Stanford Just Killed Prompt Engineering With 8 Words (And I Can’t Believe It Worked)

I recently asked ChatGPT to tell me a joke about coffee five times.

I got the exact same joke five times.

“Why did the coffee file a police report? It got mugged!”


I changed the temperature.
I rewrote the prompt. Nothing worked.

I assumed we had hit the ceiling of AI creativity. I was wrong.


A new paper from Stanford, Northeastern, and WVU just revealed that we’ve been asking the wrong question.

The Problem: It’s not the AI, it’s us.

We thought making AI "safe" (via RLHF) made it boring.

It turns out, the issue lies with the human raters.


When humans rate AI outputs, we are biased. We systematically prefer the "typical" and "familiar" answers. We trained the models to believe that the most average, predictable response is the "best" one.


This causes Mode Collapse:
The creativity is still there, it’s just buried under layers of people-pleasing training.


The Fix: Verbalized Sampling:
To unlock the creativity, you need to stop asking for the "best" answer.

Instead of asking: “Tell me a joke about coffee.”

Ask this: “Generate 5 jokes about coffee with their probabilities.”

When I tried this, the "mugged" joke disappeared. The model stopped trying to please the human preference layer and dug into the raw data distribution.

The result?
The 5th joke was: *“What do you call a cow who’s just given birth? De-calf-inated!”* (Actually funny).

Why this matters:
The researchers found that on creative tasks, this technique increased diversity by **~200%**.

We spent two years thinking the "alignment tax" was permanent. We thought we had to choose between safety and creativity.

We didn't. We just needed to ask the model to show us the math.

I recently found a workflow that turns any boring document into an engaging, two-person podcast instantly.

And no, this isn’t "text-to-speech." That sounds robotic and boring.

This is something entirely different.

Here is the exact workflow to listen to your work:

1. The Tool
Head over to Google NotebookLM. It is an experimental project from Google Labs, and currently, it is completely free.

2. The Input
Create a new notebook and upload your sources. You can drop in:
- Quarterly financial reports
- Dense academic papers
- Legal contracts
- Google Slides

3. The Magic
Once your sources are loaded, click the "Generate Audio Overview" button. Go grab a coffee while it processes (it takes about 3 minutes).

4. The Result
This is the part that will blow your mind.

The tool generates a deep-dive conversation between two AI hosts.
- They banter with each other.
- They make jokes.
- They use simple metaphors to explain complex technical concepts.
- They interrupt each other naturally.

It sounds scary real.

I listened to a technical manual on my drive home yesterday. I learned more in 15 minutes of listening than I would have in 2 hours of struggling through the text.
