PLS is a global provider of SaaS-based business intelligence databases for the energy industry marketed primarily to the financial and investment sector. 

I directed the design, development, and support of the company’s seven SaaS-based applications and expanding online marketing efforts as well as directing go-to-market strategy and product launches. 

Involved in M&A activity helping to evaluate potential SaaS acquisitions and integrated two new SaaS products from the acquisition of a French business intelligence company, expanding PLSs reach to the global energy sector.

enGrant Scientific

enGrant Scientific was a SaaS-based startup providing an online database of current academic research projects and federal, state and private life science funding grants.

I founded the startup and raised the initial funding round and brought on board two additional co-founders. I oversaw product design, UI/UX design, product marketing in addition to managing the financial aspects of the startup.

We grew the database to 2.5 million individual research grants covering 10 years, representing 44,000 institutions worldwide and 350,000 researchers. This data was cross-referenced with 1.3 million peer-reviewed publications with over 30GB of total searchable data.

I developed the IT infrastructure the SaaS-based application was deployed via Amazon Web Services (AWS). We developed a full suite of support systems which continuously crawled and indexed funding and publication sites performing real-time updates to the database.

Our customers were companies providing products and services to researchers in the life sciences. These included providers of laboratory instruments, software, reagents and providers of laboratory services. The company ceased operations in 2013 sold off its SaaS platform and database after the loss of outside funding.

Eurofins MWG Operon

Operon was a $25M annual revenue manufacturer of oligos (synthetic DNA), siRNA, genetic micro-arrays, and genetic sequencing services, both Sanger-based and 454-based whole genome sequencing. Eurofins-MWG-Operon was formed by a merger of MWG Biotech USA and Operon Biotechnologies.

As VP of Sales & Marketing, managed a $4.5M annual sales & marketing budget. I was responsible for rebuilding and expanding both the marketing and the field sales teams as well as managing the existing inside sales and sales support groups.

My 18-person sales team worked the Western Hemisphere with offices in US, Canada and Latin America. I developed their sales training and compensation programs. I also restructured my 14-person marketing team, shifting the team from print-based brand-identity marketing to lead-generation and lead-nurturing with an emphasis on online marketing. I tightly integrated the sales and marketing teams with an interlocking compensation plan and focused marketing on a stronger sales-ops and sales support role.

I also built a dedicated software development and data analytics group within marketing to support a new tech-focused marketing approach. This group provided behavioral analytics and built a comprehensive internal database of current academic life science research projects and grant funding.

During my tenure, we launched two new product lines. 454-based whole genome sequencing services and custom synthesis of large-scale (gram+) oligos and molecular probes.

Vice President of Sales & Marketing

Eurofins-MWG-Operon was formed by a merger of MWG Biotech USA and Operon Biotechnologies as a subsidiary of Eurofins Scientific. 

After the merger, I managed the operational integration of MWG Biotech into Operon Biotechnology, including the shutdown of the North Carolina MWG facility and the layoff and transfer of laboratory, sales and support staff to Operon’s Huntsville AL facility. 

As part of the merger plan, I developed the branding and marketing strategy for keeping the two company's product brands separate but running on a common production line at Operon HQ with the roll-out of a new combined brand identity one year after operational integration.

Merger/Integration Manager

MWG Biotechnology was a $10M annual revenue US subsidiary of a German biotech manufacturing oligos (synthetic DNA), genetic micro-arrays, laboratory instruments and robotics, and Sanger-based genetic sequencing services.

After Eurofins Scientific acquired the Munich based parent company, I joined to oversee a restructuring and turnaround to bring the US subsidiary to profitability and prepare it for an acquisition. The company had not shown a monthly profit since forming 7.5 years earlier.

Developed a comprehensive restructuring plan and brought the company to profitability within 100 days of beginning the restructuring plan, eliminating two of the four product lines and refocusing growth on genetic sequencing services. 

I reorganized departments and staff and introduced a series of marketing innovations for our genetic sequencing services including the deployment of local kiosks in universities providing complete kits for preparing and shipping samples for sequencing.

President - MWG Biotechnology

Sigma-Genosys

Sigma-Genosys is a global biotech manufacturer of oligonucleotides (synthetic DNA), synthetic peptides & anti-sera and genetic micro-arrays.

My responsibilities expanded to include all engineering and robotic development groups in addition to the software development and IT infrastructure teams. The engineering groups designed, built and maintained the production platforms for the company's oligo (synthetic DNA) and peptide production lines. 

This included our robotic DNA and peptide synthesis platforms, as well robotic platforms for high-throughput, fully automated sample prep and liquid handling systems for downstream processing of oligos as well as robotic gene-printing platforms for the manufacture of our Gene Array products.

CTO - Chief Technology Officer

I built out the software development and IT infrastructure teams during the company's growth phase from <$1M to $50M in annual revenue. 

A single production center and data center in Houston expanded over 5 years to 8 production and data centers in the EU, Japan, India, Middle East and North America. 

My teams developed the e-commerce platform and web infrastructure eventually handling >$50M in annual order traffic by 2004. The software and infrastructure teams developed and managed the internal production management and robot control systems for the DNA and Peptide synthesis production lines.

Senior executive with more than 20 years of international experience in the biotech industry. Experienced with venture-backed early-stage and mid-sized growth phase companies in the areas of executive leadership roles, operations management, technology development, and commercial development.

I have held multiple C-Level positions in mid-sized growth-phase companies as well as having been involved in four startups, giving me a broad understanding of how scientific and commercial development has to be tightly integrated to establish a market presence and create long-term value.  In addition, I have direct M&A experience including valuation analysis, turnaround & financial restructuring, and post-acquisition organizational integration.

My current work is primarily with companies in the molecular diagnostics and NGS space. Recent work has involved both commercial development and technology development projects related to Covid diagnostics, CRISPR-based diagnostic platform development and metagenomics-based Next Generation Sequencing for viral infectious disease testing, and NGS Library Prep kits.

I began in the research lab, originally in experimental physics, jumping mid-career into the biotech industry; leading R&D and software development groups in the development of high-throughput robotic platforms for DNA and peptide synthesis, gene-array printing, and high-throughput MALDI-TOF.  In addition, I've run high-throughput oligonucleotide facilities and genetic sequencing facilities, both Sanger and NGS. 

I have the scientific knowledge to understand the scientific and technical side of the business, but the business experience to translate the science into successful products for the research and clinical diagnostics business.
