I sat in an org meeting where AI was introduced to Jira and Confluence for one of our programs.

The use cases were limited:

→ Summarize a Confluence page
Then you copy and paste it wherever you need it. It doesn’t do anything with it.

→ Help format a Jira user story in SAFe structure
Brainstorm the Description 
Improve the Description 
Brainstorm Children Issues 


That’s it.


But here’s what stood out, the questions kept coming.

“Can it actually create the user story for me?”
“Can it pull information from an email and turn it into a ticket?”
“Can it read context from other tools and take action?”
“Can it help me make a decision, not just summarize what already exists?”
“When should I trust it? When should I challenge it?”

The gap was obvious.

People don’t just want AI in their tools.

They want AI that actually works, AI that reads, thinks, and acts across their workflow.

Not a summarizer.
Not a formatting assistant.
Not another tool to babysit.

Here’s the reality most orgs miss:

AI adoption doesn’t fail because people resist it. “They want AI”
Some fail because the use case is too shallow to earn trust and produce real value.

Trust forms when AI:

→ Helps with real decisions, not just text cleanup
→ Connects information across tools, not just within one
→ Is clear about what it can and can’t do
→ Saves time people actually feel

Otherwise? It gets abandoned.

That meeting showed me something important: The demand for AI is already there. The question is whether the tools are ready to meet it.

The prep. The event. The follow-through.

Draft features sent for approval, yes, the work starts that early.


➤ Pre-PI

Feature prioritization, backlog refinement, resource allocation, capacity planning, dependency mapping, budget alignment, OKRs and KPIs defined, making sure teams aren’t walking in blind. 
(And more I’m not listing.)


➤ During

Stakeholders in the room. Business context. Vision alignment.
Team breakouts. Draft plan reviews. Dependency mapping. Risk identification. Objectives locked. Milestones. Commitments.
(Still not everything.)

This PI we:
▪ Onboarded new teams to one of our ARTs
▪ Brought in a new cyber team forming
▪ Kicked off an AI/ML project - 
one that’s been in review for months through approvals, impact assessments, and budget alignment


➤ Post-PI

Baselines locked. Risks documented with owners. Dependencies tracked. Roadmap finalized. Budget tied to delivery. Retros.
(Not everything. You get the idea.)

It’s a lot of moving pieces. 
But the work before the work is what protects delivery.

This is what Agile project management looks like at scale:
Hybrid approach. Alignment. Clarity. Delivery protected before Sprinting.
