Here's what turning down that money actually taught me:

Taking funding would have meant building their vision.

They wanted projections and roadmaps before we'd shipped anything.

But you don't know what customers need until you build and test.

Bootstrapping forced clarity.

Every dollar mattered. Every feature had to prove itself. 

No board meetings about hitting growth targets that were made up in a spreadsheet.

Just product, retention, and revenue.

The constraints made me sharper.

When you have a 2-year runway, you optimise for investor updates.

When you bootstrap, you optimise for what actually works.

40,000+ users in 103 countries later, I kept 100% control.

Giving up 60% equity would have meant building someone else's company with my time.

The lesson? Don't fear rough waters.

Seek them.

Most businesses try to rank # 1, while the insanely profitable ones do something else.

They try to rank EVERYWHERE.

Not just the top organic result, but:

- the paid ad above it
- multiple YouTube videos
- “People also ask”
- a forum or Reddit result underneath

As much share of search as possible.

Because when you own the page, you don’t just win clicks. You own the customer journey.

Here's the shift I see:

As more search moves into AI, the goal is no longer “page 1”.

It’s owning the answer.

Businesses are already paying attention to how they show up in ChatGPT and AI search, because that’s where more discovery is happening.

A simple example.

If you ask ChatGPT: “Best Squarespace SEO experts”

You’ll often see:

1. Me
2. Sam, one of our clients
3. Tiffany, our head of SEO

If we really are the best, that’s how it should look.

That’s share of answer.

When paid ads arrive inside ChatGPT, this goes further.

Intent & targeting get combined in one single response surface.

99% of people are wrong about ChatGPT ads

They WON'T work like Google ads

Google: you type "plumber near me", and an ad appears.

Simple.

ChatGPT: you type "My kitchen sink is leaking badly and I need someone reliable today who won't overcharge me and has good reviews in Manchester."

What keyword do you bid on there?

You don't.

People don't use ChatGPT like Google. 

They don't type keywords. They ask full questions. Sometimes paragraphs.

My last 5 prompts had an average length of 43 words!!

You can't target "plumber near me" when nobody's searching that way.

You need to target the conversation. The problem. The intent.

+ your ideal ICP.

That's why they'll be SO effective.

Google trained us to think in keywords. Meta trained us in demographics and interests.

ChatGPT is different.

It's not about who's searching. It's about what problem they're trying to solve.

And most advertisers I speak to haven't thought about this yet.

They're still thinking in keywords.

That won't work.

Just like how me walking a chihuahua in a pink jumper just doesn't work 😅

They're NOT:

Waiting for the platform to launch
Waiting to see how it works
Waiting for case studies

By then, they'll be 6 months behind 🤷‍♂️

The smart ones ARE:

Studying how their customers use ChatGPT
Tracking what prompts people in their industry type
Ranking clients organically in AI search now

One agency owner told me:

"I'm briefing my team on this today. When it launches, we'll be ready on day one."

That's the difference.

Waiting for perfect information or moving on with incomplete information.

The opportunity isn't in the ads themselves.

It's in understanding the shift before your competitors do.

Who said "SEO is dead"!

YouTube paid me £4,939 last year.

But that’s not why I’m doubling down on it.

Some of my videos and thumbnails look unpolished.

I agree. Sometimes they are.

That’s usually because the person judging them isn’t the audience.

Good content isn’t meant to appeal to everyone.

If it does, it’s probably doing nothing.

You should turn some people off, AS LONG AS the right people lean in.

I like YouTube because it compounds.

Videos I made 2–3 years ago still bring in leads today.

They still drive revenue and attract the exact audience I want to work with.

And YouTube pays me while I test ideas.

Right now, I’m exploring a tool for agencies and brands running ChatGPT ads.

Breaking: OpenAI to begin testing ChatGPT ads on Feb 6th

(huge opportunity for marketers)

We’ve known ChatGPT ads were coming for a few weeks now, but there was no confirmed timeline.

Now we have one.

What’s interesting is how they’re rolling this out.

This isn’t a wide launch.

It’s a small, tightly controlled beta.

Reports suggest OpenAI is asking for $200k+ minimum commitments, with some brands approached for even more.

I've seen a lot of people criticise this online.

$200k minimum plus $60 CPM is high...

But I'm convinced this is the right strategy.

This isn’t about monetising traffic quickly.

It’s about protecting the user experience and figuring out how ads fit inside a conversational product.

Which makes sense.

OpenAI will be using this time to:

Figure out Ad Manager requirements
Manage the inevitable PR damage during ad rollout
Give advertisers what they need

This is going to be fascinating to watch.

90% of brands should be focusing on AI visibility right now

(despite what the "experts" say)

I see a lot of posts about Google's dominance.

That ranking #1 in traditional search is still better than ranking in AI results.

The data backs that up. 

Google drives more clicks. Has 10x the search volume of ChatGPT.

And yes, people don't click through from AI answers like they do from blue links.

But here's what everyone's missing.

Project that forward.

What does the future look like?

It's not 10 blue links.

It's answers. Recommendations. Conversations that lead to decisions.

If you're still optimising purely for blue links, you're focussing on a dominant but dying market.

Don't believe me? Look where Google is quietly moving.

Ads in AI Overview mode. Gemini will be next.

They see it coming.

And here's the part no one's talking about.

When AI automation becomes accessible to every business, the bar changes completely.

If anyone can snap their fingers and have an AI agent handling their SEO, their content, their optimisation, only the most innovative brands win.

The ones visible in AI. The ones recommended by default.

OpenAI announced $60 CPMs for ChatGPT ads.

Higher than live NFL broadcasts. TRIPLE what Meta charges.

Everyone's freaking out about the cost.

They're missing the point.

They're automating reporting, creative testing, and budget allocation.

They're hiring people who know how to set up and optimise AI systems.

Not people who manually adjust campaigns.

Junior roles either transform or disappear.

The work they used to do is now done by AI.

The agencies that win are the ones building systems, not doing tasks.

At my agency, Kashaf & I will be spending 1 day/week in-person building using OpenClaw.

This kind of automation gets our clients better results for cheaper.

The question isn't whether AI replaces agency work. It's whether your agency becomes AI-first before your clients realise they don't need you.
