Who rises fastest in PMM often has very little connection to who’s doing the best work.

Deliver on time (or early).
Nail the largest launches.
Talk about what you accomplished.

You haven’t mastered the art of strategic visibility.

Strategic visibility is what will earn you trust, influence, and ultimately, a seat at the table.

What most PMMs don’t realize is that visibility isn’t about volume, it’s about framing.

The PMMs who stay overlooked tend to communicate at the task level:

It’s accurate, but it’s not particularly meaningful.

→ PROBLEM LEVEL

The PMMs who start getting traction shift to the problem level:

“Here’s what we unblocked.”
“Here’s what improved because of this work.”

People start to see the connection between PMM and progress.

→ POSSIBILITY LEVEL

The PMMs who become indispensable operate at the possibility level:

“Here’s what this made possible for customers.”
“Here’s how this moved the business forward.”

Now they’re not seen as executors, they’re seen as strategic drivers.

Language shapes perception.

If your day starts with notifications, someone else already owns your focus.

For most of us, the day doesn’t begin with intention.
It begins with noise.

The ping of a message.
The red dot of a notification.
The small, silent pull to check what you might have missed while you were sleeping.

We call it “catching up,” but often, it’s the first moment we fall behind. Because from that instant, your attention starts to scatter. 

And the tone of your day is quietly set by someone else’s priorities.

Our brains weren’t built for this constant inflow.  

Neuroscientists call the problem cognitive residue: the mental clutter that builds up when you switch from one thing to another without pause. 

Every half-read email and unanswered text leaves a trace of unfinished thought behind. So it takes multiples more attention to resolve every small task, the more times you return to it. It’s why you feel tired long before you’ve done anything physically hard.

In fact, scrolling through social media fatigues your brain in the same way knowledge work does.

But the good news is, clarity doesn’t require doing less. It comes from pausing long enough for the mental noise to settle.

Here’s how you can start reclaiming attention in small ways:

📵 Leave the first ten minutes of your morning notification-free.
 Let your own thoughts be the first ones you hear.

🔄 If you find it hard to break the habit of scrolling on your phone, replace scrolling email or social media with scrolling your own photos on your phone. 

🪞 Before switching tasks, take one slow breath.
 It’s a micro-reset that clears the residue before it stacks.

📓 Write one line about what you want to feel, not just what you need to do.
 It trains your focus toward meaning, not momentum.

As they say: First you shape your habits, then your habits shape you. 

When you protect your attention, you don’t just manage your day better. 

You experience it more fully.

You don’t have to escape distraction completely.  

You just have to remember that time is the most powerful form of currency, and you get to choose how to spend it.

If your day starts with notifications  

We tend to protect our money better than our time.

If you had $86,400 in a bank account, and someone stole $1,000 from it, you wouldn’t just abandon the rest. 

But it’s easy to feel like a wasted morning, bad meeting, or rude encounter is enough to derail the rest of the day.

But deciding how much energy and attention to give each experience is a choice. 

You don’t need a new day. You just need a new minute.

Most of us wait for a big reset.

A Monday. A new month. The right mood. 

We plan our fresh starts like appointments, when the small change that starts now would compound to bigger returns later.  

Real change usually begins in the middle of an ordinary moment. 

One minute of awareness can shift your entire state.

That’s the power of using the small breaks between meetings or while waiting in line to pull yourself out of autopilot.
 
- You don’t need an hour of meditation or a weekend off.
- You just need a single grounded minute to reset.

When a day feels overwhelming, try this:

- Breathe deeply. Feel it move through your chest - it reminds your body you’re safe.
- Change your posture. Stand, stretch, move - motion resets emotion.
- Ask yourself, “What’s one thing I can focus on right now?” Let anything else go. 

Fresh starts don’t belong to new days. 

They belong to new minutes and the choice to be present for them.

3 hours.

That’s how long I spent deciding which software tool to use for a product launch retrospective. 

