You ever refer other advisors to your clients? Of course you do.

You ever think about the amount of referrals you're losing from these advisors?

You should. 

BTW, you're not losing them because they don't want to send them. Not because they forgot about you. Not because they don't love you.

It's the dreaded dirty 🤬 D word I post about frequently.

It's delay.

The same thing that kills client referrals? It kills advisor-to-advisor referrals too.

Here's what I mean...

Another advisor wants to connect someone with you (aka refer you). 

What do they do?

Text your cell? Email? LinkedIn DM? 
Who contacts who? Should you reach out? Should they?All of the above?

That confusion = delay. And delay = dead referral.

Advisors with solid COI relationships (accountants, attorneys, consultants, realtors) who should be getting consistent introductions... but aren't.

Why? Too many paths. Too much friction.

Your top 20% of advisor relationships drive 80% of your advisor referrals.

So why are we making it complicated for them?

In getting results (of any kind), this is irrefutable.

Try it out:
Delay is the killer of ___________ (fill-in-the-blank).

"Doing that new thing."
"Going to that new place."
"Reaching out to that person."

Initially, I applied this to referrals 
(Re: referral hand-off delay is the #1 referral killer, blocking up to 80% of referrals).

As our delay story develops, it's showing up everywhere.

I've yet to find an error in this filter.

This leads to the obvious question: How do you fix it?

Catch where it's appearing. Remove it.

Use the delay finder question:

If it takes 5 steps to get ___________ (result)...
How can the result happen in 4 steps? Or 3? Or 1?

Each step removed reduces the delay death trap.

What happens then?

The result gap closes.
Results happen faster.

Guess what?

This is a rare tip that no one can argue against.

It is not possible to add steps and accelerate results at the same time. They cannot coexist.

Want faster results in anything?

Reduce the steps.
Reduce the delay gap.
Win more.

Heard of the Diffusion of Innovation bell curve?

I came across this concept years ago, and it recently came to mind when I was thinking about the internet becoming mainstream. Looking back at how email used to be treated really puts things in perspective.

When I was at PaineWebber, you wanted to email a client? Here's what that looked like: Draft it. Send it to compliance. Get it back. Make edits. Send to compliance again. When the final draft was ready, you could finally hit send. 

That was tedious, to say the least.

But there was an adoption curve. Now everyone and their mother uses email without a second thought.

It seems like a similar thing is going on with AI. The difference? Speed. What took years with the internet is now happening in months, sometimes weeks.

This keeps taking me back to that bell curve over and over. Human nature hasn't changed much since the caveman era, after all.

One thing I've realized: the way this curve works out, it's actually a protection vehicle for humanity.

What do I mean? If we were all early adopters, it would take just one mistake and poof, we're gone. If we were all laggards? We'd still be living in caves.

In the U.S., there are over 5.6 million advisors.

For producers, referrals are King, but they are all chasing the wrong fix.

This comes at a cost of over $50 billion per year and over $9,000 per year each (on average) chasing gimmicks, tricks, and gadgets.

It's the gap that occurs at referral handoff.

1) Be felt, not understood

Emotion is like a big amplifier.
Feeling → memory → trust → conversion.

2) Include a frame shift

People follow people who change how they think.
Ask: “Does this present a NEW way of thinking?”

3) Add “positive tension”

Use contradiction to your advantage.
Example: “Discipline IS freedom.”
_

4) Find “unique” angles

Everyone does “my top x tips”.
My “most underrated” tips is different.

Bonus…

5) Use reciprocity

Give a little extra… like a cherry on top.
If you promised 4 tips… give 5.

2 years ago, I wrote a blog post that changed my life.

It was about how I built my brand.

As always, I held nothing back.
Wrote it, posted and forgot it.

But not for long...

Within 9 hours, someone DM’d me....

"Hey Mayaaz, loved your post about your personal branding journey, is there any way I can work with you?"

Safe to say I was caught off guard. 

But I went with it…

We got on a call to talk.
I walked them through my process.

