"You are a hypocrite."
Well, I kind of am... Yes. 🤥
But I have a £200k rule...

I give people advice that I don't follow myself.

On LinkedIn it's best to focus on...
→ One audience
→ One message
→ One offer

But I talk to salespeople, business owners, and marketers...and sell multiple things. Here's why...

Back when I started in 2014, I only spoke to one group.... solopreneurs.

That's where I got traction.
Talking to one group.

0 → 50k followers
£0 to £500k annual revenue
0 → 10 full-time staff

Then I widened my net because...
→ I had a brand.
→ I had a pipeline.
→ I had a bigger team.
→ I had more resources.
→ I had confidence that it worked.

If I had gone for 3 audiences starting out, it would added more friction, more confusion, it would take longer to build trust...

...and more time figuring out what works.

It doesn't matter if you are sales, marketing or your own the business...

You'll convert one audience faster than you'll ever convert three.

Make your first £200k in sales / 20 clients here before you expand out and offer more stuff / sell to more audiences.

Then you can be a hypocrite too. 😉

“You named your dog after your business?”
Most people think that. 🐕
But there is more interesting story.

But by sheer chance Maverick came along in 2020.

Nobody buys that. 😬
Why clever people get NO SALES.


I was chatting with a CEO of a company that looks after other companies IT.
They waffled on for a few minutes about what they do.
Acronyms were dropped.

Then I asked....
❓️Why do they need you?
I got the vaguest answer back.

Then I asked...
❓️Why should they change to you?
Another vague answer.


Sometimes we get really good at the wrong thing.
Instead of nerding out on WHAT you do.
Nerd out on WHY people need you.

They relied for years on word of mouth.
That wasn't bringing as much as it used to.
That exposed a GAP.

They'd never had to sell in an open market.


If you're in the same boat.
You will find selling hard.
Like an uphill struggle.

This is not limited to IT - it happens in every industry.


Do this instead:

Write down 5 persistent problems clients might have because they haven't hired you yet...

1 ____________________________________
2 ____________________________________
3 ____________________________________
4 ____________________________________
5 ____________________________________

Make them your message in your marketing.

Flip from "this is what we do" to "the are the problems we solve"


Now you have a message that resonates.

Something is VERY wrong 📨
Here's my checklist for better DMs.

Adapt your messages using these 6 tips...

1. Opening (Hook)
Am I starting with a question or observation that makes them think?
Did I cut out any “hope you’re well” or generic filler?
Would this first line make me stop and read?

2. Problem (Make it Real)
Is the problem specific and relatable (not vague)?
Can they see themselves in the scenario I described?
Did I use concrete language?

3. Tone (Collaborative)
Am I talking with them or at them?
Does this sound like a conversation I’d have over coffee?
Did I strip out any lecturing, over-explaining, or buzzwords?

4. Offer (Outcome-Driven)
Can they clearly picture what they’ll walk away with?
Did I highlight quick wins or a fast result?
Is it unique enough to stand out?

5. Call to Action (CTA)
Does my CTA feel like the natural next step in the conversation?
Did I add urgency or a reason to act now?
Did I tie the CTA to the benefit?

6. Brevity (Trim the Fat)
Can I cut 20% of the words without losing meaning?
Would this make sense if I said it out loud?
Does it fit easily into a LinkedIn DM without feeling like an essay?

Golden Rule: 

If it feels like marketing copy, rewrite it until it feels like a conversation.

80% of posts I see do this.
This LinkedIn mistake costs you clients 💰
You'll get ZILCH until you fix it.

When you help people solve many problems, you categorise.

You bundle them up into a category.

You'll say things like: 
→ "My clients lack clarity"
→ "They struggle with mindset"
→ "They need a better strategy"


These aren't problems.
They're filing cabinets.

Clarity is not a problem.
It is a category of problems.


Here's why you do it:

You're afraid.
That talking about one specific problem will miss the other people who have a different version of it.

You pick a word that covers everything.
But that won't resonate with anyone.


Nobody wakes up thinking "I lack clarity."

They think....
"3 months and still no sign of X"

That's a problem. 
Something they see.


