If I let every challenge get the better of me, where would I be?

I dread to think.
 
I am 8 days into a new city that is meant to be our new home.  From the outside looking in, it looks perfect.
 
Well connected
Pretty
A river
Nice shops
Clean
Thirty minutes into London.
Capital of Essex.
 
What else could you want?
 
I have moved a lot in my life.  
Stockholm > Islamabad > Rawalpindi > Edinburgh > London and within those cities, I have probably moved house at least 30 times.
 
This move has been the hardest, only because I underestimated it. 
 
Ironically, it should have been the easiest. We paid for comfort with full packing, full moving service .
 
Yet the setbacks have been relentless.
 
No phone reception in the house - That’s how I planned to hold my coaching calls.  Missed the bus that comes twice an hour.  A puncture on my bike.  A puncture on my son’s bike.  Late to school on day one and day two.  The toilet flush stopped working.  The stove stopped working.  The heating turns itself on in the middle of the night.  And apparently kids don’t ride free on buses here. In London it’s free until 11.  I accidentally didn’t pay for my son on the first three journeys...oops.
 
None of this is catastrophic.  But when it piles up, it starts feeling heavy.
 
I judged myself for finding it hard. From the outside, this does not look like a hard situation, and yet it is. 
 
While I still feel low, which I can also attribute to my time of the month, I am taking active steps to stabilise myself.
 
The dominant feeling has been displacement. I don’t feel like I belong anywhere?  So I tackled that directly.
 
I joined an online community with strong UK roots. I already knew Lea 🌈 Turner  , so joining The HoLT felt like a grounded choice. She has been generous, supportive, and has already connected me to people in Essex. An in-person meetup is booked - Yay!
 
I also joined a co-working space. We are in temporary accommodation, living among boxes until we complete on our house. Having a proper place to work matters more than I realised. Patch has been exactly what I needed. Shout out to Hetty and Katie for making me feel welcome.

I promised my son that once we moved, he could buy books (agsin). He has already collected 5 new stamps at Waterstones. Watching him happy has helped me regulate, as if I am borrowing his joy and living vicariously through his eyes. This is his 2nd major move too... watching him be a team player is an inspiration. 
 
And because the underlying emotion is unrest, I have been leaning into gratitude meditations by Louise Hay, played each night and morning by my husband. 
 
A week can feel like an eternity when things keep going wrong this time it was my life, but other times it will be in business. The choice is yours on how you want to experience it. Some days will be harder. 

Remember to show yourself grace and find the little joys in life. 

It has been my saving grace.

Subconscious sabotage from others does more damage than we know.

Last night I asked my hairdresser to cut my hair short.

She’s known me for years but only ever with long hair.

She knew that every time I’d gone short with other hair dressers in the past it’s ended up looking a bit frumpy or not quite me.

But I was ready… and she cut it.

But she left the length safe and longer than what I wanted. It was unlike her, but she was overly cautious and hesitated. 


So when I said, “Can we go shorter?”
she did…

…but not without resistance.

And this is the part that is rarely talked about when you decide to change.

You can make the decision.
You can take the action.
You can voice it clearly…

But your environment is still calibrated to who you used to be.

So even when you initiate the change,
the people around you can dampen it.
And it’s definitely not malicious. 

I see this with creative founders all the time.

They decide to:
raise their prices
focus their positioning
stop over-delivering 
sell differently
lead more directly

…but their environment, collaborators, even friends keep relating to them like they’re still the same as they used to be

This puts you in a bind…

Do you mould yourself back into the environment
so everyone else feels comfortable?

Or do you change the environment
and risk losing the sense of belonging that came with it?

Real change requires behavioural change that impacts relations which is why the hard part
is becoming someone new but the harder part is staying the same because the world around you hasn’t caught up yet.

5 years ago, I noticed something uncomfortable...people with less experience than me were getting invited into rooms I wasn’t.  They were advising, speaking, influencing decisions.

They may have been good, but I was no less than them. What made them the chosen ones and me not?

I tried to fix it by working harder and doing more, but really, that wasn’t the problem.

I was clear to clients, but vague to the market.
Once I saw that distinction, everything changed.
I stopped trying to be impressive and started come back into my own body and understanding me, coming to terms with who I am and what I stood for.  

I always knew what I wanted to be doing, but expressing that was always hard. Once I figured out how to express it, I started shared my thinking in a way others could relate to.  I began receiving invitations to speak, to be interviewed but mainly to work with my ideal clients. 

This is what I believe personal branding actually is.  Not visibility for its own sake.  But being recognisable to the right people at the right moment.

Over the next few months, I’m working with a small number of experienced business owners who are good at what they do but under-positioned.

There’s a phase in every creative business where improving your creative skill will genuinely move the needle.

And that’s a warranted focus… for a while. 

At some point, and it’s different for everyone, getting better at the work doesn’t automatically translate into better business.

The tricky part is recognising when that shift has happened.

If you’ve been producing strong work for a number of years and the revenue hasn’t changed much, it’s about how your capabilities are being understood by your clients 👇🏻

✨ What role do clients believe you’re there to play?
✨ Are you brought in to execute their plan?
✨ Or are you involved in shaping those decisions in the first place?

In my experience, price tends to shift once the perceived role shifts.
Small improvements to the portfolio rarely increase the rates in any meaningful way.

If your work is solid but your growth feels flat, it may be worth examining your positioning before assuming you need another course that is focused on creative skill development.