Then I realized I was treating a hat decision like a haircut.

Many of us do this. We burn mental energy on decisions that don't warrant it, which leaves less energy for the decisions that really matter.

One solution is the Hat, Haircut, Tattoo framework.

Every decision falls into one of three categories:

🧢 Hat Decisions → Easily reversible. Low stakes.

💈Haircut Decisions → Somewhat reversible. Worth discussing with others.

🔏 Tatoo Decisions → High stakes. Hard to undo. Require multiple perspectives and scenario planning.

Before making any decision, ask yourself: "Is this a hat, haircut, or tattoo?"

Hat decisions get made immediately. Tattoo decisions get the full analysis. Everything else gets a proportional response.

💡 Try this today: pick any one decision you’re facing, label it a Hat, Haircut or Tattoo, and pause before deciding how much attention it deserves. 

A simple pause gives your mind a chance to catch up and helps you act instead of react.

📌 Take a deep breath before replying to a message.
📌 Pause for a moment before agreeing to a new task.
📌 Reflect for 30 seconds before deciding if this is a Hat, Haircut, or Tattoo.

Even short pauses can turn scattered actions into calm, clear choices.

The result is faster execution on small things. Better judgment on big things. And way less decision fatigue.

The questions we ask quietly shape how we see ourselves and what we expect from the world around us.

The question “What am I doing with my life?” or “Where is this going?” feels profound, but rarely leads somewhere useful.

We don’t usually ask with curiosity, but with self-criticism. It’s the same tone we use when asking, “Why can’t I get anything done?” It sounds like inquiry, but stems from a quieter question underneath: “What’s wrong with me?”

When our questions come from shame, they’re not really about growth, they’re about comparison. They come from measuring ourselves against titles, timelines, or what we think we “should” have achieved by now.

Until a few months ago, I was trapped in that loop. I’d ask, “Where is this going?” constantly in an attempt to assess the value of where I was putting my time. But instead of delivering real insight, I ended up prematurely judging opportunities, and even relationships, and cutting them short before the real potential had the chance to unfold.

When I saw a video of my friend Tyler Shultz talking to students at Wake Forest University about how he makes decisions that embody his values, I realized l was asking the wrong kind of questions altogether.

Instead of “What am I doing with my life?” I started asking:

“What kind of person am I?”

Suddenly, worth wasn’t measured by outcomes–it was measured by values. Was I being compassionate? Was I showing up as the kind of person I wanted to become, regardless of the circumstances outside of my control?

As James Clear said, “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”

So maybe the real question isn’t, “What am I doing with my life?”

It’s:
“Am I living as the person I want to be?”

A salary range on a job description once convinced me I wasn’t “that level” yet.

The top of the range was nearly double what I’d ever made, so I assumed they wanted someone who looked nothing like me on paper.

But the application only required uploading a resume.
So I took 90 seconds and did it.

11 weeks later, I was one of four candidates in the final round.

I didn’t get the offer, but that experience changed me.

Until then, I didn’t realize how often I had been rejecting myself before anyone else had the chance.

It was easier to tell myself I "wasn’t qualified enough," "not ready," or "not the kind of person who gets jobs like that" than to risk hearing someone else say it.

But that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can’t get an opportunity you never seek. 

So here’s the reminder I needed, and maybe you do too:

Don’t count yourself out before you’re even in the conversation.

Don’t let fear or self-doubt make the decision for someone else.

If there’s even a spark of interest, give yourself a shot.

Let them be the ones to say no.

There's no external rejection as damaging as self-rejection. 

And really, if your goal is to minimize rejection instead of maximizing upside, you’re playing not to lose, not playing to win. 

The point isn’t getting every opportunity. 

It’s expanding the version of yourself you’re willing to believe in.

Because the only way to get bigger outcomes is to take bigger swings.

Every time you raise your hand, apply, reach out, or speak up, you quietly widen the life you allow yourself to step into.

You can’t control the result.

You just need the courage to try.
