The internet is a dangerous place.

"I will look for you, and I will find you."

It's a famous quote from the action movie "Taken" starring Liam Neeson. And the internet has no mercy.

The whole incident started when someone saw a Singaporean-registered car pumping RON95 petrol in Johor. For those unaware, foreign-registered cars can only pump RON97 when in Malaysia.

But what made the headlines was that the couple taped the car's number plate to look like a Malaysian car. And by law, that's already illegal. I applaud their creativity, which helped their car rise to fame and popularity across the media.

The internet has no mercy, and it will hunt you down. And, funny enough, the car came from a neighbourhood where I previously stayed, called Yishun. Looking at the photos, I knew exactly where it was.

As a result, the police investigated the incident and summoned the vehicle's owner to report to the police station. A hefty fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, a jail term of between one and five years, or both await.

Was it worth saving a couple of bucks?

Circumventing (bukan sunat ya) a system is never a good thing. And before we point fingers at our Singaporean friends, these are residents who hold PR status (in the video, they spoke some BM). So, you know I know lah.

Plus, the number plate has the letters S, M, L, and J.

Don't let our neighbours scold us back with similanjiao loh for our attitude loh. So, be aware of what you're doing in public, because the internet is very unforgiving, and you could face hefty fines and jail time.

It starts in February 2026.

Yet, my self-doubt continues.

While I'm glad I got the dates set in stone, getting the teachers in to share was a challenge for me. I have been sitting on it for the longest time because of it.

You would think that I'm a siao (that's my surname by the way) for having this thought, but I doubt myself quite frequently. And before you go, "Eh, you sure? Eric Siew can self-doubt?" Please loh, I am only human.
Uncertainty, fear, rejection, and all those negative feelings, I get them, too.

I have a lansi face, but inside, I'm like pudding. Sweet, soft, and fluffy. 
Okay, wait. We're getting off point here.

The point is, I risau jugak whether the teachers would respond. And yes, they did within 24 hours. All of them agreed to attend and share their thoughts on the suggested topics. And I'm taking a considerable risk jio'ing them to come over from Singapore, China, and even Australia.

So, as you can see, the biggest hurdle for us is not so much about the task ahead, but the blocks and dindings we put in our minds that stop us from progressing.

The first part of the fourth season of MKK starts February 4th, 2026. Moving forward, we'll call it MKK Social, as these sessions include networking and casual learning. It starts from 10 am to 12 pm on Wednesdays.

For the hardcore learners, there will be MKK Foundry. This one leh, a bit more kaw. These are sessions that would last for a full day, going in-depth into specific topics. I'll reveal more details about it soon after I finish self-doubting.

A safe space.

That's the goal for building this.

Many told me that building a community is a lost cause. It won't last, and you definitely can't make a living out of it. I can't say it's not true, because it is indeed challenging. It's tough to bring people together frequently. It's hard to find those who share similar values. And more importantly, it's not easy to charge.

We all want a place of belonging, where we can express ourselves and have someone to listen to us in our low moments.

However, having a space where you can come back to requires us to tend it with care. And I can't do it alone. Over the past years, I kept costs low by working with parties to reduce rental costs, supplementing them with other revenue streams, getting free stuff (like food or coffee), and receiving monetary support.

Truth is, it shouldn't be that way. It's a collective effort. Yes, I can lead. But we have to sustain it together, grow it into something meaningful. I'm only one ah pek, and I can only do so much.

MKK Social is officially open for registration. It's a pressure-free space for you to share experiences and learn from one another without proving anything to anyone.

You don't have to put up a guard. It's just a place to find your people who share similar values. If you're tired of others actively seeking you out for transactional purposes, you won't find them here.

The first half of the season runs from Feb to Jun 2026. There are 10 sessions within it. The RM600 pass is not a fee for the sessions.

It's a space where you can return to. It isn't just about attending talks, but about giving yourself one purposeful pause every few weeks to reset and recharge, making it part of your rhythm to be present each time.

I enjoyed this movie more than Avatar.

But it may not appeal to you.

It's not for you unless you've had a similar growing-up experience to mine, because it hits home in a different way.

Recently, we watched the movie "Back to the Past" as a family, starring Louis Koo. Among my generation, we call him Koo Tin-lok. Of course, my kids didn't understand initially why I brought them to watch it. It was their first exposure to Cantonese movies at the cinemas.

Here comes the interesting part.

