In veel bedrijven heeft marketing een merkwaardig lot getroffen. Het is de afdeling die de beurswand ontwerpt, de brochures bijwerkt en de PowerPoint van de salesafdeling oppoetst.

Nuttig? Zeker.

Strategisch? Geen seconde.

En precies dáár ontstaat een gevaar dat veel sterker is dan afhankelijkheid van één klant of één sector: het risico dat een bedrijf zonder richting draait terwijl iedereen denkt dat het “gewoon lekker loopt”.

Het is de stille vijand die ik bij veel bedrijven zie: strategische dofheid. Niet omdat het management niet scherp is. Niet omdat de techniek ontbreekt. Maar omdat niemand structureel bezig is met de vragen die het verschil maken tussen groeien en achterblijven:

- Welke kansen blijven onbenut?
- Wat missen we omdat niemand systematisch kijkt naar marktverschuivingen, concurrentstrategieën en ongebruikte positioneringsruimte?
- Welke unieke waarde hebben we buiten ‘kwaliteit en levertijd’?

Bedrijven zijn meester in produceren, optimaliseren en leveren. Maar wie in de operatie leeft, ziet de horizon vaak niet meer. De producten worden beter, maar het kompas wordt doffer. 

Tot het moment dat de markt beweegt en er ineens geen duidelijke richting is.

Dan is het te laat om pas dán te gaan nadenken over positionering, marktkeuze en concurrentievoordeel.

De slimme bedrijven herkennen dit patroon eerder.

Zij zien marketing niet als een kostenpost of cosmetisch project, maar als het stuur dat bepaalt:
- Welke markten naar hen toe bewegen,
- Waar concurrenten kansen laten liggen,
- Welke klanten wél bij hun toekomst passen (en welke niet),
- Welke nieuwe proposities strategisch logisch zijn in plaats van opportunistisch.

Kortom: ze gebruiken marketing waarvoor het bedoeld is. Als strategische discipline. Niet als kleurplatenafdeling.

Soms betekent dat een radicaal nieuwe propositie. Soms betekent dat het verfijnen wat al werkt.

Het betekent in ieder geval altijd één stap voorlopen op de concurrentie en keuzes durven te maken. Dat is namelijk de enige weg naar een toekomst met een duurzaam concurrentievoordeel.
