"The market is just terrible right now."

I hear this every single week from product managers.

And I get it. It IS harder.

But here's what I've learned from coaching 1,000+ PMs:

The market is never the primary reason someone can't land a great role.

Right now — in this market — my clients are landing at Google, Meta, Amazon, Stripe, and Coinbase. Some have multiple offers. Some negotiating $100K+ increases.

Same market as you. Different strategy.

When you say "the market is terrible," what you're actually saying is: "My current approach isn't working in this market."

That's actually good news. Because you can't change the weather. But you can change what you're wearing.

The PMs who win in tough markets ask different questions:

"How do I position myself as the obvious choice?" — not "Why won't anyone hire me?" 
"How do I access opportunities with less competition?" — not "Why aren't my applications converting?" "
What are the people succeeding doing differently?" — not "Why is this so hard?"

These aren't reframes. They lead to completely different actions.

The market is the weather. Your strategy is your clothing.

Dress for the storm.

I wasn’t always seen as a good PM.
Even when I delivered results, I was overlooked.
Underestimated.
Told I wasn’t cut out for the role.

It shook my confidence, quietly on the outside but deeply on the inside.

But I knew their comments didn't define me.

Over time, I stopped chasing external validation and started trusting the way *I* lead best.

Fast forward:

* I managed teams as large as 9 PMs, and managed people managers
* I built products used by hundreds of millions
* I presented alongside Mark Zuckerberg
* I was awarded Additional Equity 3 years in a row and grew my comp from ~$300k to ~$900k in 6 years
* And I retired (FIRE'd) from Big Tech at 40

But I never forgot what it felt like to over-prepare because deep down, I **still** didn’t think I belonged.

That’s why I now coach L6-L9 leaders who are ready to lead differently.

Not louder. Not flashier.

Just with more trust in themselves.

I don’t know this VP personally, so reading this message really surprised me!

When I started this work, my goal wasn’t to reach as many people as I can.

It was to reach the right people as I Barista FIRE, who'd resonate with my spicy perspective as my approach is a different take on the traditional way.

Can AI replace your product sense? (Spoiler: not yet)

I tested AI on a product sense question "build a product to help people enjoy art." It gave me all the “right” answers, like mission, segments, and it used a prioritization framework to prioritize “enthusiasts” over “casual users."

Even though it sounds structured on the surface, it actually lacks the deep, nuanced understanding and human-like intuition required for truly effective product decisions 

It doesn't think deeply about what people believe, their value systems.

It does not understand the personal, emotional connections or the effort involved in creation that make art enjoyable for humans.

These human-centric insights are crucial for identifying the most relevant problems in product design but are often beyond AI's current capabilities. 

AI can simulate product sense, but it can’t feel what actually matters, meaning, emotional connection, what truly moves the needle for users. 

Your job as a leader is to lead the tool, not be “tooled” by it, and know when to use AI and when its output is merely a simulation that needs human refinement and taste

I think we should reframe the question "will AI take my job?" to "what kind of person will always have a place in a world shaped by AI?"

It has to be the opposite from all the doing because AI can do that.

It’s a way of being human!

AI can learn the right tools, master the right frameworks faster than humans.

So what does that leave for us? The things AI genuinely cannot replicate.

The ability to solve problems that have never been solved before, therefore AI hasn't been trained on it yet.

The messy, ambiguous, first-of-its-kind challenges that require human judgment.

- Genuine trustworthiness, the kind you feel in someone's presence. The kind that makes a team follow you into uncertainty without needing a slide deck.

- A real desire to help others, not just for show, but authentically in small moments and big ones. The ability to notice when someone is struggling and help them move through it.

- The capacity to keep learning not because you are afraid to be replaced, but because you're genuinely curious.

- Critical thinking sharp enough to question what AI tells you, because AI can sound authoritative and still be wrong.

None of these can be done for you by AI.

But they will definitely show up in how you handle ambiguity and in how people feel after talking to you.

This is the work we do with our clients: focus on not just their answers but the authentic person behind the stories.

The most meaningful part of interview prep isn't the answers, it's who you become while finding them.

What's something this process has revealed about you that you didn't expect?