It was a continuation of a TVB drama I watched more than two decades ago. That's like over 20 years ago. And what makes it even more nostalgic is the cast of actors and actresses in the movie. They're still part of it. That itself, just like the movie title, brought me back to the past.

There were no on-demand streaming services then.

I remember I had to walk through the VHS rental shop to ask if the episodes were up. Intimidating, if you know how introverted I was back then. For your favourite TVB dramas, you do it. K-drama fans, no offence, but you can step aside.

Plus, scenes from the TVB series would appear in this movie. It takes you back again and again, reliving those nostalgic moments when I was in secondary school.

So far, I've yet to encounter a movie that brought back such a gush of memories swarming through me. And it was in Cantonese, with Koo Tin-lok, and you can expect his sarcastic and witty remarks throughout the show. Again, betul-betul syok.

For those in SG watching the Mandarin-dubbed movie, please consider watching the Cantonese version in JB instead. Otherwise, you're not doing yourself justice.

Otherwise, you won't find out what "deng lei ge fai" means.

If you're a long-time TVB fan who watched the previous "Back to the Past" drama series, you know who Koo Tin-lok is and understand Cantonese and its hidden jokes, then this movie is for you.

Yes, it's super niche.

Yet, fans will love it. And Koo Tin-lok knows it.

Would you give yours up?

Many did, and became Singaporeans.

According to a recent report by the National Registration Department (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara), 61,116 Malaysians renounced their citizenship over the last five years.

93.78% of the renunciations went to SG. As for the rest, to the other parts of the world.

If we look at our total population of 34.1 million orangs, it's only 0.18%. So, the annual renunciation rate is ~0.036%. Looking at the numbers, it's not much. But from an economic point of view, it is.

We're still losing talent to SG, especially the young ones aged 21 to 40, which accounts for approximately 60%.

As a result, our brains kena drained. It's a disadvantage to us in the long run. But what makes it more surprising is that more women went over than men. Many renounced their husbands' nationality for legal ease.

So, that means Singaporean men cannot find a wife in Singapore. Or we guys are not as hensem as Singaporean friends lah.

Jokes aside, many went over for better career prospects. Money is still a primary motivation factor.

Like it or not, the 3x multiplier rate (even with a stronger ringgit) is still the most powerful tool to build our wealth. Having worked in Singapore personally for 5 years, it's the same as working in Malaysia for 15 years.

While Malaysia has improved significantly over the years, many still see Singapore as a place to "upgrade" their CVs, as it offers better global exposure, a faster pace, and higher standards.

As a result, our brain drain rate remains at 5.5% (cited by the Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources). The global average is 3.3%, which is not ideal for us.

With a stronger currency rate and a higher cost of living in SG, we expect the renunciation rate to slow.

But unlikely.

The ones who want to leave, or have left, will always go. It's more of pragmatism rather than patriotism itself. To them, it was about education systems, political stability and social security. These factors won't change a person's mindset overnight, especially when most parents back in the day told their kids to leave the country, sudah brainwashed kaw kaw.

Would you give yours up?

I would still go to SG and chiong SGD. It saves a significant amount of time while allowing you the freedom to pursue what you want earlier rather than later in life. Yet, home is still home. I wouldn't give it up. And as it is, the grass is already green where I'm standing.

Exactly four (4) years ago.

But I won't let him know.

What I had in mind then is totally different from what I'm doing now. Despite a couple of years, many things happened.

My past self won't see it coming either because the community wasn't anywhere near in sight. It was just the very beginning of my journey as an entrepreneur. I'm like that bread fresh out of the oven. Smells good, just waiting to be eaten away by harsh reality.

Yet, one thing stayed the same throughout the years. I have always been a people person.

Throughout my years in medical practice, I have always enjoyed 1-to-1 conversations. It was that safe space in the consultation room where one could pour out their thoughts and feelings. Subconsciously, we carry worries on our shoulders. Many of them, too.

And these worries have no outlet until someone helps you release them. Somehow, I was good at that. It could be a job hazard or an inherent skill set that I had, but I'll never know how it came about.

We spoke not about their current illness, but more about our lives, thoughts and purpose. People are generally happier. In fact, they felt lighter after the conversation. More than half of the recovery process comes from listening intentionally.

That probably led to where I am today. While I'm no longer practising within the healthcare system, I am still instinctively doing what I did best in my past years. The MKK community was the result of it. It's a safe space where people open up, an outlet to discharge their worries.

Of course, the four-years-ago-me didn't know about it.

I was stepping into the world of entrepreneurship, and all seemed new and shiny then. And I wouldn't let my pastself know either, because it was the journey that shaped me into who I am now.

