No wonder a lot of marketers like a good drink.

People can sense AI content, and it's not just the em dash. It's damaging to brands and personal brands. Some companies should just pay a little bit extra for a copywriter.

Picture this. 

Somebody shares a highly personal story on LinkedIn. 

As you scroll down and start reading, you start to feel like the whole thing has been written by AI. 

Even if the story has an element of truth, it stops feeling genuine.

And I bet when you look at the comments section, you can spot the AI-generated ones too. 

Maybe this post will attract a few...

This is the same for brands. 

If you look at a website and suspect it's been written by AI, you lose a little bit of trust in that business. 

I know I do.

Here's the thing though.

If you're going to use AI, an increasing number of people are going to spot out-of-the-box ChatGPT or Claude content. 

To get something that's less detectable, you need to create a custom project with lots of rules wrapped around it, trained specifically on your business. 

The problem is, most businesses don't have that ability in-house.

Even if they do manage to get it to produce decent content, it's never 100%. It still has the whiff of AI about it.

If you must use AI, the best combo is to pair it with a skilled copywriter. 

You can generate ideas yourself and get them to add the finishing touches. 

Like an editor. 

Or you could get them to do the whole thing...

What's happening right now is that people are saving time and money, but at the same time, they could be damaging their brand. 

That £1,000 saved on by not working with a copywriter could be costing £50,000 in sales...

We may tell ourselves that our customers won't notice if something has been written by AI.

However, if we able to detect when other people use out-of-the-box ChatGPT to write copy, it's likely your customers, friends and followers will detect it if we do the same...

The people who get this right will have an edge. 

The ones that don't will wonder why their content looks fine on paper but isn't converting.

Top tip: If you find an ad with lots of impressions that has been running for a long time, it's probably making your competitor money...

You can use those to inspire your own ads...

Here's a quick tip for my fellow marketing/ad geeks.  There is a free tool that lots of social ads experts use to see which ads their competitors are spending the most money on. 

It's called Meta Ads library.  

All you need to do is stick in a competitor's name, search and then sort by impressions. 

The ad is likely making a healthy return if the following 3 things are true...

1) The ad looks like it's focused on conversion, not general awareness

2) It's been running for a reasonable period of time (the longer the better)

3) You suspect that the team running the ads is likely competent, because only a numpty would let a bad ad spend tons of cash

This data can be used to understand which products are selling well.

It can help you understand the type of creative that works

And if you do this with a few competitors, you might start seeing patterns emerge. 

You can use the findings to inform your own campaigns.
