and just like that, Pretty Little Marketer is a whole team of THREE 🤭✨‼️

I started PLM in june 2020 as a final year student with absolutely no intention of running a business - it was a little instagram page I made because I loved social media and couldn't find a job.

I resisted it becoming something more for a while - I freelanced until 2024, quietly growing PLM alongside it, figuring out what it could be, whether it was even *allowed* to be anything bigger.

then in 2024, I went all in.

left my clients, launched a membership, bet everything on this weird little community I'd been building for four years (that's you!)

and I did it all alone: every post, every email, every DM, every launch, every admin task, every event, every decision. 

until september last year, when Louisa joined as our Ops Manager (spoiler: she's brilliant) and I learned that asking for help wasn't failing - it was the smartest thing I could've done.

I want PLM to be great, not just good, not just "doing well for a one-woman show." 

I want it to be the best marketing community in the world (real talk it already is but we roll) and I cannot do that alone.

so this week, Tea joins our small but mighty team as our designer!

I've always created our content myself, with my very limited graphic design skills (shout out Adobe Express for making me look better than I am)

 and it's actually something I love doing, I'm not bad at it.

but after we rebranded last October, I knew PLM deserved more than what I could give it - the brand had grown up, and it needed someone who could take it further than I ever could on my own.

the biggest thing I've learned building this business is that growing doesn't always mean more followers or more revenue, sometimes it means letting go of the things you've been holding too tightly - and trusting someone else to make them better.

building a team hasn't made me less involved, it's made PLM more of what it was always supposed to be.

B2B marketing used to be the *most boring thing* on the planet, here's what I think has changed 👀🤫 AD

Air, a creative workspace where teams organise, find, edit and share all their content and assets, just sent their CEO to the most remote part of Iceland to film a product launch video. 

*actually* flew him out there to make cans of the "best air ever" for the launch of their new creative intelligence tools (AI that shows you how your content is performing, smart search that finds any asset in seconds, and AI-powered editing that turns one piece into several!)

we've all seen the takes: "Gen Z broke the marketing funnel", the old playbook is dead, content marketing is broken. cool, but what's actually working instead? 👀✨‼️ AD

here's 3 things I've changed in the last 6 months:

→ posting less, but only when I have something worth saying: I stopped asking "have I posted enough this week?" and started asking "does this build equity or just get engagement?" 

if another creator could post the same thing with a find-and-replace on the name, I'm not posting it.

→ optimising for reputation, not reach: I stopped checking impressions and started asking: would someone remember this in 3 days? would they screenshot it? tell a friend? 

reach is someone scrolling past your post, reputation is someone thinking of you when they need help.

→ treating my newsletter like my main channel: social is rented land, my newsletter has a 50% open rate, drives more community sign-ups than LinkedIn, and the replies are unmatched. 

owned audience > borrowed reach, every time.

but I still don't think any of us have fully figured out what replaces the old funnel yet - so I'm doing some learning.

he's covering why the old funnel stopped working, how to meet your audience where they actually are, and how to build campaigns that get smarter over time instead of just churning out more content and hoping for the best.

Most of the time I just want to watch reality crap tv with no distractions. 

Just finishing up our 3rd location for this hotel now 😎

It is not embarrassing to ask a client for work. 

Hear me out. 

For a long time I thought If we did a great job, they would just call us again.

Quite a lot of the time they do.

Most of the time they’re just busy.

Clients have hundreds of suppliers, projects and emails going on at once

Not hearing from them doesn’t mean they weren’t happy it usually just means you’ve dropped off their radar. 

I stopped taking it personally 😆

Following up isn’t being pushy

It’s being professional.

I just drop a quick message like

“Hi, just checking in if you have any upcoming sites we’d be happy to cost on?”

Quite often than not they actually say “oh yes actually”

This has brought us more repeat work than loads of other marketing reaches.

You’re not asking for a favour

You’re reminding someone you solved a problem for them before.

Good businesses don’t wait to be remembered

They make it easy to be chosen.

Since I got comfortable with that, repeat work increased and relationships got stronger.

If you run a business and you’re hesitating to send that message send it.  ☺️

Don’t ever buy these with the thought of only eating two.

We’ve just completed a sample room on a project and it has got the nod for the remaining rooms.

Sample rooms aren’t really about winning the job for us. (Of course that is nice ha)

They’re about getting the job right. 😍

On pictures and email exchanges most things work. 

On site is when you see the real deal. 

Lighting changes colours

Edges could behave differently

Timings might be longer or shorter. 

The grain direction of the vinyl could affect things. 

More damage than anticipated.

We could have agreed not to wrap the backs of the doors but now the client wants that etc.

A sample room lets everyone see the finish in real conditions and be able to look at the logistically going forward. 

We set this expectation 

It gives the client confidence

It also lets us refine the installation, solve problems that we didn’t see prior and give confidence to the client. 

We’d actually be more worried about a large scale project that didn’t have one. 

It’s not about proving ourselves.

It’s about respecting the scale of the project and making sure what gets rolled out is the best possible version of it.

The projects that run the smoothest almost always start this way.

We want to level up but everything still runs through us

Nothing is wrong but there is more projects and more moving parts.

I am also a bit of a control freak so honestly the thought of hiring an Ops manager freaks me!

It is growing but only as fast as I can keep up.

Do you think hiring an ops type role would be a good move?

p.s I tried a virtual assistant twice but it wasn't for us, we felt it was to much of a reactive business, it just didn't fit right.

Is that the best way to do this?
