29 years ago, I debated whether I could afford to spend $50K on the domain name I really wanted for Netflix — replay.com.

I decided that was crazy money.

Netflix it was.

To hear now that they can afford to pay $70 billion for something is… pretty mind blowing.

HBO were the proprietary content pioneers. We always looked up to them.

Who woulda thunk.

The legend returns... and we helped make it happen.

Today, I’m thrilled to share that Gymkhana: Aussie Shred — the newest chapter in the legendary [HOONIGAN] / Subaru Motorsports USA film franchise — has dropped. We’re proud to have worked alongside the Hoonigan team, Subaru, and partners to manage global PR for this release, helping bring to life one of the wildest stunts ever committed to film.

For fans of car culture, Gymkhana isn’t just content. It changed the game. It wasn’t just about going fast or drifting — it was the first time showing the world that story-driven, high-octane automotive content could draw millions of views and build a global community.  

Back in 2008, when co-founders Ken Block and Brian Scotto dropped the original Gymkhana Practice — the same year I launched Kahn Media — no one knew it would become the “shot heard ’round the car-culture world.” That modest video turned into a multi-video juggernaut, with the core series alone surpassing 500 million views, and in the process rewrote how motorsports, marketing and storytelling intersect.  

Ken is gone — but his legacy lives on, and it’s bigger than ever. With “Aussie Shred,” we’re not just celebrating cars going sideways, upside down and airborne. We’re celebrating fearless creativity, community, and a cultural shift that started with a skateboard-film-style video about a guy and a Subaru.

Everyone is framing Paramount’s $77.9 billion hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery after the Netflix bid as a major moment for Hollywood. 

I think it is something different. It is the clearest sign yet that the traditional entertainment model has reached the point of no return.

Two companies fighting over the same legacy assets is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of contraction. When industries run out of growth, they consolidate.

The story behind this deal is simple. The distribution advantage studios relied on for 70 years is gone. Streaming commoditized it. AI is about to commoditize the content itself. Once both layers lose value, the only thing left is brand equity and whatever IP you can hold onto.

From a marketing and communications perspective, this is the part that matters.

Content is no longer the moat. Distribution is no longer the moat. The real moat is attention, trust and cultural footprint. 

Only a few companies have the scale to compete for those things globally, which is why everyone is now fighting over the same libraries and franchises.

This deal is not about growth. It is about survival.

Netflix wants to lock in cultural dominance before AI fractures the market further.

Paramount wants a lifeline before the floor drops out from under the old studio model.

The contrarian view is that none of this guarantees a win. Audiences do not care who owns HBO or DC. They care who tells the best stories and who earns their time. That is a marketing challenge, not a merger challenge.

So here is the real question:

Is this consolidation the beginning of a new power structure or just the last attempt to preserve an industry that hasn’t accepted how much its value has already shifted?

AI Isn’t Killing Marketing. It’s Killing Bad Marketing.

Everyone keeps asking if AI will replace agencies.

It won’t.

It will replace:
	•	Content mills
	•	Generic blog factories
	•	Surface-level SEO strategies
	•	Teams who think “posting more” equals “doing more”

AI has raised the bar.

Not lowered it.

The people winning right now are the ones who use AI to think deeper, not just faster.

The agencies winning right now are the ones who combine:
	•	Strategy
	•	Creative
	•	Story
	•	Authority
	•	AI as an amplifier

Not a shortcut.

AI didn’t kill marketing.
It killed mediocrity.

We are living a real shift in marketing right now. What used to feel safe is now burning time and budget, and if you are still running the old plays in 2025, you are fighting how people actually discover and trust brands today.

This year at Kahn Media, the clearest pattern we have seen across clients is that the “old internet” playbook is collapsing faster than most teams want to admit. 

Search is no longer just ten blue links and a blog calendar. LLMs and AI shopping assistants are becoming the first stop for answers and recommendations, which means content written to please search engines instead of real questions is quietly disappearing from the buyer journey. The market is already reorganizing around this, from brands optimizing for AI visibility to platforms building direct paths into AI-driven discovery.

What replaces the old playbook is not a shiny hack. It is authority people can verify and a voice that feels human. We are seeing brands win by trading keyword-first content for answer-first content, volume for depth, and “perfect” polish for recognizable personality. 

That same shift is killing spray-and-pray influencer bursts and generic PR blasts. Big reach without relevance is fading, while creators with real credibility inside specific communities are driving the outcomes that matter. 

And PR is moving away from mass distribution toward stories with stakes, opinions, and humans at the center, because that is what actually earns attention now.

If there’s one meta-lesson from 2025, it’s this: marketing that feels manufactured gets filtered out twice, once by algorithms and once by humans. The brands gaining ground are building verifiable authority, showing real personality, and using AI to speed up execution, not to sand off their voice. 

That is the playbook we are taking into 2026.