Would you let your past self know what happens?

If I did, I would have second-guessed my choices.

Feed a family of 4 with a RM50 note.

As the day passes, it's less possible.

We close the kitchen on weekends to give Grace a break from cooking. But I have to agree with the Reddit user who posted about the Ringgit's shrinking power. Despite a stronger currency, inflation is hitting us hard.

It's almost impossible to spend less than RM50 on a meal at a mall for the four of us. Even if it means not ordering drinks and just drinking saliva, I find it challenging to cap it at RM50.

Used to be able to do it then, but definitely not now.

And if I want to cap it at RM50 for my family, it has to be outside the mall these days. Eat at the mamak for a simple meal or mixed rice at the kopitiam. Nasi kandar also cost me a bomb, surprisingly. Hawker stalls are within means for now, partly because there is no 10% service charge and 6% SST. If we add that in, it will exceed most of the time.

Our grocery runs for each week are about RM200.

That's only possible because we're small eaters. Soup, vegetable, a meat dish (usually two slabs of kai nin), steamed egg, and four bowls of rice are our standards. We hardly eat fish cos' mahal, beef pun ilek because equally as expensive, either ayam ke babi.

Looking at how things are, it can only get more expensive.

As it is, RM100 already feels like RM10.

How to cope like this?

While I understand that we need to korek more duit to sustain, money doesn't come easily either. Sib baik harga durian runtuh, otherwise I'll not be able to have durians anymore.

p/s. And yes, I eat durians with chopsticks.

I got GPT to check on Eric Siew.

And it doesn't know it's me.

Surprisingly, it knows me better than I know myself. While it doesn't have access to this platform, it can still scour the net for information on publicly accessible posts.

This year marks my 6th year on LinkedIn. Not long, but long enough to a certain level of readership here. Curious as usual, I had GPT run some research on the individual named Eric Siew (using the LI URL as a reference) without telling it that it was me on another account.

As you know, GPT is relatively biased when it knows it's you. It will "kipas" or lick your boots shiny until you go Cloud 9. I wanted it from a neutral perspective, so I stayed anonymous.

And, truth be told, the answers it gave about why my posts work well here, to a certain extent, were an eye-opener even for me.

If you're struggling with your LinkedIn post or crickets greet your post most of the time, consider using this method to check on creators to learn about their tricks. You may learn something new or two.

GDP growth exceeded at 4.9%.

But we feel as "tight" as ever, or worse.

Surprisingly, it's a common paradox in the economy. The macro numbers look great on paper, but at home, our makan table feels the opposite. We're careful with our spending, yet we can't breathe.

Reading headlines like these feels like a slap in the face. We can't live on pride alone, and here are the reasons why.

1. Sticky prices
For many of us, prices that matter most are food, utilities and housing. These often rise faster than the official rate. And once it's up, they rarely come down, even if the global rate falls.

That's because when things go up, worker salaries, shop rents, POS systems and supply chain contracts go up together. Even to reprint the restaurant menu costs money. So, everything stays high.

2. Wage lag
Our salaries cannot keep up with the rising costs, especially for middle-income earners. While there have been recent revisions to the minimum wage and salary hikes, private-sector wages often struggle to keep up.

3. Show us the money
GDP measures the total value of goods and services, but it doesn't show us who gets the money. In 2025, massive investments in data centres and semiconductors boosted the GDP. Services and manufacturing grew by 5.4% and 6.0% respectively. But if we're not in these industries, we won't feel it. When we open up our dompet, we see no money.

4. Household debt
Household debt refers to the loans we have on our house, car, or personal or credit cards. And according to Bank Negara Malaysia, our household debt-to-GDP ratio is 84.8%. This one we champion. We're already the highest in Southeast Asia, and 60% of the debt is from housing loans.

As a result, it takes a massive chunk out of our disposable income, hutang keliling pinggang. Then, these hidden costs that don't show up in the figures, like child care, healthcare and education, eat up our income more.

While the outlook for the country looks better in 2026, the economy will continue to squeeze middle-income earners until their juice is dry this year.

B40 will see a quality-of-life improvement through the STR and SARA, and T20's are resilient to these changes. But M40's, the M40's, we're the forgotten group and will have to continue to endure the pain.

And for us to get out of this "tightness", we're have to increase our disposable income in other ways than just taking up just one job. That is why the remaining 40% of us are also known as the "Side-Hustle Generation," as we cope with life's demands.
