I gave up alcohol six years ago. 

It was a conscious choice.

Not because I hit rock bottom or had a dramatic story to tell. 

I was tired of missing my morning workouts, feeling groggy all day, and pretending alcohol wasn’t affecting me.

I was married to an alcoholic for 20 years. I lived inside the damage it can do to health, relationships, finances, and safety. That experience shaped my perspective. But it didn’t stop me from social drinking. I had to make that choice for myself.

What I didn’t expect was how easy it felt once I cut it out completely.

Here’s what I understand now that I didn’t then.

Alcohol messes with your stress hormones. It disrupts how your body processes estrogen. And when you’re already in midlife, navigating shifting hormones, adding alcohol into the mix is like trying to steady a boat while someone keeps rocking it from the other side.

The data is also clearer now. Even one drink a day increases breast cancer risk. 

That’s not me being alarmist. That’s research.

We don’t need fear or cheerleading. We need truth and transparency so we can make our own informed decisions.

Going alcohol-free has been one of the most important choices I’ve made for my health. Not because I had to. 

Because I could.

What if the most radical thing you could do this January is nothing at all?

Here’s how the cycle works.

From October through December, the marketing machine tells you to indulge. Eat more. Drink more. Buy more. Celebrate harder. You deserve it.

Then, in January, those same industries pivot. Now they want to sell you the fix. 

[ ] The detox. 
[ ] The diet. 
[ ] The gym membership. 
[ ] The supplement stack. 
[ ] The reset.

You didn’t fail. You were set up.

And here’s what nobody talks about: nature doesn’t do New Year’s resolutions.

January isn’t about pushing harder. Look outside. The trees are bare. The ground is resting. Animals conserve energy. The earth is in a season of stillness before the next cycle of growth.

But we’ve been taught to sprint into the new year as we owe it something.

I used to live that way. Three Christmas trees, dinner for thirty. Every dish from scratch. I told myself that doing more meant I was doing it right. 

What I was really doing was running from how I actually felt.

When my life cracked open, I finally asked a different question. What if I did less on purpose?

That shift changed everything. Not just my holidays. 

My mornings. 
My health. 
My hormones. 
My ability to actually hear what my body was asking for.

This January, I’m not making resolutions. I’m protecting my rest. I’m stacking what works instead of chasing what’s trending.

If you’re feeling pressure to fix yourself this month, maybe the real experiment is doing nothing dramatic at all. Just noticing, listening, and letting January be what it actually is.

A season of stillness before the growth.

I tried everything. 

Nothing was working.

I was listening to a podcast a while back where Kevin O’Leary said people like Elon Musk and Steve Jobs have this ability to focus solely on the signal and tune out all the noise.

And I remember thinking, that’s exactly what I couldn’t do.

The noise was everywhere. One expert said women should cold plunge. The next one said absolutely not. Add creatine. Eat 140 grams of protein. 

I was putting protein powder in my matcha every morning and honestly, I was gagging trying to get it down. 

I carried around those little pill organizers packed with 30 supplements a day. I spent thousands on functional medicine appointments that left me with more rules and zero results.

Six months in, I hadn’t lost a pound, still waking up at 3 AM, and the brain fog hadn’t lifted. 

I felt like I was doing everything right while my body just ignored me.

So I stopped listening to everyone else and started paying attention to me.

Morning walks at sunrise with my dog. Learning how to move in and out of ketosis. Supporting my ECS system.

The noise wants you to believe the answer is more. 

But what if you need to stop long enough to hear what's already there?

Red light therapy is free.

It happens every morning at sunrise. 

Red light is not expensive panels at wellness centers. The sun delivers it for free, every single day, in those first 10 to 15 minutes after it rises.

That pink and orange glow at dawn? That’s red and near-infrared light. It penetrates your skin, reaches your cells, and energizes your mitochondria. The tiny powerhouses in every cell that produce your energy.

Here’s what started shifting when I committed to never missing a sunrise:

Better sleep. Morning red light triggers a countdown that signals your body to produce melatonin later that night.

Steadier mood. Morning light exposure helps regulate neurotransmitters that affect how you feel throughout the day.

I bundle up now. Heated gloves, puffy coat, beanie, the whole thing with Kula, and I walk three miles before the world gets loud. 

Get outside within 30 minutes of sunrise. Even 10 minutes counts. Skip the sunglasses. Track how you sleep and how you feel when you wake up. 

It costs nothing. It takes minutes. And it changes everything.
