I filled in for a Marketing Ops team member at an enterprise company for 6 months.

HubSpot on the front end. Salesforce on the back.

Here's what I learned about running MOPs at scale:

1. Enterprise companies - they're just like us!

The same problems that exist in smaller companies... persist at the enterprise level. Just at a much larger scale. Issues are tangled - you pull one wire, 3 others fall out. Extra care and caution are required.

2. Documentation saves lives

When you're covering for someone, you realize fast what's missing. I spent the first 2 weeks just mapping process and documentation. Enterprise systems have layers most people don't see.

3. The handoff is where deals die

HubSpot to Salesforce sync issues caused more problems than anything else. Lead routing delays, property <> field mapping errors, duplicate records. Sales blamed Marketing. Marketing blamed the system.

The real issue? No one owned the middle.

4. Event management gets messy quick

Managing registrations, attendance tracking, and follow-up across two systems is harder than it looks. Especially when registration was done in a 3rd system. One mess up and you've got 200 leads in limbo.

5. Tribal knowledge is a liability

So much lived in someone's head. Which campaigns trigger what. Why certain fields exist. How to troubleshoot sync errors.

If it's not documented, it doesn't exist.

Covering for someone else forces you to see the gaps.

And those gaps? They exist whether someone's out or not.

What's the biggest operational gap you've discovered in your systems?

HubSpot's default "unengaged" suppression cost my client $47K in lost deals.

Here's what happened:

🚨They were using HubSpot's graymail suppression (enabled by default). (Also, easy to toggle on for every email...and it stays on!)

It automatically excludes 2 groups of Contacts:
→ Contacts who've never opened an email and haven't opened the last 11
→ Contacts who've opened an email before, but haven't opened the last 16 emails

Sounds smart, right?

Except when I audited their Unengaged list, I found:

• 23 active customers (avg. $12K LTV)
• 49 contacts who registered for the latest event
• 31 contacts who visited /pricing page in the last 30 days
• 13 contacts who engaged via sales calls, not email

The problem with HubSpot's default criteria:

It only looks at email opens and clicks.

It ignores everything else:

• Seasonality in the business
• High-volume email sending to valid buyers who are just "tuned out" from Marketing emails
• Deliverability issues (emails landing in Promotions/Spam)
• Purchase history
• Event attendance
• Website activity
• Sales interactions

Is your business seasonal or cyclical? Maybe ignoring 11 emails in a row is normal when out of season. Doesn't mean that they're not legit buyers.

Is your Marketing email even landing in the Primary inbox? Maybe your contacts aren't even seeing it - so can't engage.

After 50+ HubSpot overhauls, I've seen this pattern repeatedly.

What to do instead:

1. Define what "Unengaged" means to your business.
2. Audit your "Unengaged" list for active customers and deals
3. Check website activity, and marketing and sales touchpoints
4. Build custom suppression using multiple signals
5. Use "Sends since last engagement" property with YOUR criteria
6. Factor in Apple MPP (it breaks open tracking)
7. Check email deliverability while you're at it (use GlockApps

Don't let HubSpot's defaults decide who's valuable.

Your CRM has better data than email clicks alone.

Dear Google,

We need to talk about your pricing.

I've been a loyal Google Workspace customer for years. Email, calendar, docs, drive. The basics run my business.

But you keep jacking up my renewal bill for AI features I never asked for.

I don't use Gemini to write my emails.

(It's me! Always me! With fingers! Typing!)

I don't need AI to summarize my docs.

(I have to undo and fix more than I keep...)

I don't want machine learning in my spreadsheets. (What is being sucked in for training datasets??)

And here's the kicker: I can't opt out.

You're forcing me to pay for features I'll never touch. Features that don't make my business run better.

Features I have to sometimes fight against (those AI-generated email replies are just awful)

Features that just pad your AI narrative for investors.

I'm not anti-AI. I use it where it makes sense.

(Breeze AI is a huge value-add for HubSpot form fill lead routing. But I digress.)

When you bundle it into my core tools and raise prices without giving me a choice? That's not innovation. That's a shakedown.

I just want reliable email and file storage. That's it.

Stop making me subsidize your AI ambitions.

Give us a basic tier without the AI bloat. Let us choose what we actually need. And the ability to turn AI OFF as a default - forever and ever.

Until then, you're just another vendor squeezing customers for features they don't want.
