That’s all it takes sometimes. One person seeing you when no one else does.

I was sitting in a crowded lab waiting room this morning when the phlebotomist stepped out and said, 

“My coworker called out sick. It’s just me today.”

You could feel the shift of energy in the room.

People sighed, and a few curse words were uttered.

When she finally called my name, I could see the strain on her face.

She was still calm, but you could tell it was costing her.

As she prepped my arm, I said,

“I’m so sorry you’re on your own today. Thanks for letting us know about the delay.”

I saw her face soften a bit, and I could tell my words were what she needed to hear at that moment.

Afterward, she smiled and said,

“There’s a survey coming your way. Would you mind picking the biggest smiley face for me?”

I laughed. “I’ll have to draw an even BIGGER one.”

Driving home, I thought about how quickly we forget that calm is contagious.

When you meet someone’s stress with empathy instead of irritation, you’re not just helping them regulate.

You’re helping yourself too.

We talk about nervous system regulation like it’s a solo practice, but it’s actually a community act.

Kindness is co-regulation, and it ripples farther than you think.

When my mom asked "Are you sick?" at my apartment door in 1998, I wasn't ill.

I just wasn't wearing makeup.

That single comment shaped how I see myself today.

So much so that I rarely leave the house without at least a little makeup.

And in every photo you see of me here? Yep, makeup.

It's wild how these small moments can define us.

I think that for most women, makeup is about feeling presentable and acceptable to the world.

But what would it look like to show up exactly as we are?

To not apologize for bare faces, messy hair, or tired eyes?

We've been conditioned to believe our natural selves aren't enough.

That we need enhancement to be worthy of public spaces.

When you’ve tried everything and you’re still awake at 3 AM wondering what’s wrong with you…

Dorothy’s story will give you hope.

Four years ago, she went through an intense period of insomnia that forced her to take a leave from her job as a nurse.

The insomnia eventually resolved, but it returned this fall.

She didn’t want her family life disrupted or to pause work again so she hired me.

Her goals were to: 
• Loosen the anxiety that gripped her at bedtime 
• Avoid turning to anti-anxiety medication when sleep felt hard 
• Feel confident that her body could sleep naturally again

Five weeks later, after applying what she learned in our sessions, her Insomnia Severity Index score dropped from 24 (severe insomnia) to 2 (no clinically significant insomnia).

Her hormonal changes from perimenopause hadn’t disappeared, but her anxiety around sleep had.

Most nights now, she sleeps soundly.

And if she has an off night, she knows exactly why and resets without spiraling.

What made the biggest difference?
 
↳ Mindset shifts: Staying calm before bed instead of catastrophizing when sleep didn’t come instantly. 
↳ Building strong sleep drive: Going to bed only when genuinely sleepy. 
↳ Consistent wind-down routine: Creating a relaxing buffer before bed and avoiding stimulation. 
↳ Morning light exposure: Getting morning light whenever possible (even after the fall clock change) to anchor her circadian rhythm.

At a recent mini high school reunion, someone brought an old senior-year newspaper with “predictions.” Mine: “Morgan Adams will go off her diet.”

When my former classmates read it aloud, I didn’t miss a beat.

“YESSS! No more diets… woo hoo!”

It reminded me how much dieting had been my identity.

I was good at it. Too good, actually.

What most people never knew was that willpower only carried me so far.

When it gave out, I secretly binged.

That cycle lasted into my mid-30s.

Back then, the only help I found was self-help books (read them all) and a few psychologists (mostly unhelpful).

What finally clicked was that my bingeing was often triggered by silencing myself.

I was stuffing emotions with food.

When I started using my voice, the diet/binge cycle started to unravel.

I’m grateful I healed my relationship with food, but wish it hadn’t taken 35 years to find a sense of peace.

It's the "Candlelight Concert", an entertainment movement that's sprung up in over 100 cities.

Last night I went to my fourth one, and this one had a Fleetwood Mac theme.

Think Fleetwood Mac classics, played by a string quartet… surrounded by hundreds of flickering candles.🕯️

The sleep-nerd cherries on top are that:
1️⃣ the entire stage was lit only by candlelight to promote melatonin release
2️⃣ the show started at 6:30 p.m, which meant I was home and in my PJs by 8:00.

I highly recommend Candlelight Concerts to anyone who wants evening entertainment that won’t mess with their circadian rhythm.

He made it clear he didn’t think I belonged.

It happened two years ago, and it still stings a little.

I flew to an Ivy League school to learn from one of the top insomnia experts in the country.

The room was filled with doctors, therapists, psychologists, and nurse practitioners. 

When it was my turn to introduce myself, I said, “I’m a sleep coach.”

The instructor smirked and said, “Go Eagles.”

In other words: You’re not one of us.

It landed harder than I expected, but I stayed.

Because people are suffering, and the system is failing them.

Over 30 million Americans have chronic insomnia.

Fewer than 700 clinicians in the entire country are trained in the gold-standard treatment, CBT-I.

That math doesn’t work.

So I pulled up my own chair.

I trained in CBT-I so women didn’t have to wait months for help.

So they could get more than a quick recommendation… they could get real support through real change.

Like my former client Karen, who told me:
“Working with you was ten times more valuable than any doctor visit I had during my insomnia crisis.”

This is the space I fill.

Not just information, but transformation.

Not just “try this”, but actual guidance when things feel hard.
