BREAKING NEWS: The world’s gone mad. So why host a free International Women’s Day shoot?

Because it matters.

The Buddhist teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh has a quote that I can't stop thinking about: “Everyone wants to change the world," he writes. 

"No one wants to do the dishes."

What I admire about women is that our lives rarely allow us to avoid either of these two things. 

We raise children, run organisations, advocate, build businesses, support communities, lead teams, run marathons, conduct research, write policy, teach classrooms, design technology, launch start-ups, sit on boards, practise medicine, publish books, coach teams, manage farms, analyse data, lead protests… and yes, still stack the dishwasher every day.

When geopolitical headlines flood our national attention and conversation, I come back to furiously, relentlessly ask myself: What can I practically and generously do for the people around me? 

This International Women’s Day I chose to invest my energy close to home.
Into community. Into women I don't actually know, but who live right near me. 

The ones who need me, just as I need them.

Because that’s the truth about local and global communities: none of us can do this alone.

As a photographer, videographer and mum of three young kids, a photo shoot showcasing women in Canberra is one small thing I can contribute.

Of course, this shoot didn’t happen solo.

What if, instead of magazine covers that feature billionaires & supermodels, we featured educators, carers and community builders?

What if, instead of billboards that spruik endless products to consume that destroy the environment, we focused on the people who show us better ways to care for our earth and each other?

Social thinker & historian Rutger Bregman says our problem isn't a lack of ideas or generosity. It's a matter of who and what we've chosen to celebrate.

Collecting your kids after school shouldn’t cost you your career. Two incomes shouldn’t mean financial distress. Leaving your newborn to return to your job before you’re ready shouldn’t be the norm.

Yet this is the daily reality for parents all across the country. 

I love working with Georgie Dent CEO of The Parenthood to spotlight these issues. 

When we started recording this video, Federal Police told us to stop filming. So we moved 200 metres away from Parliament House… and started filming again.

When I think of the the work that I do today - elevating the visibility and impact of leaders - I think of 18 December 1894 when the government granted women the right to vote and stand for Parliament. I think of the Sex Discrimination Act of 1984 that made discrimination on the basis of sex, marital status and pregnancy unlawful. 

In every case, women have had to fight, advocate and relentlessly campaign for basic rights that we all now take for granted. 

It is my honour to support women who do this work today 💪

It’s easy to feel like parents don’t count. So many of the systems around us assume we will cope. That we will sacrifice. 

That we will stay quiet and piece it all together while deep down we are struggling. Our 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 is your chance to change that.
