Look what mess
I’ve got myself into.

I’ve qualified for the
European Masters
Swimming Championships.

This all started in October 2024.

Out of nowhere I decided I wanted
to try swimming competitively.

I had no real plan.

I didn’t know whether I would focus
on open water or Masters races.

I just knew one thing.

I love the water.

So I started training.

In January I entered my first race.

I actually learned how to dive
the day before the competition.

From there I just kept going.

Over the past year I competed in
eight Masters competitions and
four open water races.

Slowly improving times.
Learning. Training. Showing up.

There were setbacks too.

I recently competed in the Spanish
Masters Championships while
recovering from a two-month injury.

But something amazing happened.

I’ve now qualified for the European
Masters Swimming Championships
in Slovakia this August.

I’ll be racing the:

– 50m freestyle
– 100m freestyle
– 200m freestyle

For me this journey is about
much more than swimming.

It has been a very tough year
personally.

And the water gave me something
I didn’t expect.

Clarity.

When life feels uncertain,
sometimes the simplest things
bring you back to yourself.

Show up.
Put your head down.
Keep moving forward.

That’s what the pool has taught me.

Competing at the European level
would be an incredible milestone
in this journey.

I’ve created a small fundraiser
to help cover travel and
competition costs.

Are we training people for AI
or replacing them with it?

That is the real workforce question.

The World Economic Forum says
✦ 22% of jobs will change by 2030.
✦ 170 million new roles created.
✦ 92 million displaced.

But the real shift is not jobs.

It is tasks.

Almost 40% of global work
is now exposed to AI.

Yet most people will never
build AI systems.

They will work with them.

That means the most valuable
skills are changing.

Not just technical skills.
Human ones.

↳ analytical thinking
↳ leadership
↳ curiosity and lifelong learning
↳ resilience and adaptability
↳ AI literacy

And here is the uncomfortable truth.
Companies are investing in AI.
But very few are ready.

92% plan to increase
AI investment.

Only 1% say they are mature
in deployment.

More tools.

Less clarity.

No surprise many employees
hide when they use AI.

Recent research shows:
↳ over half of workers
do not disclose AI use

↳ many rely on AI outputs
without checking them

↳ only about two in five
organisations have policy

That is not a technology problem.
It is a leadership problem.

Upskilling today is not
a training course.

It is an operating system.
↳ skills
↳ workflows
↳ governance
↳ career pathways
↳ trust

The organisations that win
will not train AI engineers.

They will build
AI-capable teams.

Human-First AI means helping
people become exceptional
at their craft with AI.

That is how businesses scale.
And how people stay relevant.

When decision tables are diverse,
blind spots shrink.

And in AI, blind spots scale fast.

This isn’t about men vs women.

It’s about perspective.

Why most AI upskilling fails.

It’s not the tools.
It’s not the budget.

It’s leadership misalignment.

I walk into companies and see
five different mindsets in the room.

↳ One is scared.
↳ One is sceptical.
↳ One wants to race ahead.
↳ One is worried about compliance.
↳ One is just overwhelmed.

And then they run one AI workshop
for all of them.

↳Same slides.
↳Same tools.
↳Same message.

That’s the mistake.

AI upskilling is not a workshop.

It’s behaviour change.

If leaders are not aligned on
✦ why they’re using AI,
✦ what good looks like,
✦ and who owns the risk…

Training becomes noise.
Or worse, box-ticking.

Before you ask
 “What tools should we teach?”

Ask
 “What mindset are we leading from?”

That’s where real adoption starts.

Claude pulls the context.

Gamma turns it into a structured presentation.
Budget. Timeline. Deliverables.

No copying.
No rebuilding slides.
No losing momentum.

Of course being a Brit, naturally I’m biased. 

I’ll be there delivering AI leadership workshops for directors and I’m carving out time for a few proper conversations over coffee.

Not a pitch.

Not a sales meeting.

A real discussion about what Human-Led AI transformation actually looks like inside an organisation.

Because here’s the truth:

Most companies are experimenting.

Very few are transforming.

The questions I’m having with boards and leadership teams right now are about:

• Governance without paralysis
• Risk without fear
• Tooling without chaos
• Innovation without losing trust

And most importantly:

How do we build genuine AI capability across teams instead of running a workshop and hoping for the best?

