Serhat delivers coaching services to founders and tech leaders. He mostly works with entrepreneurs, tech executives, and individual contributors in Turkey, the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Serhat started his career in 2009 as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company and worked at Istanbul and London offices. For the last 10 years, he assumed leadership roles in the tech industry. He founded two startups named Sporena and Metrekare and raised investment from two venture capitals. He also worked as an associate at Earlybird Venture Capital, a leading VC in Europe, and worked at Facebook as a Client Solutions Manager in London.

Serhat was ranked first among 1.8 million students in the nationwide University Entrance Exam in 2004 and graduated second in class from Bosphorus University as an Electrical Engineer. He has interests in personal development, positive psychology, meditation, and existentialism.

In my defense, I was busy... writing newsletters. The irony isn't lost on me.

I keep coming back to this question: what actually makes a newsletter worth reading?

It’s not the fancy design or the clever automation. I’ve seen beautiful emails that feel empty, and plain ones that stick with me for days.

Sometimes I think it’s just honesty. The sense that a real person sat down and wrote something they actually care about. Not just another list of tips or trends.

But then I look at the numbers, and the most “honest” issues don’t always perform the best. The click rates are lower, the replies are quieter. 

It’s confusing. 

I want to believe that authenticity wins in the end, but the data doesn’t always agree. 

When this happens, I trust the data more than my gut. What about you?

Everyone says they want to start a newsletter.

But here's what actually happens:
They get stuck picking a platform.
Overthink their topic.
Never hit publish.

I've seen this cycle play out with dozens of creators.

There’s a part of me that still gets nervous every time I hit send on a newsletter. 

You’d think after years of doing this, the anxiety would fade. But it doesn’t. 

I worry about typos, about boring people, about sending something that just lands with a thud. 

But the funny thing is, the issues I’m most unsure about are often the ones that get the best response. 

It’s like people can sense when you’re being real, even if you’re not sure it’s good enough. 

I don’t know if that ever goes away. Maybe it shouldn’t. Maybe a little bit of fear is what keeps the work honest. 

Or maybe I just need more coffee. 

Either way, I’m learning to live with the nerves. They’re a sign I still care.

Doesn’t matter if you’re a creator, founder, or solo builder—if you don’t have an email list, you’re missing out.
