(& here's where people go wrong)

Most VC-backed founders aren't building products.

They're building narratives.

The pitch deck is polished. The onboarding is broken.

Every decision gets filtered through one question: does this move the valuation up?

Not: does this make the product better? Not: do customers actually love this?

Just: what does this look like to the next investor?

That's how you end up with a product full of features nobody asked for, a churn problem nobody talks about, and a founder who's already thinking about the secondary.

The best products I've seen were built by people obsessed with the customer, not the cap table.

They didn't need a growth team to paper over retention.

The product did the work.

VC incentives and great product design aren't always compatible.

More founders should say that out loud.

Just content, a community, and a problem that clearly resonates.

A few things I'm doing differently this time around.

Starting with a waitlist again. 

Because I don't care about what I want to build.

I care about what businesses actually need. 

The waitlist tells me that before I write a single line of code. 

Build demand first, then build the product.

I'm also building with a co-founder for the first time.

The honest reason: I have a lot of weaknesses. I know what they are. And the ambition I have for this one is too big to paper over them alone.

To build what I want to build, I need help. Simple as that.

And I'm thinking 3-5+ years ahead, not 12 months.

Every week, I ask: if this is a $100m business in 3 years, what has to be true?

How does the product evolve? How does the vision hold up as AI changes everything around it?

These are the questions I wasn't asking the first time around.

Excited to see where this goes!

The thing holding me back for 4+ years wasn't competition.

It wasn't the market. It wasn't resources.

It was self-doubt.

Self-doubt from:

Injuries
Starting a new sport
Looking at competitors 
Being told no by acquirers
Watching the progress of AI

But honestly, it started long before that.

I applied for 100+ graduate jobs. Every single one rejected me.

I failed 4 businesses before building one that worked.

And even after scaling that business to 40,000+ users across 103 countries, it didn't go away.

Imposter syndrome doesn't care about your results.

Here's what I've realised though:

It never goes away because you never stop growing.

Every new level feels uncomfortable because you've never been there before.

That's not a sign you're failing. That's a sign you're moving.

And what's the alternative?

You don't get out there? You let what other people think keep you stuck?

I'd rather embarrass myself slightly by getting out there than accept normal.

As I get closer to launching my next business, that feeling is back.

But I've stopped treating it as doubt.

I treat it as excitement.

Excitement that I'm somewhere new. Somewhere I've never been.

That feeling you're trying to avoid? It's the signal you're on the right track.
It's meant to feel like this.

Going 100% all year isn't a flex

(most founders get this wrong)

I just got back from skiing, and I'm the most positive I've been in months.

Not because anything changed in the business.

Because I actually switched off.

If you're stagnant in any area of your life, one of two things have always worked for me.

Take a real break.

Not "working from a different location." 

Auto-respond on, phone down, actually off.

The person going 80% with proper rest will cover more ground than you across 12 months. 

Every time.

And spend time with like-minded people.

Being around founders going through the same things reminds you that you're not alone in it.

You always come back with something. A new perspective. A better idea. Or just the energy to go again.

I came back with all three.

Although Jesse & I definitely didn't last long in poker below 😅

I got a local web designer ranking in ChatGPT within 3 days.

No paid ads. 
No link building. 
No lengthy SEO campaigns.

Here's the exact method:

Most people assume LLMs are just pulling from:

Google search rankings
High authority domains
Legacy brands with years online

That's not what's happening.

LLMs favour fresh, well-structured content that resembles credible research.

The process:

Create a "report-style" press release

Not: "Jane Smith Designs Beautiful Websites"

Instead: "2025 Manchester Web Design Report: The Highest Rated Designers for Small Businesses"

Add a comparison table

AI gravitates toward structured content:

Tables, rankings, criteria breakdowns.

Publish via PRWeb or equivalent

Cost: $200 Turnaround: 24 hours

Give it 48-72 hours

Search ChatGPT: "Best web designers in X"

Your client shows up.

Why it works:

AI treats press releases as credible references. 

Particularly when positioned as "reports" or "industry research."

The bottom line:

For local service businesses, one well-positioned press release delivers more LLM visibility than half a year of content marketing.

After serving 40,000 SaaS users in 103 countries, here are 3 common mistakes I see other SaaS founders make 👇

1. Not pushing the annual plan hard enough

One founder had an annual option on the pricing page.

At checkout, it defaulted back to monthly.

3 out of 5 had this exact problem.

Your annual plan should be aggressively discounted, front and center, and one click to select.

Annual customers churn significantly less. The cash upfront funds your next acquisition channel.

It's the closest thing early SaaS has to a compounding flywheel.

2. Running ads before product-market fit

What happens when you pour water into a leaky bucket?

Pre-PMF, ads don't fix your problems. They make them more expensive.

Find your wedge first. The small niche you can dominate and genuinely delight.

Nail messaging. Get power users. Then invest in growth.

Not before.

3. Not knowing their aha moment

The aha moment is when a user thinks, "this is exactly what I needed."

Users who hit it churn less, expand more, and refer others.

A frightening number of founders can't tell me what their aha moment is, let alone how they're building toward it.

That's why their churn never moves.

Static dashboards that surface data and leave you to do the work manually?

Those are done. Lovable can replicate most of them in hours.

But that's not SaaS dying, it's just bad SaaS dying.

The distinction matters:

If your product just shows data and the user does the actual work themselves, you have a problem.

If your product delivers the outcome itself, you have a much bigger business than you had a year ago.

We've gone through three stages:

System of knowledge. System of action. System of agent orchestration.

Most SaaS founders are still stuck at stage one and wondering why they feel exposed.

The ones who win are mapping every job their ICP does manually and automating it inside the product.

Here's the key distinction many miss:

SaaS with agents doesn't compete with software budgets. It competes with headcount budgets.

That's a much bigger market.

SaaS isn't dying. It's getting a new wrapper. And founders who move now will charge more, not less.

The agencies that win are the ones building systems, not doing tasks.