Here's a simple test:
What would your client Google at 11pm?

That's the language to use.
That's the level of specific.

If they wouldn't Google it, don't post it.

It’s time to do an intro again. 👋
6 things you won’t know about me.

#1 - At 17 I started a business, it failed because I didn’t get enough business. Today, I have a rule - ABM - Always be marketing - so you never run dry of leads.

#2 - Started MAVERRIK in 2014, but shifted to social selling and LinkedIn fully in 2018. Now trained over 200k people.

#3 - Before this, I had a $2.5m monthly revenue target for a large media company I worked for. I got that because of #5.

#4 - Massive Star Trek fan - I don’t dress up or have Mr Spock ears - but love the optimism, exploration of space and sci-fi space battles.

#5 - My first big break in social media was in 2012, I got a project to market an event at Wembley - I sold 38,640 tickets organically.

#6 - My day job is working with companies and people to get more from social selling - not impressions - leads, clients and conversations.

Why did I do this post?

The important point.

Social Selling is about building trust and relationships.
One way you can do that is sharing content.

I caution people about banking on posting for their primary source of leads…

But, content, even simple posts like this, can help people get to know you better.

Don’t think you need to go insight heavy all the time.

People buy from people they know, they like and they trust.

If you follow the tactics and tips.
Don't be surprised when you hit a wall. 🧱
This is how to really win at LinkedIn


I've been doing social selling for 14 years.
→ I've seen creators come and go.
→ I've seen gurus rise and fall.
→ I've seen people thrive and fail.

Why?
→ They play tactical games.
→ They build on sand.
→ They build on tactics.

Tactics will only get you so far...then you run out of road.

Your issue with pipeline and client wins is NOT from a lack of tips and tricks. There is no secret you've not found. There is no magic hack where everything works.


Here is what most problems mean:

❌ No leads from posts or DMs.
You have a message problem.
What you are saying isn't landing.
✅ Talk to specific problems people have.

❌ You get leads but they don't convert.
You don't know how to run a sales call.
You're blabbing about what you do.
✅ You need to learn discovery.

❌ LinkedIn has got you nothing.
You've been reliant on referrals.
You're not used to selling into open market.
✅ Your value prop is fuzzy, needs fixing.

❌ Getting engagement but wrong people.
You're pandering to a broad audience.
Your resonating for the WRONG reasons.
✅ Speak only to your target market.

❌ LinkedIn takes too much time
You have a bad process.
You're unfocused and not strategic.
✅ You need a repeatable process to get clients.


If your ideal clients...
→ Don't engage.
→ Don't enquire.
→ Don't convert.
That is 100% a business problem.


You don't need to go viral to get leads.
You don't need to send 200 DMs a day to get clients.


The people who win on LinkedIn:
→ Have a tight value prop.
→ Have a clear message.
→ Have a system they follow.

Why?

Because everyone needs to sell stuff.
Despite all the tools and tech.
You still got to connect to a human.
You got to show them WHY is matters.

Feels like for a few years there we forgot that... feels like the world is realising transactional doesn't work.

What's the best time to post?
This is the top question I get asked ❓
There's 3 answers....

Is there are a golden hour for posting?
Nope!

LinkedIn posts now last much longer.
It used to be 24 hours, now, more like 3 weeks.

So, if you are looking for a secret time for more engagement... There isn't one.

I give these tips to people who come to my workshops...


1️⃣ -The consistent time.
It's best to pick a time you can stick to.
I can't do 11am, I'm too busy.
I do 8:15am daily.
Because I know I can do it.

2️⃣- When you can be present
Replying to early engagement matters.
So choose a time you can loiter
Then respond to comments.

3️⃣ - When your audience shows up
Run this test.
Track the timing of 1st engagements.
Then post around this time.


If you want to make content part of your social selling and client acquisition plan, it needs to be sustainable. 

So, the best time is the time that you can stick to.

Some final advice on this...
Cap your time creating - 10-mins max.
More time doesn't make better posts.

It's more important to resonate with your target audience than optimise for timing. 

Resonating trumps every algorithm
