Daniel is a Senior Software Engineer at Google, where he tech-leads, designs and builds forecasting & pricing systems for ads worth billions of dollars. These are distributed systems that run on thousands of machines, process terabytes of data per query and combine Machine Learning modeling with game-like simulation of tens of thousands ad campaigns - all happening in real-time to enable thousands of concurrent users of buying tools like AdWords and DBM.

Daniel wields a rare combination of deep technical skills, a user-centric drive and an ability to align multiple teams towards a common goal - launching and landing high quality cutting edge products.

Daniel co-founded a tech startup that brought machine vision to the consumer photo space 10 years ago, he was an invited speaker at an ML dev conference in Zurich and speaks at startup events regularly. He holds multiple patents with Google, is published in a peer-reviewed ML journal from his time at IBM Research and is a Google Code Jam on-site finalist.

I vibe coded a sun/shadow modeling app this morning. 

David Jayatillake made a good point in my comments on a joke I made about posting their local vibe coded apps, that as much as it's a joke, there is a ton of utility in those local apps. 

David actually wrote about this in his substack this week, linked in comments. 

I have been hacking around on some things I use personally but after reading David's post I thought, maybe I should commit to trying to develop an App a day. I then decided this was too ambitious but I do think I can do at least one a week. 

This week, I was wondering about whether any portion of my back yard is completely in shadow all year round. My sense was that along the southern fence it was but I wasn't totally sure. This is helpful information for both planting and for storing surfboards out of the sun. 

Then I thought, this would be a fun app to build, so this morning with the help of Google AI Studio I created a purely vibe-coded app that allows you to input your backyard dimensions, latitude and longitude, fence height, and house height and then uses sliders to model the sunlight and shadow at different times of the day and year. Pretty cool! 

It's not perfect, as it doesn't allow for modeling neighboring homes and the home shape is just a box (accurate for my house and common in my neighborhood but not useful in plenty of other places). 

But that goes to David's point, it doesn't need to work for anyone else, it works for me!
