After being promoted to the Head of Sales at Assembly Payments, I led a team of 3 Channel Managers. During my tenure in this role, my sales team averaged attainment of 120% of our monthly quota - a result I was very dedicated to maintaining and one I am proud of. Beyond just sales, the role required a deep understanding of the payments and technology infrastructure that underpinned our product. I was responsible for devising and implementing sales and marketing strategies and processes, including a Partner Program which set out a uniform and consistent approach to partner and channel management. I was also responsible for:

- designing a bespoke Sales playbook, with a view to ensuring sales processes and messaging were uniform across our growing team; and

- working closely with Westpac, a key investor, to deliver marketing campaigns that were both true to the product and also well received by key enterprise merchants.

As a Channel Manager I was responsible for constructing complex partnership agreements with Point of Sale (POS) companies, and was fortunate to sign over 50 customers in under 8 months before being promoted to Head of Sales, averaging attainment of 110% of my monthly quota. In my time in this role, I negotiated merchant facilities across multiple verticals for SME and Enterprise customers in the hospitality, retail and Medi space including the Salvation Army (400 stores), ALH Group (330 stores) and United Chemist (50+ stores). This role required me to be very agile and work cross-functionally, often coordinating development with both internal and external development engineers, as well as coordinate large scale roll-outs with our customer success team.

My role was multi-faceted and required me to advise clients on operational and work-flow strategies as well as to manage pipeline and sales cycles from end-to-end.

Shopify merchants - BEWARE!

Shopify Payments is starting to close merchant accounts. 
Even for established businesses with long, positive histories. 

Why is this happening?
Shopify is tightening risk controls and compliance due to the Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP).
VAMP tracks high-risk merchants with excessive chargebacks and fraud. 

If flagged by VAMP, Shopify Payments may close or freeze accounts to stay compliant with Visa rules - protecting the payment ecosystem from risk. 
In some cases, very little warning is given to brands.

What should you do?
> Diversify your payment options: Don’t rely solely on Shopify Payments. 
Work with MoR solutions like Reach or gateways like Checkout.com
> Stay proactive: Use Shopify’s official support channels and monitor for any unusual account activity or notifications.
> Read the terms: Make sure your business and products comply with Shopify Payments’ ever-evolving policies.

The EU Just Nuked A Major Loophole 

EU Finance Ministers have agreed to remove the €150 customs exemption.
Meaning in 2026, Cross-border sellers into the EU will be hit hard.

Last year alone, 4.6 billion parcels entered the EU under this threshold.
91% came from China.
All paid zero duties.

That party is over.

But what does it all mean basil?

Well from 2026:
> Every shipment needs full customs documentation
> Every parcel pays duties
> Every parcel cops a €2 handling fee

If your EU strategy relied on cheap, duty-free, low-value parcels… that moat just evaporated.

US customs and tax teams have seen it all before. 
And they’re cracking down on these shortcuts - one audit could cost you way more in fines and legal trouble than you’d save upfront. 

So why do brands fall for this? Because tariffs are confusing and stressful, and quick fixes are tempting. 
But compliance isn’t optional, and shortcuts aren’t worth risking your reputation.

Is it Game Over for Sketchy Payment Channels to China?

Payment requirements in China for receiving funds from abroad just got stricter.
As Chinese banks are now asking for much more detailed paperwork before they’ll release overseas payments
Including things like matching contracts, invoices, export customs docs, and tax proof. 

The aim? 

Making sure every payment is legit and fully documented. 
If anything’s missing or inconsistent, expect delays or even holds.

Using a personal bank account? 
That’s likely to trigger even more questions.

So what can you do to avoid delays?

> Get your contracts, invoices, and export docs lined up in advance
> Double check every document matches the payment details
> Use a registered business account (not personal/alipay account like the underground agencies use)
> Plan for extra processing time, and let your team/partners know

China’s goal is to clamp down on money laundering and tax issues. 

Staying organized isn’t just a box to tick - it’s the difference between getting your stock on time and facing avoidable delays.
