Molecules to Medicine

Molecules to Medicine was established with a grant from the Victorian government based on an application I wrote to set up training in translation and commercialisation for biomedical postdocs.   The 12 month program combined on-the-job training with an expert series of 20 seminars, workshops and team training exercises.  Over the 3 years of the grant period, the 109 graduates from 16 leading Medical Research Institutes and Universities learnt about IP, assessing the commercial value of research, how industry thinks and what industry needs, pitching for finance and commercial partners, contracts and negotiation, the regulatory framework and managing multi-disciplinary teams from 40 expert speakers.  During the program, the interns raised $10m from non-traditional sources, made 49 collaborations with industry, signed 25 licences and made fundamental contributions to 3 spin out companies.

BioDiem Ltd

I led the precursor company from start up, through transformation into BioDiem in 2001, to an IPO on the ASX in 2004.  Set up a network of research partnerships in Australia, Europe, Russia and the US, including a co-operative agreement with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, to develop the world’s first mammalian cell culture vaccine against avian and swine influenza. 

Negotiated agreements with Merck in the US and a division of Akzo Nobel in Europe.  Later with the World Health Organisation, negotiated a deal to provide the Russian-based, egg-derived flu vaccine for pandemic protection in developing countries that has since resulted in a licence with India, where the vaccine is now on the market and will be exported to other developing countries.

My responsibilities included developing the strategic direction of the company and directing its progress from a startup to an IPO on the ASX, negotiating contracts with pharmaceutical companies, raising money, hiring and managing staff, running pre clinical and clinical trials for products in development and reporting to the board of directors, and the investment community via the ASX.

Invested in and guided the development of startup companies in tourism publishing, security hardware and biotech.  Researched, developed and published over 10,000 copies of the London Locator, which allowed tourists to find nearby attractions, restaurants, hotels, shows and transport using an innovative map that expanded the main tourist areas of London.

Sold private investment management business Williams Attwood P/L into HSBC.  Advised as a fund manager on $2 billion of investments in the resources sector and acted as a client manager for $700m of industry superannuation funds.
