But when “resilience” isn’t improved, we haven’t secured anything.

I've heard this throughout my life, still do, and there's probably some truth to it.

But in the small business world, at least, I've had a very different experience.

Over the last month I've engaged directly with ~15-20 business leaders, founders, and CEOs in organizations big and small. 

None of them owed me anything, but they gave everything. 

They shared their knowledge, experience, guidance, expertise and genuinely tried to help however they could. 

Of course we tried to find mutually beneficial interests to pursue, but even when none were immediately available, their passion for helping someone that they just met didn't disappear.

They took all the (precious) time they needed to try to assist me with my goals however they could, and I reciprocated.

Makes me proud, thankful, encouraged, and puts a big smile on my face and in my heart.

Trusting your critical edge devices by default costs you money, customers, regulatory penalties, and more.

And it definitely ain't practicing "Zero-Trust"...

Instead, use Two-System Integrity (TSI) to independently verify that these key devices are behaving as expected, in real time, by looking directly at the data their handling.

Hackers can cost you millions $$$ without ever touching your network.

They might not even know you exist.

The Cloudflare outage overnight demonstrated this perfectly, impacting massive companies across various industries, such as:

- DoorDash
- Dayforce
- Claude AI
- NJ Transit

Whether it was nefarious activity or a random data spike doesn't actually matter. The impacts (lost operational $, degraded public trust, etc.) are the same and the damage that occurred illustrates the vulnerability to us and those who would seek to take advantage of it.

Cyber attacks present very differently than cyber breaches.
And threat actors interested in maximizing damage don't target X. Or Uber. Or UPS.
They hit cloud service providers. Supply chains. Infrastructure.

This isn't a "oh isn't that interesting?" post... 
It's a wakeup call that introduced risk needs to be recognized and mitigated.

And the increased interdependency of our systems, supply chains, and infrastructure is a BIG RISK!

People who don't change their home Wi-Fi router's default admin password be like...

Your tech can be hacked before it's ever installed.

Supply chain risks are real.

Its always a pleasure to have your company family gather together to celebrate the arrival of the holiday season and this year as I get ready for a transition of sorts its even more impactful to have my team mates celebrate both my impending retirement and transition to Emeritus status... Here’s the problem in one sentence:

Monoculture killed Irish potatoes in the 1840s.

Monoculture in cybersecurity will kill government resilience in the 2020s.

Yes, big discounts save money.
Yes, standardization improves efficiency.

But when “resilience” isn’t even in the conversation, we haven’t fortified anything.

We’ve just created the juiciest target imaginable.

Cost and efficiency matter.

Not getting completely wrecked by the next SolarWinds-scale attack matters more.

We can do both, but this deal misses the cybersecurity piece entirely.

Thankfully it's optional and not a mandate... let's hope some orgs choose other options.
