I am the Founder, CEO and Clinical Director of The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre. This is a multidisciplinary small animal specialist referral hospital in the South East of England west of and near London. The Ralph has one of the UK's biggest 24-7-365 Emergency and Critical Services. Our compassion- and ethical practice-focused startup hospital opened in February 2019. It is now (October 2023) the UK's largest independent (non-corporate, non-university) referral centre with ~230 Ralphers. (http://theralph.vet/)

I set up the Veterinary ECC Small Talk project. This is now centred on a busy Facebook group with 54,000 members as of October 2023 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/veterinaryeccsmalltalk/). I also wrote a book and developed an app on Small Animal Emergency Medicine (https://www.kimbavetapps.com/).

I set up, personally fund and run The Ralph Site (http://www.theralphsite.com/), a non-profit pet loss support project including a website with information, resources and memorials, a blog, and a busy Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TheRalphSite/) and private group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/theralphsite). The group now has 12,000 members (October 2023).

I am a Co-founder of Ethical Globe (https://www.ethicalglobe.com/), a directory and community of vegan people, businesses, organisations and projects, and of Veterinary Vegan Network (https://www.facebook.com/groups/vetvegans/).

In 2023, I became a Board Member for BradyCare, an animal welfare and veterinary education charity (https://bradycare.org/).

Co-authored value chain analyses of the rice and fish sectors to develop recommendations for future interventions under the USAID-funded Feed the Future Sierra Leone Agriculture Project. The project supports the development of rice and fish farming systems to increase productivity and improve food and nutrition security and incomes in Tonkolili District.

Consultant

Conducted an independent science quality assurance review of the $25 million USAID funded Aquaculture for Income and Nutrition (AIN) project on behalf of WorldFish. Also responsible for drafting a book presenting the outcomes and achievements of the AIN project between 2012 and 2015, including 12 case studies of key areas of activities and outputs.

Responsible for co-authoring three scientific journal papers for the CGIAR Research Programme on Aquatic Agricultural Systems in Bangladesh, under the ‘sustainable increases in productivity’ research theme. The subjects of the papers were: i) assessing the impact of investments in improved fish seed and farmer training on homestead aquaculture productivity in Southwest Bangladesh; ii) the adaptation of integrated aquatic agricultural systems to salinity and other drivers in coastal Bangladesh; and iii) a cross-country comparison of the productivity, sustainability and contribution to food security of homestead production systems in South Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.

Developed a business case for the engagement of the CGIAR Research Programme on Livestock and Fish in Ghana. The business case identified key ‘research in development’ opportunities for the pro-poor development of the farmed tilapia value chain. An assessment of the Center’s activities to develop an improved tilapia strain and its impact on the aquaculture sector was also included.

THEY OFTEN CRY OUTREACH

Developed a strategy for the not-for-profit organisation They Often Cry Outreach to increase its sustainable development impact in St Lucia through promoting sustainable agriculture approaches such as Permaculture and Conservation Agriculture. Specific responsibilities included: leading a team mission to St Lucia to collect data and interview relevant stakeholders; and developing a proposal for a Permaculture Pilot Project to enhance livelihoods and food and nutrition security and regenerate the natural resource base in a poor rural community in southern St Lucia.

Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique

Drafted a strategic framework for the development of a ‘green school’ in rural northern Mozambique, as part of an international team of experts (in Conservation Agriculture, education and e-learning and architecture). Specific responsibilities included data collection and fieldwork in Mozambique, coordinating the team and writing the strategy document for submission to the Foundation’s Board.

Responsible for reviewing, updating and completing the draft ‘Aquaculture Big Numbers’ report on global aquaculture, in support of the ‘FAO-Allfish Project – Improving market access and coordination: guidelines for product traceability and small-scale producer clusters’. The report was published as an FAO Technical Paper.

Responsible for conducting fieldwork in Ghana and preparing a case study for the EC funded Aquaculture for Food Security, Poverty Alleviation and Nutrition (AFSPAN) project. The case study evaluated the contribution of aquaculture to poverty alleviation and food security in Ghana and identified enabling conditions for and drivers of the development of the aquaculture sector.

Responsible for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the Aquaculture Advisory Group in Zambia and Aquaculture Farmer Organisations (AFOs) in Uganda and writing guidelines for the development of AFOs in sub-Saharan Africa. Field work was conducted in Zambia and Uganda and the report was presented at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Aquaculture Network for Africa in Entebbe, Uganda.

Responsible for: i) conducting a literature review on the impacts of aquaculture on poverty, aquaculture 
value chains and markets, and multiplier effects and institutions related to aquaculture development;
and ii) co- authoring a WorldFish Issues Brief entitled "Aquaculture and markets: a research agenda".

Founder and Director at Animal Think Tank - Helping to Catalyse a Mass Social Movement for Animal Freedom in the UK

Having connected some of the dots between our oppression of other animals, our oppression of humans and our destruction of the living world, for the past several years I have been working on issues related to animal freedom, social justice, agroecology, sustainability and food system transformation. 

I am a founder and director of Animal Think Tank (www.animalthinktank.org.uk) a grassroots organisation building a mass social movement for Animal Freedom in the UK. I am co-editor of the book ‘Rethinking Food and Agriculture: New Ways Forward’ (www.inclusiveresponsibility.earth) and co-founder of the Veterinary Vegan Network (https://www.facebook.com/veterinaryvegannetwork) and Ethical Globe (www.ethicalglobe.com).  

I have been involved in social change for most of my career, having worked in the international development sector from 2003 to 2018. I have worked with NGOs, foundations, government ministries and international research and development institutions. My work focused on conducting research for rural development projects in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. This ranged from planning multi-million dollar projects to assessing their impact on poverty, food security and livelihoods. My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and by international organisations including the CGIAR and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO). 

I was born in the UK and have lived and worked in the UK, Switzerland, Kenya, Guyana, Malaysia and Ghana. In addition I have undertaken short-term projects and consultancies in Uganda, India, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, Zambia, Mozambique, St Lucia, Bangladesh and Sierra Leone.

I have a PhD in Development Economics (SOAS), an MSc in Development Management (LSE) and a BSc in Economics and Politics (Bristol).
