It wasn’t a breach.
It wasn’t an incident.
It wasn’t a tool rollout or a long-awaited reorg.

The biggest unlock came from one cybersecurity leader who decided to show up differently.

Here’s what changed:

For 30 days, he practiced one simple habit:
→ Slow down before stepping in.

And as he did, he started noticing things he normally missed:

• Was I reacting, or actually leading?
• Did I explain the “why,” not just the “what”?
• Did I adjust to how others think, not just how I think?
• Did I move the work forward or just move it faster?

People came to him for answers, not alignment.

I’ve seen this pattern across the technical leaders I coach:
When their impact plateaus, it’s rarely a capability issue.
It’s an altitude issue.

So we focused on one habit over 30 days:
→ Set the altitude. Then lead from there.

That meant:
•Zooming out before weighing in
•Leading cross-functional conversations early, not reacting late
•Getting clear on the business priority before deciding on the team activity

He didn’t need more tools. He needed a shift in how he showed up.

And here’s what changed:
✅ Buy-in came faster
✅ Resistance dropped
✅ His own words: “Collaboration across peers got easier and faster.”

You could feel it, even if no one dared to say it.

One leader’s communication style had quietly reshaped how the whole security org operated.

He never said “my way or the highway." He didn’t have to.

🟢 They tracked their progress weekly, in real conversations, not hypotheticals

Every time I experience burnout, I say it's the last time.

In 2018, as CEO of a software team. Pushing it across the finish line for an acquisition.

In 2022, trying to hold together the venture studio as partners were going different directions.

And many smaller moments in between.
I've written about this before.

You can't go through these cycles without noticing the common denominator: 

YOU.

As they say in recovery: "Wherever you go, there you are."

Recently I've been feeling the burn.
Working long hours and weekends to "get caught up" (as if that's possible).
My wife recently said, "We have to find a way to break the cycle."

And that's when it hit me.
This all started long before.

My dad worked hard to provide.
Leaving every day at 5am.
Back barely in time for dinner.
I learned what "hard work" looked like from watching him.
And I'm so grateful to him for that.

What I didn't learn was how to slow down. Or stop.
There's no way to tell a kid that he's learning more than JUST a work ethics.
He was learning a pattern.
Day after day.

And that pattern is uncomfortable to recognize.
And more uncomfortable to break.

Because breaking it means questioning everything you thought made you valuable.

Your work ethic. 
Your intense dedication. 
Your ability to push through.

The very things people praised you for.
And when you question these, you push against your lineage.
To change means to leave something that is core you.

But this time it's hitting me different.
Because it's not just about changing my behavior.
It's about redirecting my family's trajectory.

My kids are watching me the same way I watched my dad.
They're learning what "normal" looks like.

And I get to choose what that is.

I'm learning to recognize the pattern.
And intentionally breaking it.

It won't feel good for a while.

My brain will tell me I'm being lazy.
That I'm not doing enough.
That I'm letting people down.
That I need to work harder to hit my goals.

But that's the old story talking.
Not the new one.

This takes time.
It's challenging.

But the discomfort is part of the process.
And it's temporary.

The struggle of changing is not a part of the place you're going.
It's proof that you're on your way.

How you live your days is how you live your life.
