i vulnerably came out today.

it turns out i've loved to win since i was a child, pulling my hand away from my Mother running out into the street to get "where i have no idea."

i just had to win.

and some influencer peers and leaders in my community told me winning was the way to be Loved.

and i believed it. and it's a lie.

the real win, shared by the quieter long term builders, is in how i move towards Desire, in community with Others.

i'm finally starting to let the lies go.

the truth is, every single being i know is the valedictorian of their own experience. my job is to see that in them, and hold the space for them to use Prospection to discover who they want to be.

then we can all build a Future juntos.

we live in the question, "what will we Transmute all we have experienced into as we evolve?"

and it's as beautiful as the snow outside tonight. Nature is fierce in her Transformations.

Lindsey is brave.

i was honored to sit in on her TEDx Princeton recording.

her practice threw her into situations that stretched her beyond capacity.

only some knew that before she stepped on stage she inspired, comforted and calmed prior speakers.

held her daughter, reassured her she was loved.

was present with her parents and wife.

she’s balancing the tightrope of building a business and staying in integrity.

she aims her camera at the sustainability that makes the difference between going concern and going down.

her body knows this, and Lindsey learned to listen.

her practice now listens to others, their quiet moments behind the “scene.” the images that tell their fuller story.

i was lucky to have Lindsey listen and capture me. in her mirror, i saw myself deeper and in meaningful ways. what she fed back to me gave me an energy shake. momentum to step more boldly into my Purpose.

i’m fortunate to have had a good undergrad experience.

that’s not true for many folks i know.

our school had these interesting traditions, including no triskaidekaphobia. in fact, we celebrate every Friday the 13th.

beyond the quirky, one tradition set me up for success. we were the “hello” school.

it was our duty to say “hello” to everyone we passed on campus.

it built emotional tensile strength, because, indeed it was intimidating to say hi to people you were convinced would probably ignore you, or you’d rather not engage for fear or otherwise.

noticing a societal trend especially post-COVID – a fear of engaging strangers – i’ve recently pushed myself to every now and then to say “hello” or just nod to passersby. to take a moment to chat up the waiter and cashier [briefly – this is Brooklyn.]

build that sense we are all one, here on this tiny globe. 

an early boss said as i interviewed candidates – all i care is that each employee we bring onboard is “a good decent human being.” that starts inside. with the people in our neighborhood. the people we see each day.

i was not supposed to be the Valedictorian cuz i was gay in Jamaica

then, Black in America, i was not supposed to be a Valedictorian, only 2 years into my Brooklyn stint in High School in the 1980s

Black, gay, and lower class, i was not supposed to be a Phi Beta Kappa Math Major graduate at Colgate University in the 1990s

as an introvert, who was i to dance in silver tights and do a one-man show about my life at Princeton University?

i was not supposed to survive being HIV+ with 32 T-cells before the protease inhibitors

or survive being hit from behind by a car on a bicycle, flying over the handlebars landing on my butt

i was not supposed to learn how to [properly] swim, then do an Olympic triathlon in my 40s 

or run a half marathon on New Year's Eve after a pandemic, after full replacement right hip surgery in my 50s

or start my own company thereafter, generating a year two 72% year over year [yoy] revenue increase, a year three 50% yoy increase and then to track to six figures in year four

but i did.

so. 

now, i help other brave souls figure out who they are from inside out. i’ve now coached over 165 people strong. in the last three years i’ve watched them do what seems impossible. they thrive no matter what the World is up to, and they have a helluva lot of fun doing it

i was dreading yesterday, wet rainy and too much scheduled.

on reflection this morning, the middle passage opened me up.

it was a loaded rush that started first, talking with K-2 educators, and those who attend to the under 19 in their preparation for adulthood.

late afternoon, i was with 20-somethings burgeoning into the beginning of their careers.

i dashed to a band playing oldies, bopping in the East Village.

then ensconced in the warmth of wood and fireplace, with the 50-75 year old crowd, quietly sharing battle wounds from Corporations and wondering if this is the end of Work.

or the beginning of something Entrepreneurial.

i kept returning to what someone 30 years younger, hours before, tugged my heart with –

“Regenerative Agriculture.”

it’s something someone with decades of work ahead, considering her brothers and sisters coming up, considering her children to come would ponder.

she’s not fighting the weather, she’s putting on her rain boots.

she’s choosing to lean into all the Beauty in the World.

it’s a conversation i have with all my Clients – to re-member when they believed.

i teared up. my heart softened. i heard the wails and gnashing of teeth at the end of the World with new ears. hush. there’s Hope.

cut through the noise.
