A guy walks into my bar.

Orders a pint of Pale Ale.
Then says he wants it for the price of half a pint.

So I tell him,
“Unfortunately, I can’t do that.
Perhaps you just have half a pint instead, if that’s as far as your budget can stretch.”

He kicks off.
“That’s insane! Ridiculous! How dare you! How do you live with yourself?”

So what did I do?
I gave him the pint.
At half price.

And for a fleeting moment, I thought:
“What a winner I am.”

No.

That’s not a win.
That’s failure dressed up as customer service.

Anyone who thinks that’s sales isn’t a salesperson.
They’re a shitty order taker.
And the world is full of them.

Real salespeople don’t cave to noise, guilt, or pressure.

They know their worth.
They hold their price.

The barman didn’t win.
He just taught the punter to ask for a discount next time, too.

Most inbound leads are BS.

Tire kickers.
Time wasters.
Freeloaders.

People who want to steal your brain for free with zero intention of ever paying you.
And yet, you keep entertaining them.

Here’s the simplest way to fix it: charge for your initial call.

And before you start whining, “We can’t do that,” let me stop you.

I don’t want excuses. I want a valid reason.

And don’t say “None of our competitors do it.”
If none of your competitors are doing something, that’s usually a bloody good reason why you should!

You want a USP?
Start valuing your own time.

People who give for free need money.
People who charge for their time are often doing just fine.

(that rhymes, so it must be true)

So how do you do it? Simple.

When someone reaches out, I say:

“I really appreciate you wanting to speak. I get a lot of requests for chats.

To separate those who are just curious from those who genuinely need help, I ask you to book a consult call.


There’s a small fee, which comes off your investment if we decide to move forward.”

That’s it.

Polite, clear, professional.

What happened when I started doing this?
85% disappeared.
Good.
They were never buying anyway.

The remaining 15%?
They booked. They paid.
And my close rate went through the roof.

People who pay to talk to you are showing you something most leads never will… intent.

And if someone still wants to pick your brain, fine.

They can pay for the privilege.

My first ever sales meeting was with a complete con man.

Peter ran a lead gen agency that hired me. 

For a month, I did nothing but listen to others make calls.

Then one morning, he told me I'd be joining him for a client meeting.

Big names. Fancy office. People in suits who looked like they'd eaten smaller agencies for breakfast.

The Chairman. The MD. The BD Director. 

And Peter - the man who could lie with a smile that'd make politicians blush.

He promised them the world. Leads, riches, fame.

The only problem?

- We didn't sell anything. 
- We just booked meetings.

Then came the punchline.

Peter looked at me and said, 

"Benjamin here is our most experienced account manager. He'll handle your campaign personally."

I was 4 weeks in. Hadn't made a single cold call. Didn't even know what half our clients actually did.

They all turned and stared at me. 

I said something - I still don't remember what - but it worked.

A week later, I landed my first meeting: 

The Times Newspaper. 


The client was thrilled.

That month, I booked 14 meetings.

Here's what I learned:

𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁.

And never underestimate how much creatives love hearing about themselves.

Looking back, I realize most of sales is exactly that. 
Acting confident before you feel confident.

Saying less, listening more.

Learning that half the battle is convincing yourself you belong in the room.

If you're new to sales, remember this:

- You'll screw up. 
- You'll bluff your way through. 
- But if you keep showing up, you'll get good.

And when you do, the people who once made you nervous will be asking YOU for advice.

The truth is, we all start somewhere. That terrifying first meeting taught me more about sales than any training ever could.

Sometimes the best lessons come from being thrown in the deep end.

Your cold call pitch sucks.
And I’m going to show you how to do it the right way, babycakes. 

The hardest part of building a 30-second pitch is figuring out what pain you actually fix.

Most salespeople go in with this lazy, beige nonsense:

“Not prospecting enough.”
“Not making enough money.”
“Not getting in front of enough people.”

That’s not pain.
That’s wallpaper.
They’re not pain indicators. 
They’re vague, sweeping statements that mean absolutely nothing.
It’s like casting a driftnet and hoping something, somewhere, bites.

And that’s why your cold calls flop.

Your pitch isn’t supposed to sound like a company brochure.
It’s supposed to make a prospect stop and think, 
“Hang on… that’s actually happening to me.”

So ask yourself:

🧠 What specific problem does your product actually fix?
🧠 What does that problem look like in the wild?
🧠 How would it show up in your prospect’s day before they even knew it was a problem?

Instead of, “We help sales teams prospect better.”
Say, “You’ve got reps who hide in their inbox instead of picking up the phone.”


Now you’ve hit a nerve.

Your job is to identify pain indicators… visible symptoms your prospect can recognise even if they don’t yet know what’s causing them.


Go ask your sales director, “What do we actually fix?”

See if they can answer without blurting out one of those boring, sweeping clichés.

I’ll bet most can’t.

Nailing recruitment prospecting? 
Completed it, mate.

Most sales calls start with:
“Hi, is now a good time?”
“I just wanted to introduce myself…”
“Can I have 5 minutes of your time?”

And that’s why you keep getting hung up on.

Here’s how I start mine:
“I’ll be upfront. This is actually a sales call.
You can hang up now, or give me 30 seconds and then decide.”

That line alone filters 90% of the nonsense.
Why? Because I’m not begging.
I’m leading.

(Ignore those who say they hate the line; they're the vocal minority, the Thunbergs of sales)

Then, in those 30 seconds, I go straight for the pain…

“I typically get invited in by healthcare groups who are sick of recruiters wasting their time.

