I was 19.

College crush. He said no.

And I spiraled: No one will ever love me.

So I stopped trying.

I rejected myself a hundred times before he could reject me once.

I became very small. Very safe. Very alone.

But somehow, I kept moving.

One day I met a stranger.

Not the one I thought I needed.

Just a man who saw me.

Really saw me.

I married him.

He became my biggest cheerleader.

He adores me.

He stands by me in health and sickness.

And I had three boys.

Three.

If that crush had said yes, I wouldn't be here.

I wouldn't have them.

I wouldn't be doing this work.

Every time I look at my husband and my kids, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Not a single thing.

But here's what I don't say out loud:

Sometimes I think about that other timeline.

The one where he said yes.

The one where I became someone different.

I grieve her sometimes.

The version of me that doesn't exist.

And then my son asks me something.

My husband looks at me.

And I remember: I chose this.

Every single moment.

The rejection didn't ruin my life.

My response to the rejection almost did.

I rejected myself so thoroughly I almost missed the actual love coming.

This is what I see with directors:

One rejection.

So they reject themselves a hundred times.

They stop trying.

They stop asking.

They play so small nobody can hurt them.

And they miss their actual life.

People will say no.

But that's not the worst thing.

The worst thing is never showing up.

Never letting anyone see you.

Never trying.

My manager gave me a coffee filter for Christmas.
Not a joke.
A real coffee filter wrapped like it meant something.

At that point, I was saying everything.
Every thought. Every idea. Every correction.
