This country is punishing success.

But it rewards doing sod all.

Not in a moaning way.
In a "more people need to say this out loud" way.

It's very British to moan quietly, tut, feel a bit angry and then carry on regardless and let the carnage continue.

But as we are seeing, that means nothing changes.
Thankfully, more people are speaking out.
But not enough.

The last Govt were shockingly bad.

But this mob we've got in power are taking the biscuit in ineptitude and are repeatedly doing things that would have toppled Govts of the past but somehow, they ignore the outrage and carry on with the same disastrous decisions!

Starmer appointing Mandelson to ANY job should instantly lead to our beloved PM writing his resignation speech, if you ask me!

Aside from the endless u-turns and mismanagement of pretty much everything, the culture to penalise success and hard work and reward shirkers is so, so damaging.

It breeds a nation of people moaning about millionaires and billionaires constantly, instead of saying how can we become way more efficient, encourage and reward hard work at every level and incentivise more of it!

I've built businesses. 
Failed at some. 
Succeeded at others. 
Paid taxes. 
Created jobs. 
Took the risks many people won't.

And the message from this country right now to anyone who has done this...

You're suspicious. 
You've cheated somehow. 
You're a cash cow we can keep squeezing until there's nothing left.

Here's what really gets me though.

24 million people in this country are on some form of benefits right now.

24 M-I-L-L-I-O-N!!!

That's more than at any point since records began.

And welfare spending is heading towards £360 BILLION by 2028.

Meanwhile the conversation isn't "how do we get people off benefits and back into work."

It's "how do we tax the people who ARE working even more."

Wealth taxes. Inheritance taxes. Capital gains.

The message is crystal clear.

If you've built something. 
If you've created wealth. 
If you've taken the risk...

We're going to make sure you don't enjoy it.
We're going to squeeze you and your wallet to within an inch of your life.
Oh and when you die, we'll take even more!

I'm not talking about the genuinely vulnerable. 
Obviously.
We always must look after genuine people.

I'm talking about the culture.

The idea that success is something to be embarrassed about or penalised.

That if you've done well, you probably got lucky or screwed someone over.

We used to celebrate people who built things.
Now we treat them like they owe everyone an apology.

It makes me feel even more how we are in this cycle....

Hard times create strong men. 
Strong men create good times. 
Good times create weak men.

And weak men?

They create hard times.

We are firmly in that last bit.

I shut down my business during lockdown.

Not because someone forced me to.

Because I ran out of everything.

Energy. Ideas. 
The will to keep going.

I had a lead gen agency. Small team in the office. A few freelancers.

And then Covid hit and everything just... stopped.

Clients put campaigns on hold. 
Others wanted to slash budgets. 
The ones who stayed wanted more for less.

And I sat there one morning and thought...
"I've had enough of this."

Not in an angry way.
In a completely empty way.

Like someone had scooped out everything that was keeping me going and left nothing behind.

So I let the team go. Wound it down quietly. No drama. No big announcement.

Just... done.

I'd never felt more low in my life.
Genuinely.

Not just business low. Life low.

The kind of low where you sit in a room and wonder what the point of any of it actually is.

And for a while, I just sat with that.

But really, people want the truth.
Honesty.
The reality!

The bit before you had it figured out.
That’s what connects.

And that’s why founders can’t do this themselves.

They’re filtering out all the good stuff.
The human stuff.
The trust-building stuff.

They think “nobody wants to hear that.”

When actually… that’s the ONLY thing people want.

The best content comes from someone who can hear “we had a systems problem” and ask:

“Tell me about the moment you realised it was broken.”

That question unlocks everything.

But you can’t ask it of yourself.

You’re too busy trying to sound professional.

You’re pretending it’s all fruit salad.

When really, we know sometimes…

My dad started a print business in our garden shed in 1970.


There wasn't such a term as "side hustle" then...

But I guess that's what it was as he worked for a company during the day and built the business from scratch on evenings and weekends until he could go all in!

What began as that side hustle became a £multi million group of companies based in Watford.

At one point, Watford was the biggest print town in the UK and the second largest in Europe.

I was around it constantly.
I loved it!!

Before school, after school, weekends, holidays.
If something needed doing, I was doing it.

Cleaning. 
Floor sweeping. 
Packing boxes. 
Loading machines.
Drain unblocking.

Yes, that was as grim as it sounds!

But my Dad made sure I was put through my paces and showed I wasn't above doing anything!

I got that.

And wanted to prove my worth and not be the stereotype of the "son of the boss" who have known to be spoilt brats!!

I worked through every department.
Did all the hours I could!

Pre press. 
Print room. 
Finishing. 
Production. 
Estimating. 
Client services. 
Sales.

Eventually, I became MD.

After some years, I bought the business from my dad.

So when I say I understand what it is like to run a business, I mean it.

I have built teams. 
Signed cheques I was not sure I could cover. 
Spent £millions on machines.
Hired and fired.
Stayed awake wondering how we would deliver on something we promised.
Made the hard calls. 
Got it right sometimes. 
Got it wrong plenty.

Sales was not a side role.

It was central.

I never hid behind a desk.

I stayed hands on with clients because that is the heart of any business.

And honestly?

I loved it - still do!

Selling is just helping people make good decisions.

That is what I have always tried to do.

As a teen, I loved basketball and played on my high school team every day. 
 
I wanted to play guard, but my coach told me to play center because I'm tall. 
 
He didn't explain why I couldn't play guard, and I slowly started performing worse and worse because I felt I was not good enough. 
 
I had low self-esteem, felt anxious to attend training, and was no longer motivated to play. 
 
One day, I just quit the team and never came back. 
 
I have never ever played again since then. 
 
I deeply regret not speaking up then, but I learned a priceless lesson about leadership and communication. 
 
Great leaders aren't just bosses; they are listeners.

And... that's what my basketball coach didn't do.
He didn't ask for my opinion. 
 
Because of poor leadership, he allowed a motivated team player to gradually become unmotivated and then leave the team, never to play basketball again.

If you don't listen to your team about their ideas and problems, you won’t win many matches.

How to Design a Killer Agenda

AI is not the reason leadership feels so demanding.
AI is the light that shows us we are still trying to lead like 'Commanders of a rigid stone cathedral.'
