I'm a husband as well as father of five. I'm also a Cofounder of Column Five, my favorite creative agency (I may be a bit biased). 

Column Five is a B2B marketing agency that specializes in brand and content marketing for SaaS companies. We help our clients build their brands through world-class content that stands out and pulls people in because it's anchored to a company's special sauce and conveys a clear, distinctive, and memorable perspective.

The content we create and distribute shapes the story potential buyers tell themselves and others about your company, namely that their lives will improve simply by becoming your customers.

The last two years have been the hardest of my life.

And I never thought I'd write this on LinkedIn.

We lost a child at birth. I had a sizable investment go sideways. And we moved our family across the country.

Not all at once. Just one thing after another. Which in some ways is its own kind of hard.

I won't pretend I handled all of it gracefully. I didn't. I'm still working on handling most of it, to be honest. And some days are easier than others. 

But if there's one thing I kept coming back to, and one thing I'd tell anyone going through a hard stretch it’s this:

Hard seasons teach you things that good times never will. About yourself. About what actually matters. About who's really in your corner.

The grief, the stress, the uncertainty — none of it is wasted if you're paying attention.

Two years later I'm still standing. My family is still standing. And I'm a better husband, father, and person because of what those two years forced me to learn. And, most importantly, I'm closer to God than ever. 

I wouldn't trade that. Even for an easier road….

I still am not sure why I’m sharing this on LI, something just prompted me to - maybe it was God. (And hopefully my doing so encourages someone). 

But what I do know is, if you’re still reading this and you're in the middle of your hardest stretch right now, keep going. Stay present. Do whatever you have to do to keep your head above water. And don't ever, ever, ever give up.

It seems like everyone I know is stressed right now.

And for good reasons... 

LinkedIn is full of layoff posts. X has people writing essays about how AI is going to eliminate every job by next Tuesday. The stock market looks terrible. Housing unaffordable. The news is a disaster.

And I get it. It feels heavy.

But we need to keep things in perspective.

If you woke up today, you're already ahead. If you have consistent water, food, and a place to sleep — you are statistically among the luckiest people who have ever lived on this planet. If you have people in your life who love you, it's not even close.

The noise is loud right now. Louder than I can remember. But the noise has always been loud. It was loud during Covid. It was loud before that. It will be loud after this.

Here's what I keep coming back to: the future has never been built by the people who were most convinced it was over.

It's been built by the ones who stayed optimistic anyway.

That's still true. Even now. Especially now.

Don't let the algorithm convince you otherwise.

I started this week talking about how heavy everything feels right now.

I ended up sharing some of the hardest things my family has been through.

And my hope is that some of what I have shared has helped encourage at least one person. 

The response reminded me of something I already knew but needed to remember:

People are so much more than what they post on LinkedIn.

Everyone you scroll past is carrying something. A hard marriage. A struggling business. A loss they haven't talked about publicly. A fear they haven't named yet.

Be generous with people. More generous than you think is necessary.

Here's where I've landed after this week:

Optimism isn't pretending things are fine (I often used to think this). It's deciding that the people in your life are worth it. That tomorrow can and will most likely be better. That the work you're doing matters even when it's not working yet.

That's the only kind of optimism that holds up under real pressure.

The naive, or fake kind breaks.

The *earned* kind doesn't.

Hard seasons end. Not on a schedule. Not when you're ready. But they end.

Or as a mentor and mine says often, "facts change, but the truth never changes..." 

And when those hard seasons end, and the facts change in your favor, you get to decide what you build with what you learned.
