. 

With the potential establishment of a lunar base, traditional terrestrial logistics paradigms will be reimagined to support ultra-long-distance transport and delivery across vast spatial gaps. Emerging technologies (autonomous spacecraft, orbital refueling depots, reusable landers, and AI-driven orchestration platforms, etc) will be critical in minimizing risk, cost, and lead time, while leveraging lunar resources to produce fuel, water, and construction materials. Talk about inventory strategy challenges (and last mile 😀 )

It will be interesting to see where the convergence of commercial innovation, government investment, and global partnerships take us all...and how it will accelerate a new frontier of supply chain management; at least in this part of the Milky Way.

“It’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” - - Mark Twain (one of my favs)

A few months back, I was getting my daily steps in at the local park, on a beautiful early fall day in Georgia. As an aviation enthusiast, my eyes are usually heaven bound. This particular contrail is more unique than those I'm used to. To my non-trained-aviator eyes, it seems that the pilot decided to change destinations mid-flight. Perhaps rather than heading to the mountains, they had a hankering for the beach. Who knows.

But there's certainly an important lesson to be learned there, at least to my mind.

Leadership is often mistaken for certainty. The decisive voice. The firm stance. The unwavering conviction. But history - - and hard-earned experience - - suggests that the most effective leaders aren’t ONLY defined by how often they’re right. They’re equally as defined by how quickly they’re willing to reconsider and adapt when reality shifts. And reality seems to shift harder, more often & at a greater velocity these days, huh?

The danger Twain points to isn’t ignorance. It’s overconfidence. It’s the consequential moment when a leader stops questioning assumptions because “this is how we’ve always done it,” or because past success convinces them today’s conditions haven’t changed. In fast-moving environments, whether business, technology, or supply chain: that mindset isn’t just limiting. It's incredibly risky...and can come at great costs.

To me, the ability to change your mind often requires a little bit of humility (or maybe a lot). It means listening deeply, especially to inconvenient data or dissenting, informed perspectives. It means separating ego from outcomes. And it means recognizing that adaptability is not weakness or indecision; but rather "intelligence in motion".

I've seen strong leaders create cultures where changing course isn’t seen as failure, but as critical learning, followed by doing. These cultures reward curiosity. They ask better questions. And when new information surfaces, they adjust: clearly, decisively, and transparently. All of which can present quite a tailwind to organizational performance.

In a world defined by volatility and constant disruption, you might just say that rigidity is far more dangerous than revision. The leaders who thrive aren’t those who cling hardest to last year's (or even yesterday's) answers; but those bold & brave enough to say: “I’ve learned something new, and I’m moving forward differently.”

I believe that exceptional leaders distinguish themselves by discerning when conviction serves the moment; and then in those times when the situation calls for them to change their mind.
