How a Michelin-star potato changed how I think about business.

I went to a Michelin restaurant for my birthday.

It was one of the most memorable food experiences I’ve ever had.

One dish in particular blew my mind.

They serve a hot-and-cold potato.
Hot on the outside.
Cold on the inside.

In 34 years, I’d never really thought about temperature as a variable in food.

But that one detail completely changed the experience.

And it got me thinking, what's the one variable people overlook in accounting firms?

Everyone knows clean books, solid systems, and accurate numbers are important.

But what gets missed?

For me, it's timing.

Month-end reports tell you what happened after the fact. By the time you see the numbers, the decisions are already behind you.

Real-time or near real-time financials change that. When you can make decisions with fresh data, a whole new world of opportunities opens up.

Same data.
Different moment.
Totally different experience.

In accounting, timing is a variable that can completely alter the outcomes.

I’ve been obsessed with the Japanese concept of umami.

Umami roughly translates to “the essence of deliciousness.”

It’s about balance, subtlety, and drawing out the natural qualities of good ingredients.

Nothing jumps out.
Nothing feels forced.
Everything works together.

That's exactly how I want to come off to my clients.

Not as a firm offering a collection of services.
But as an overall experience.

Most accountants try to create value by adding more. Deliverables. Dashboards. Meetings.

But "more" doesn't always mean "better".

A great service gives clients peace of mind.

It feels like everything is under control.
Like problems surface early.
Like decisions are easier than they used to be.

Clients don’t experience that as individual actions but as a whole.

Nothing flashy.
Nothing missing.

Just a sense that the business finally makes sense.

That’s the standard I care about.

That’s umami.

One of the most common mistakes I see in growing firms:

Confusing capacity with capability.

Just because you have time doesn’t mean you should take the work.

This usually doesn’t show up as a big decision.

It shows up in small moments.

You start with a tight core: Monthly accounting. Clean closes. Clear reporting.

Then something extra sneaks in.
“Can you help with sales tax?”
“Can you take care of payroll too?”
“Can you just fill this out?”

You look at the calendar.
There’s space.
So you say yes.

Nothing breaks right away.

But now there’s:
• Another checklist someone has to remember
• Another exception that doesn’t fit the process
• Another handoff that only one person understands

And slowly,
Month-end takes longer.
Reviews require more context.
Mistakes are harder to catch.

That’s the difference between capacity and capability.

Capacity asks if you can squeeze it in.

Capability asks if this is something you want to be excellent at, every month, for every client.

Strong firms don’t decide based on open hours. They decide based on what they want their work to look like when things are busy.

If the work pulls you away from what you want to be known for, it doesn’t belong in your scope.

💠 AEG Performance & Coaching - Todd Greider, ACC - I don’t recall how I came across Todd’s newsletters, but I remember the first one being so timely leading up to my first large speaking engagement. His topics are often about MINDSET. The elements he talks about are so in alignment with the way I think about things, and he elevates those ideas to a level that gives me stronger groundedness and focus on those values.
 
💠 The CAS Cache - 💸 Luke Templin - he always hits on CAS INSIGHTS that are super relevant for building CAS and developing advisory services. He shares personal stories, experiences, and analogies that make things understandable and approachable. He does this is in speaking sessions on CFO/FP&A topics too. 
 
💠 The Net Effect - Tailor Hartman - super clear, practical takes on FIRM RUNNING. He puts words to things I’ve dealt with but never really named, and once he spells it out, it just clicks. He has great takes on firm operations and client interactions. They’re short, too. He sticks to one main point, so it’s easy to keep up with. It’s a quick read but ends up having way more impact than you’d expect for something you can read in just a few minutes.

Honestly, he's just a normal guy. Just waiting for his Uber at SFO (he had an Uber Lux, I was waiting for an UberX Share) and minding his own business.

So I asked him about his thoughts about AI and accounting.

He talked about how if humans are still doing deterministic accounting work in 10 years, something has gone very wrong. He talked about how everything that's rule-based will be automated and how humans shouldn't be in the "compute layer".

The focus was on system design & thinking instead of repetitive precision. He also provided a stern warning to the firms that resist the advancement - they'll disappear quietly. Very Musk.

We had to wait forever for our Ubers because it was rush hour, so he also talked about video games (mostly Overwatch), aliens, and that one time he smoked on Joe's podcast.

Pretty cool.

I do really think that's how he would respond to questions about AI and accounting, but you can't trust anything on the internet. Yet somehow, 3 months from now people will still be asking me about meeting Elon Musk, rather than spending 60 seconds reading this and understanding that the selfie was AI generated.