“It’s often a race to the bottom with CVs that don’t match or candidates who would have been a good fit but inexplicably vanish…

“...or perhaps they talk big and deliver little. But you're probably gonna tell me that’s never happened to you?”

(Sarcasm is a beautiful thing when delivered right.)

They laugh. They disagree. They engage.
Because I may just have described their life.

The call flows naturally. I don’t pitch; I diagnose.

I ask how long it’s been going on.
What they’ve already tried to do to fix it.
Whether they think this is just the way things have to be.

Then, when they start venting (and they always do), I drop this:
“Look, I don’t know if I can fix it. I don’t know enough yet….

“But I have fixed it for many people. Let's pretend I could AND YOU BELIEVE IT…

“...is there any reason you wouldn’t want to meet for half an hour and explore it?”

They say yes.
Every time.

Because sales is about being real, calm, and in control of the frame, and nothing to do with being slick.

The best way to sell is to stop acting like a salesman.

I recently booked an appointment with a bloated loud mouth sales coach under an assumed name.

This bloke bangs on about making millions, his clients making millions, him being the best.

Ironically, he gives his time away for free to anyone who will book on his calendar. 

I'd no intention of showing up, just curious.

He sends an email saying "I'm in the meeting"

I ignore.

He sends another 5 minutes later asking me "Do I want to reschedule?"

Yup. He's definitely making millions when he seeks reschedules of FREE NO SHOWS.

A guru isn't a guru if they state it about themself.

I didn't invent a revolutionary sales method.

I just nuked the broken ones everyone else swears by.

When I started in sales, I noticed something bizarre happening.

Sales felt like a competitive sport. 
Two players battling it out. 
One trying to dominate the other.

Win → Lose. Never win → win.

That's when it clicked for me.

Sales wasn't about "winning" at all. It was about uncovering truth.

Just like in a courtroom.

- You present your case clearly. 
- You argue it effectively.

But the verdict?

That's completely out of your hands.

So I stopped seeing myself as a "salesman" trying to close deals.

I became an advocate for the right outcome.

My job wasn't to convince anyone of anything. It was to determine whether we should actually work together.

That meant accepting that "No Sale" could be the perfect result. As long as we reached it honestly.

Because there's a massive difference between:

→ Losing a deal because you sucked at selling
→ Walking away because the fit simply wasn't there

Here's how I started treating every sales conversation like a legal case:

1. Does this person actually have a problem I can solve?
2. Do they even acknowledge they have that problem?
3. Can they convince me they genuinely want to fix it?
4. Can they afford the time, money, and commitment it requires?
5. How and when will they realistically make this decision?

If I couldn't get clear answers to those questions, I wasn't going to waste time pretending I could sell them anything.

Too many salespeople chase symptoms without asking whether the patient actually wants the cure.

Once I flipped that entire mindset, everything transformed:

Shorter sales cycles. 
Fewer time-wasters. 
Dramatically better results.

Because when you sell like a lawyer building a case, you stop begging for the verdict and start controlling the entire process.

The question is:

Do you chase every single "maybe" that comes your way?

Or do you have the discipline to walk when the case simply isn't worth fighting?

Sales is not a numbers game.
Stop saying it is.

If you’ve had 49 sales meetings in a row and didn’t close one, you don’t need “better numbers.”
You need to learn how to sell.

That result says one of two things:
1. You’re getting in front of the wrong people.
2. You’re getting in front of the right people…  and doing a terrible job.

Listen to Professor Dennehy:

Prospecting is a numbers game.
Selling is a skill.

Prospecting comes from gold mining.
You sift through a lot of dirt to find gold.

You’ll make a hundred calls, hit dozens of dead ends, but somewhere in there are the few who actually need what you’ve got.

That’s the game.

You can’t predict when you’ll strike gold, so you keep digging.
But once you’re in front of someone, once you’ve found the gold, you can’t blame “the numbers” anymore.

That’s where skill kicks in.
That’s where structure, process, and conversation actually matter.

If you keep saying “sales is a numbers game,” it’s probably because your numbers are crap.

So, stop hiding behind the statistics.
Get trained. Get better.

Or keep pretending another 49 meetings will somehow make you good at your job.

Most salespeople don't fail because they lack skill.

They fail because they're not in control.

Painful truth, right?

But it's the one frustration I hear most when people first reach out to me.

They say things like:

→ "I can't seem to move deals forward."
→ "They keep saying they'll think about it."
→ "Prospects just go quiet."

Here's what's really happening:

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱. 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀.

And it's not their fault. It's what they were taught.

We're raised to believe that the person with the money is the one in charge.

That they have the power because they can buy.

Wrong.

Money has no power unless someone agrees to take it.

Ever tried to buy something but the seller refused? A display stereo, maybe.

You're waving cash, begging them to take it, and they still say no.

Who had the power then? Not you.

It's the same in sales.

If you act like the person with the money controls the game, you'll always play defense.

You'll wait for approval instead of leading the process.

That belief shapes your behavior. And your behavior shapes your results.

Here's the fix:

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹.

Start acting like the one deciding if the deal goes ahead, not begging for it.

Ask the questions, don't just answer them.

Disqualify fast, not last.

That's when selling becomes fun again.

You stop chasing. 
You start leading. 
And deals start closing faster because you're finally the one driving.

If you don't fix this, the cost isn't just lost sales. It's your confidence.

And once that goes, you're done.