I’ll be joined by Owen Davies Between us, we’ve seen what works and what quietly fails behind the scenes.

Limited slots across the two days.

I don’t know if it’s just me, 

but life feels really fast right now.

In a good way. I’m not complaining. I’m actually really grateful. 

There are lots of opportunities, lots of conversations, travel coming up, projects moving. Things I’ve worked towards for years are actually happening.

But it’s full on.

And sometimes I just stop and think, wow, this is a lot.

The one thing that keeps me balanced is swimming. Honestly, if I didn’t have that, I think I’d feel quite scattered.

When I’m in the pool, it’s just simple. Length after length-follow the black line.
 No phone. No strategy. No thinking about content or clients or AI or anything else. Just breathe, move, repeat.

And it always reminds me of the same thing.

There’s no shortcut.

Not in sport. Not in business. Not in building anything that lasts.

You can’t talk your way into strength. You can’t manifest your way into discipline. You just have to put the work in. Quietly. Consistently. When nobody really cares or is watching.

People see the outside bits. The talks. The companies. The growth. The “success.”

They don’t see the prep. The hours. The second guessing. The getting back up when something doesn’t land. The boring, repetitive reps.

That’s the real work.

So if things feel intense for you right now as well, maybe that’s not a bad sign. Maybe it means you’re in motion.

Just make sure you’ve got something that anchors you.

And then keep going.

It’s not glamorous. It’s just consistent.

But that’s what actually pays off.

Looking back, I didn’t like school.

It was always sport and art for me.

Academics felt like something
that was just drummed into you.

There was no context.

And I think that’s why it felt
so difficult.

What’s the point of learning something
if you don’t know why you’re learning it?

Later I moved away.

Life suddenly had context.

If you want to survive in another country
you have to learn.

You have to communicate.

So I learned French in Paris.
German in Hamburg and Munich.
Spanish in Madrid and Barcelona.
Italian in Milan and Rome.

Not in classrooms.

Just through life.

Learning suddenly had purpose.

And that’s the thing.

Learning comes in so many ways.

Sometimes it’s school.

Sometimes it’s language.

Sometimes it’s simply necessity.

Then I got curious about sport
so I learned about nutrition.

I got curious about art
so I did a degree in History of Art.

Later I wanted to understand business
so I did an alternative MBA.

And then something unexpected happened.

I stumbled into AI.

Not as a technical person.

Just as someone curious
about the tools.

I started exploring them.

Then sharing what I found.

People began saying
they liked the way I explained things.

They liked what I chose to show.

So I kept sharing.

And that turned into teaching.

Workshops.

Companies.

Conversations with people
all over the world.

And when I look at the whole path
it actually feels simple.

Life is about learning.

Learning about the world.

Learning about people.

Learning about ourselves.

It’s constant growth.

And honestly, I think that’s
the whole reason we’re alive.

To keep becoming
a better version of ourselves.

Even in the age of AI.

Maybe especially in the age of AI.

Meet this Week's Woman in Tech 🥳 

Amanda Askell grew up in Prestwick, a small seaside town on Scotland's west coast, raised by her mother, a teacher. As a kid, she devoured Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The big questions grabbed her early.

She studied fine art and philosophy at the University of Dundee - painting and thinking about existence simultaneously. Then University of Oxford for a BPhil in philosophy. Then New York University for a PhD, where her thesis tackled one of philosophy's strangest corners: what happens to ethics when you apply it to infinite populations?

In a field obsessed with computer science degrees, she arrived at AI with a completely different toolkit: moral philosophy, ethics, and a deep comfort with ambiguity.

She worked at OpenAI on safety research, then left when the company shifted toward capabilities over caution. She joined Anthropic, where she now leads the team responsible for Claude's character - its personality, values, and moral reasoning. 

She wrote Claude's 30,000-word instruction manual. Anthropic's president Daniela Amodei says "you almost feel a little bit of Amanda's personality" when talking to Claude.

TIME named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in AI. The Wall Street Journal's headline: "Her job, simply put, is to teach Claude how to be good."

She's committed to donating 10% of her lifetime income and half her equity to charity.

Her philosophy: AI models will inevitably develop a sense of self and someone needs to make sure that self has good values. That someone is a painter-philosopher from a small Scottish town.
