Joining a predominantly group and incentive travel house, I helped develop a motivation side to the business and brought in and developed several key accounts including A-Plant, Compaq Computers, Gainsborough Showers, GE Capital, Max Factor, Orange, Procter and Gamble. 

For example, Compaq computers who identified they had no relationship with the smaller retailers distributing their product. Initially, they assumed this was because the partners didn't want a relationship, and any effort in this direction wouldn't be profitable. We conducted extensive research for Compaq, contacting the retailers for their honest feedback. We discovered there definitely was an opportunity for a relationship and launched six one-day incentive programs that resulted in a 67% growth in sales and 4000% return on investment.

I also worked extensively with the channel partners of Orange Plc to incentivise retail staff sales. At this time, Orange mobile phones mainly sold through channel partners, such as The Carphone Warehouse. Outlets like these experienced 92% staff turnover per year, although employees didn’t necessarily change jobs. They simply moved between companies. The impact of this was that staff were asked to retrain at each branch no matter their experience or how many times they had received the training. 

To help solve this, I created distance learning training modules that worked with the salesperson directly and allowed them to take their qualifications to each new employer and build upon them. The initiative was a huge success and revolutionised the industry. 

Over my five years with TMB, I worked on a full range of assignments for which these are just two examples.  During this time, I also began my own company Orangutan, which I have run ever since.

People often tell me reward schemes don't work for their audience; however, in my experience, this is rarely the case.

The failure of any programme usually comes down to how well the programme is launched, structured and if the rewards are compelling for the audience.
