We have a deep respect for our fellow business founders because we were founders ourselves.

We know just how much time, hard work, and struggle goes into building a company that customers love and keep coming back to.

Having invested in companies, sold companies and raised funding, we have seen the costs of the short-term mindset of private equity and venture capital up close. We wanted to do something fundamentally different.

Following the inspiration of Berkshire Hathaway, we decided to build the company that we would want to buy the companies we started.

This mindset shift changed my life…

(it's called The Starfish Rule):

An old man was walking along the beach when he noticed a young boy picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, "Excuse me, but what are you doing?"

The boy replied, "The sun is rising and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw the starfish back in, they’ll die.”

The old man shook his head and said, "But there's too many starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly make a difference.”

After thinking for a moment, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean.

Then, he turned to the old man and said, "Well, I made a difference to that one."

It's easy to adopt a negative mindset in the face of a seemingly enormous challenge. You're trying to transform your life, but it's impossible to see how the tiny actions today will ever create the change you seek.

In those moments, remember the little boy from the story:

Bend down, pick up a single starfish, and throw it back into the ocean.

You won't change your life in a day, but if you change your days, you'll eventually change your life.

The Starfish Rule

The hardest lesson I learned about success…

(it came from a farmer):

A farmer doesn't dig up his seeds every day to make sure they're growing.

He plants, waters, and waits. You can't rush what needs time to take root. Growth hides beneath the surface long before it's visible above it.

Remember that.

This idea completely changed my life…

(it's called The Stone Cutter Principle):

A traveler approached three stonecutters working on a construction site and asked each of them what they were doing.

The first stonecutter said, "I am cutting stone." 

The second stonecutter replied, "I am building a wall."
 
But the third stonecutter smiled proudly, "I am building a cathedral."
 
Same work. Different story.

This is important: The story you tell yourself about your daily actions has the power to dramatically shape the reality you experience.

The first stonecutter sees monotony. The second sees contribution. The third sees purpose.

The task doesn't change, but the meaning does.

And as we all know, a strong sense of meaning creates a different level of energy, focus, and intensity in the pursuit.

I like to call this the Stonecutter Principle:

How you choose to perceive the process determines the quality of your outcomes.

But it's easier said than done…

Most of life is lived in the daily grind. The small, repetitive, sometimes frustrating tasks that make up the process. When you're trudging forward, it can feel like the work on any given day doesn't matter.

And yet, the hard days are where perspective becomes most powerful. This is where the story can change everything.

Simply because so few people are able to connect the small to the big.

That's the Stonecutter Principle in action: Connecting daily effort to the grand vision.

You won't always enjoy every task in front of you. Some days will feel dull, heavy, or thankless. But you always have the power to choose the story you tell about that work.

You can see yourself cutting stone—or building a cathedral.

You can see yourself cleaning the floor—or helping put a man on the moon.

And when you choose the bigger story, you don't just elevate yourself, but everyone around you. That vision is contagious. Your energy creates energy. Your agency creates agency.

So the next time you find yourself caught in the grind, pause and ask:

What am I really building here?

Because the story you choose is the life you live.

The Stone Cutter Principle

I made a list of things I know I'd regret on my deathbed.

Everyone should do this:

To conduct your own, simply ask yourself these questions:

What are the things you know you'd regret on your deathbed?

If you continue on your current path, will you have those regrets?

If so, what changes need to be made to avoid them?

How can you design your life to avoid those regrets?

I recommend doing the exercise by yourself, but then coming together with a group of loved ones to discuss and reflect on your learnings.

Death Bed Regrets

The most liberating truth no one tells you:

Nobody cares.

When you’re winning, nobody cares. When you’re losing, nobody cares. 

It doesn’t mean nobody loves you, it just means nobody cares about your life as much as you do. It just means that you are in control. It’s on you. 

Nobody cares. Go do it.

The 10 most common logical fallacies of life…

(most people use these without even knowing it):

Ad Hominem - Attack the person.
Attempt to discredit the messenger so you don't have to face the message. An all-too-common "strategy" in political discourse.

The Straw Man - Distort to destroy.
The person distorts your argument into a weaker version so they can easily tear it down. A classic move for anyone more interested in winning than understanding.

False Dilemma - You only have two choices.
They present two extreme options as if they're the only possibilities. Reality is almost always in some shade of grey.

Appeal to Authority - Trust me, they said so.
Using an expert's opinion as proof, without any supporting evidence. People often hide behind credentials when logic runs out.

Bandwagon Fallacy - Everyone's doing it.
Assuming something is true simply because everyone believes it. The herd may be loudest right before walking off the cliff.

Sunk Cost Fallacy - Can't quit now.
Continuing simply because of what has already been invested. Smart people cut losses when they no longer make sense. Fools double down to avoid accepting the loss.

Red Herring - Hey, look over there!
A distraction masquerading as relevant. Someone shifts the topic to something tangential to avoid addressing the issue at hand. A masterclass in misdirection.

Tu Quoque - "And you too."
Instead of addressing a criticism, the person points out your flaws to avoid accountability. Alleged hypocrisy doesn't invalidate truth.

Hasty Generalization - Small sample, big claim.
Drawing sweeping conclusions from very limited evidence. Anecdotes are not data. One case does not make a real pattern.

The Fallacy Fallacy - Bad argument ≠ bad idea.
Assuming a claim is false simply because it was argued poorly. Don't confuse a poor advocate with a poor idea.

The next time you find yourself pulled into an argument, remember these logical fallacies. Use them to distinguish between those engaging in good faith and those who just want to wrestle you in the mud.
