1️⃣ Understand the marketing & sales funnel

A marketer’s job is to make life easier for sales reps.
I didn’t get this initially.
I never cared about ROI.
Writing words all day felt enough.

But during monthly meetings, reality hit.

Founders only care about:

- How many SQLs we generated

- How many leads converted

- How much ROI we delivered this quarter

That’s when I understood
Content isn’t about words. It’s about outcomes.

2️⃣ Collaboration makes everything easier

Before writing any content, I started collaborating with sales and product teams to understand

- What exactly are we selling (products/services)

- The objections sales handles daily

- The products customers ask for the most

- Competitors mentioned on sales calls

- Demos where prospects show interest… and then disappear

That’s where things clicked.
You can’t write generic content anymore.
That’s what ChatGPT does.

Real differentiation comes from cross-team inputs.

3️⃣ Write everything from the user’s perspective

Recently, I started writing for a B2C brand.

And for the first time, I asked myself

What will the user feel after reading this?
The PDPs were for a women-centric storefront.
Since these were commercial pages, we reframed everything:

- How can our company help in sexual harassment cases?

- Why should someone choose us?

- FAQs tailored to real concerns, like:
 “If I’m sexually assaulted, what evidence do I need?”
(Reddit was surprisingly helpful here.)

That shift from brand-first to user-first changed everything.

Editing is the reason some blogs convert and others don’t.
 
Recently, a client asked me,
“Do you edit the pieces yourself?”
I said yes.

He really liked how the draft turned out—
the added flavor, the clarity, and how convincing it felt overall.
Then he asked me to share my editing checklist.

And honestly, I don’t follow a fixed checklist.
Because editing depends on a few things:

- the target audience

- the platform where the content will be published

- the search intent behind the topic

For example, if I’m writing a blog on
 “How much does it cost to develop an GenAI software in 2026”

I won’t first explain all the cost-driving factors
and reveal the actual cost at the very end.
That’s a mistake.

Instead, I answer the cost upfront in the intro.

That’s my first rule of editing
give readers what they came for, immediately.

After that, everything comes down to structural editing:

- refining sentence-level clarity

- removing fluff and redundancy

- checking if the headings create a logical flow

- making sure each heading actually matches the content under it

Editing, for me, isn’t about polishing words.

It’s about making the content clear, honest, and intent-driven.

P.S - How do you edit your content? Would love to learn your process.

Spending 3 years of self-editing turned me into a full time editor.

You might say,
“Gurpreet, you’re not an editor.”
Fair.

But most organizations don’t have one.
In many teams, writers are expected to analyze their own work and revise it.

Sometimes stakeholder feedback is added. Sometimes not.

For me, editing takes more time than writing.

When I write, I often free-flow.

I add extra lines, repeat ideas, and move fast to meet deadlines and ship work.

But when I put on the editor’s hat, everything slows down.

I start questioning things like:

- Does this match the search intent?

- Can this sentence be simpler?

- Is the readability good enough?

- Will the target audience actually understand this?

I even try to validate it with feedback from the real TG.

And no, editing isn’t just about:

- fixing spelling errors

- adding commas

- blindly following style or tone guidelines

For me, editing is about:

- aligning content with user needs

- making information concise and direct

- structuring it in a way that both users and LLMs can easily parse

P.S.- Editing is highly subjective. 

P.P.S - How much time do you usually spend editing your content?

Most of our qualified leads came from case studies, not blogs.

And the reason is simple.

Today’s buyers want BOFU content
content that handles objections
and proves you’ve already done this before.

Case studies and success stories do exactly that.
They’re conversion-focused assets.

And they attract leads who are already serious.
So in 2026, if you’re not writing case studies or success stories,
you’re leaving real revenue on the table.
