The start of a new year has a way of surfacing an important question for founders:
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘁?

For many founders, January is a time to set goals and plan for the future:
• What do I want this business to become?
• What does the next chapter actually look like?
• Am I building with purpose or simply reacting to what is in front of me?

The most successful outcomes I see aren’t rushed. They’re deliberate. They start 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 a transaction is ever on the table, with clarity around goals, alignment among stakeholders, and preparation that creates 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, not pressure.

As we step into the new year, I’m excited to continue partnering with founders and fellow advisors who are thinking strategically about growth, transition, and legacy, and who understand that great outcomes are better engineered than improvised.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of moderating a General Session at the AM&AA Winter Conference: “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀"

In today’s M&A market, branding isn’t just a marketing exercise, it’s can be a value driver. Buyers increasingly reward companies with clear positioning, customer loyalty, and pricing power, which can be achieved with strong strategic branding and result in higher multiples.

I was joined by two excellent panelists, Bryan Jenkins and Paige Wiese , who shared practical, real-world perspectives on how branding directly influences enterprise value and buyer conviction. The discussion reinforced what I see repeatedly in sell-side work: the businesses that invest early in clarity and credibility tend to outperform when they go to market.

For founders, it’s all about building a durable, defensible business that buyers understand and value. When done well, it becomes a quiet but powerful lever in a successful transition.