***Note - Elon is quite a controversial figure and in no way, shape, or form is the intent to praise or support his actions. Much of which has caused many people grief. The intent is merely a hypothetical foray into what a tech-forward AI business owner would say about accounting. Next time we’re going with someone who is far less “out there”. Yes, he is farrrr from normal..***

It was in my kid’s ear for over 60 days.

He told us a number of times over the course of ~ 2 months that he had shoved it in his ear.

We would get a light out, look in the ear, nothing. We cleaned his ears, several times…nothing.

“Sure buddy, can you hear ok? Does it hurt?”

He could hear fine and occasionally talked about how it hurt, but otherwise totally normal.

One day, I hear “ROMAN! I think I see it!”

Ummm what? There’s no way.

Impromptu urgent care trip.

Sure enough. A large corn kernel had been plugged in his ear for over 60 days. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse than it was - no damage. 

I felt so guilty as a parent. He told us. Over and over again. We thought it was the boy who cried wolf. Lesson learned.

I’m sure many parents have stories similar to this one, but it certainly related to our work where time and time again we tell clients - “we may want to pay attention to X metric or Y trend based on this data…” Crickets. Nothing. Until it rears its head and starts causing problems, then we get it fixed.

Don’t be the parent who neglects the truths from their kid…or accountant 😅

I used to get SO nervous.

The spotlight effect.

I cared way more about my ability to present, what others thought of me, and that every small word/action was under the microscope.

Turns out it was more ego driven than anything. Nobody cared more about those things than myself.

So. I let it go. In some ways, I stopped caring. Caring about others’ perception of me. Caring about making a mistake. Caring about the ‘script’.

I started to focus more on the — “we’re in this together” mentality, the “we’re all at different stages of learning” mentality. But primarily, I focused more on trying to help others.

That approach was so much healthier and actually led to more calm nerves when on a big stage. It also led to far more engaging conversations and relationships after sharing my experiences.

I’m extending more of that ethos in my off-stage work life as well. Focusing more on building relationships and helping others. What’s the worst that could happen? 😃

Auto-block.

Hey outbound sales people - can we stop doing this?

The first time I saw this, I was like - oh that's cool! Well played.

Now, it's an automatic block. Yep, it hit my inbox through my Superhuman filter, but now it'll never hit my inbox again - phew.

Instead of doing this, try a non-scalable approach to sales.

Take an extra 3 minutes to do a little bit of research and send a more personalized email. Actually type it. Type the email. My response rate is wayyy better when I can tell that a human took actual time to send a note - even if it is a pitch.

Yikes! A *supposed to be* silly AI generated image and hypothetical 'conversation' of mine went viral over the weekend. Primarily fueled by a very realistic AI image of a controversial figure and the power of the algorithm.

It brought up some interesting conversations and reflections.

1. It feels kind of....ick? A little unsettling? An odd blurred line between fact and fiction. A questioning of - is anything I see....real?

2. AI ethics. At want point to we retain control over our own images, names, likeness, etc.? Due to licensing and trademarks, you can't generate an image of Mickey Mouse, but name any prominent public figure and there you have it - in a completely fabricated manner.

3. The algorithm absolutely pumped the content. It didn't push the content of me sharing something about my entrepreneurial journey or industry tips & tricks. Sure, it garnered engagement due to the shock factor, but even in the post I mention that it's AI generated - the algorithm doesn't care. 

So now, because most people don't read entire posts and people may assume that was real....is there a degree of personal credibility lost or is it just how creative social media goes these days? How much of what we see and believe is actually AI generated and/or totally fabricated (I'm guessing a lot, which is why reading/digging into details is important)?

Many folks encourage entrepreneurship, including myself.

That said, there’s a glorification of it across social media. One that doesn’t address the real sacrifices required to reach desireable outcomes.

Stability
Sleep
Mental Health
Boundaries
Vacations
Comfort

You step into the world of unpredictability. Financial uncertainty. Constant “on” environment. Decision stress. Loneliness. A clear path forward.

So, why encourage it? I like to encourage others towards entrepreneurship (if they show interest), because you have a greater than zero percent chance of it becoming exactly what you desire - even if it takes years and years. If you don’t try, you may always wonder “what if?”

That said, you have to be prepared for it to completely re-wire your life.

Ready to be constantly thinking about it?
Ready to give up that steady W2 & benefits?
Ready to grind early and late hours to get it off the ground?
Ready for the pressure of delivering for your customers?
Ready for the admin, legal, and compliance?
Ready for the impact to your loved ones?

Sometimes it feels like running in 30mph headwinds with 50+ mph gusts. Like you’re not making any progress at all, but you keep putting one foot in front of the other ✊
