'Context graphs are going to waste all of 2026.'

Former Gartner VP Sanjeev Mohan brings the heat in this one.

I sat down with Sanjeev at Data Day Texas and asked him about the biggest trends heading into 2026. His answer surprised me.

He's a huge believer in context. Extracting semantic meaning from data, connecting structured and unstructured sources, understanding the "why" behind transactions. He's even coined a new term, ECL (Entity Context Linking),  as an augmentation to ETL.

But context GRAPHS specifically? He thinks we're about to repeat the data mesh cycle. No standards. No common definition. Everyone with a point of view, nobody with an implementation guide.

His comparison to knowledge graphs hit hard. Tim Berners-Lee published the original ontology paper in 2001. That paper even talked about agents doing automation 25 years ago. We still haven't made knowledge graphs the de facto approach to reducing hallucinations. So how are we going to leapfrog to context graphs, which are even broader in scope?

His advice: take baby steps. Don't skip to the shiny new thing when we haven't mastered the foundations.

The other thing that stuck with me; he said 2026 is when we finally realize AI is NOT taking our jobs. It's the worst time to find a job, but the best time to create something brand new.

I know knowledge graphs and ontologies are all the rage right now. My question is - how far can you get with a bunch of markdown files in git, vs building graph databases, etc.

Millenials outsourced maintenance of our social graph to Facebook, but Facebook pivoted to algorithmic slop over social engagement. It's a disaster.

Case in point. Milford High class of 2001 is hosting a 25 year reunion. When we did the 20 year reunion, Facebook did a great job pushing updates into our classmates' feeds. 

Five years later Facebook has deprioritized connections as a content source in favor of TikTok style infinite scroll AI rage bait. Engagement with the reunion event is like 1/10th of what it was.

What's the solution? It's radical, I know, but we're going to start directly contacting classmates and maintaining lists that don't require alignment with Silicon Valley trends to engage people we know in real life.

Someone might even pick up a phone and make some calls.
