What happens when you don't have the luxury of failing forward?


No one ever said they enjoyed failing, and really meant it. 


Entrepreneurs speak of failing all the time 
Most talk about failing forward
They talk about the 16,000 lessons they learned,

Everyone applauds their resilience as they come out the otherside 

Because they failed forward. 

But what does that look like when you have experienced failure in a corporate job?

The consequences of failure can look like this in real life:

- Exiting a job before you have another one
- Getting fired
- Shouldering the blame publicly for a failed project
- Reputational damage
- Loss of a promotion

Resulting in 

- Loss of confidence
- Chronic indecision
- Being stuck
- Self-blame or shame
- Caught up in the loop of 'What if'

There are ALWAYS lessons to be learned from every failure,

A slight shift in circumstances could change the outcome

- Some people are failed by other people who could have stepped up but didn't, 
- Some people have more support 
- Whilst others have people willing to lay out a safety net.

Failures happen even when you did your best.

Failure in a corporate job is a moment in time. It should not be the thing that stops you from reaching your potential.

Getting over failure means learning how to move through this situation and come out the otherside with deeper wisdom about yourself.

But if I can offer this one piece of advice, don't let it keep you stuck.

If you've spent the last few years trying to be visible in your job and it's not working,

Visibility has never stopped a company from letting someone go...

Neither is visibility a measure of your self-worth over what you deliver to the organisation

What I can confidently say I have observed as the success factor for someone who moves up the organisation  is that they are likely to have quiet influence behind the scenes...

People seek their opinions, and they are talked about when decisions need to be made.

So rather than fighting for visibility for the sake of being seen

How does your job support the company's bottom line?


This is one of the most revealing questions I ask my clients....

Especially the ones who are incredibly busy, feel overwhelmed, and work so hard without getting rewarded for their results.

I was ALWAYS busy, running around doing unscheduled things

Always in back-to-back meetings --- AND taking the actions. 

I barely had time to think.

I learned some painful lessons because I never had time to network internally and strategise for a promotion. 

I watched others with less skill surpass me on a number of occasions until I started asking questions about the value of the work I was delivering for the organisation.

So if this is you...

Start with this question and be ruthlessly honest about what you spend your time on 

- Is this what you were brought in to do?
- Is this a company priority? 
- Or is it busy work that is nice-to-have but ultimately unimpactful to the organisation?

Prioritise the work that is recognised and, most importantly, rewarded by your organisation. 

I can promise you that when you get clear on what the organisation rewards, you will instantly halve the tasks and responsibilities you are currently undertaking.

This is the start of becoming less overburdened and more strategic.
