The Story of the Straw Horse 

My grandmother came from extremely humble beginnings. She was the first in her family to go to college, a milestone she never took for granted. She believed deeply in what education could unlock, not just for herself but for others.

She became a teacher, and she loved teaching. Some of my earliest memories are sitting at her kitchen table with those little magnetic alphabet letters on the fridge, learning my ABCs while Sesame Street played in the background.

One holiday, her students gave her a handmade straw horse complete with a tiny felt saddle and bridle. She adored it. It was a symbol of everything she believed in: learning, gratitude, and the joy of giving. 

Of course, I was obsessed with it as a kid. She’d let me play with it, always reminding me to “be careful.”

When she passed, I asked if I could keep that straw horse. It’s sat on my desk ever since,  a quiet reminder of where I come from and who helped me get here.

Now, as a content marketer, I like to imagine her looking down, smiling…and probably editing my work with her red pen.

The straw horse reminds me that stories matter, not because they’re perfect, but because they carry meaning. Just like hers did. ❤️
