I am a communications leader with 15+ years of experience advising executives, brands, and institutions on how to communicate clearly, credibly, and effectively in high-stakes moments.

At Comerica Bank, I lead social media and content strategy across small business, commercial, and retail banking, as well as corporate philanthropy, financial literacy, and community engagement. I oversee a high-volume content operation, approximately 100 pieces of content per month and the production of live streaming events on LinkedIn and Facebook that bring the brand’s voice directly to audiences in real time.

Previously, I served as Vice President of Corporate Communications for Comerica’s California market, where I led media relations, executive speechwriting, crisis communications, and served as a spokesperson. 

In that role, I worked closely with senior leaders to prepare for interviews, public appearances, and moments where clarity, message discipline, and credibility mattered most.

Earlier in my career, I was a television reporter and anchor. That newsroom experience shaped how I approach executive communication today: with an understanding of how journalists think, what audiences listen for, and how quickly a message can succeed or fail under pressure.

Alongside my corporate role, I advise founders and senior leaders on executive media performance, visibility, and on-camera presence through my SmartPresence advisory practice. The focus is practical and risk-aware: helping leaders show up prepared, composed, and aligned with their organization’s goals when the stakes are high. 

This work blends traditional media preparation with modern tools, including AI-assisted video analysis, to accelerate insight and improvement.

I’m always open to thoughtful conversations with communications leaders, founders, and executives about storytelling, media readiness, and executive visibility.

University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law

McGeorge School of Law here in Sacramento just decided to dive into the Cyber field, and I will be teaching 20+ law students Cybersecurity Law and Policy in early January 2018. It will include some history of the Internet, some recent history of hackers, ransomeware, malware, threats to our nation's infrastructure, and a few speakers.  It should be a lot of fun for all concerned.

The University of the Pacific began a new Masters Degree Program in Cybersecurity in September 2017, with ten courses required for the degree. I will be teaching the Cybersecurity Law and Policy course as course number 10, beginning in May 2018. I taught The Law of Armed Conflict, which deals with the history of war, the Geneva Conventions, torture, targeting, current armed conflicts around the world, cyber war, drones etc. for four years at McGeorge Law School. Also during that period, I taught Professional Writing, which assisted 3L and 4L students to develop their writing skills to take the California Bar Exam.

I was a sole practitioner in private practice, and was a member of the Sacramento County Indigent Defense Panel for over 25 years. I reached Level VI on that panel, which is their highest rating, and allows private criminal counsel to be appointed to both Lead and Keenan Counsel on death penalty cases. I had over 100 felony jury trials to completion, as well as several capitol cases. I was also a member of the Federal Defender's Defense Panel for the Eastern District of California, and handled numerous cases in the federal arena, including homicide and major drug cases to a jury completion. During that time period, I served on numerous committees of the Sacramento County Bar Association, and was awarded their President's Award on two occasions. I was also given The Indigent Defense Panel's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to clients and to the IDP on two occasions.

I am a retired Army Infantry Full Colonel, who had fun attending such Army schools as Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces, Pathfinder, Panama Jungle School and The Army War College. It was my honor to command an Airborne Infantry Company in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam in 1970 as a Captain. In my legal career, I learned my trade as a criminal trial lawyer by first serving as Deputy District Attorney in Modesto, California, and later opening my own criminal defense office in Sacramento, California. I completed over 100 felony jury trials in both Federal and State courts, and was appointed both Lead and Keenan Counsel on several death penalty cases. I then taught both The Law of Armed Conflict, and Legal Writing at McGeorge School of Law, UOP,  and later taught Cybersecurity Law and Policy at both UOP in Stockton with computer science students working on their Masters Degree in Cybersecurity, and law students at McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. I have now gone back into the Criminal Defense Arena with The Kavinoky Law Firm out of Encino, California.