We literally came up with an offer ON the call!

And they paid me $3,000.

Just like that…. An ENTIRE business was born.

Now we’ve come a LONG way since then.

I lost all joy from writing my posts.
It became a chore. A task to tick off.
It wasn't fun... and the output reflected it.

So I made a big shift:

I decided my content MUST be:

1. Authentic - no "copy what works"
2. Exciting to me - no generic fluff posts
3. Unique - my ideas, my stories, my values

This led to a 33% uptick in engagements in 1 week.

It’s really simple…

Think of why YOU are on the feed.

(Spoiler: It's not to see AI slop)

So create content that: 

→ Makes you proud
→ Makes you excited
→ Makes you energized

Standing out is is not about talent 

It’s about joy, authenticity... and practice.

Linkedin is the best platform for growth. 

(But here’s the ugly truth)

Linkedin just like all the others..

... is still only a social media platform.

With that comes:

- People on here just to sell to you
- People on here just to flex on you
- People on here just to hate on you

And don’t forget:

… People taking shortcuts to get ahead.

Nobody likes:

- Negative comments
- Being told what to do
- Getting “pitch slapped”

AND the most dangerous one:

A boatload of negative comparison.

There will always be someone:

- That is making more money
- That is getting more followers
- That is doing it faster than you

Here’s what I tell myself:

1. You choose what you want to consume
2. You choose who you want to follow
3. You choose where you want to go

AND most importantly, you choose:

How you want to FEEL.

So choose:

→ real positivity
→ more kindness
→ more mental peace

Prioritize people not numbers.

Don't chase your goals.

Attract them. 

Starting my brand felt like staring up a mountain.

Don’t get me wrong, it was exciting.

But... I was overwhelmed and filled with doubt.

- Posting content felt cringe
- Making offers wasn't natural 
- Networking felt quite awkward

Here's what I did know...

Take it ONE step at a time:

1. I focused on sharing my own story 
2. I learned to speak to my audience’s pains
3. I posted consistently even on the“slow” days
4. I embraced the discomfort of being vulnerable

Today, my brand and content brings me new
opportunities, connections and clients.

...Without needing to chase them.

Here’s what I've learned in 20 months:

→ Consistency wins every time. 
→ Your story is your most valuable asset
→ The more value you create, the more you earn

- Sharing mistakes make your wins more believable

4) Use specificity bias

- Specific details make you more trustworthy
- Made $4,200 in 9 days > Made money fast

5) Teach less, show more

- Examples earn 4x more trust than explanations
- Share frameworks, client wins or personal stories

They like and trust you better. 

Engagement isn’t down. Connection is.

They aim for something much greater.

1. What is the mindset shift I want to create?
2. What are the beliefs that make me different?

At this point you've either:

1. crushed most of your goals
2. nowhere near getting them

Either way, you're fine.

Because a calendar is irrelevant.

Success doesn't care about what month it is.

(You shouldn't either)

I've seen way too many people get caught up in: 

- Their ideal timelines
- Having the perfect strategy
- Needing everything to be right

(I've seen it in myself AND my clients)

And as soon as we remove those expectations and deadlines… and just focus on getting really good…

Suddenly EVERYTHING takes off.

The only thing that matters is:

- That you do the thing
- Do it in a way you enjoy
- Continue to learn and improve

We give too much importance to progress or timelines.

But the magic is NOT in the results.

It's in the execution, the mistakes and the lessons.

Massive growth is built on...

"Embarrassingly small" actions.

Tiny wins are often overlooked.

Here are the top 3 WORST personal branding advice 
I've received… and what to do instead:

1. "Just be yourself"

“Yourself” is vague and misunderstood.

Be yourself becomes an excuse for:

- no structure
- no clarity
- no intention

Because “I’m just being me.”

Authenticity without direction is chaos.

What to do instead:

Authenticity isn’t about showing everything.
It’s about showing the parts that helps your audience.

That’s how you build trust and influence.

2. “Just give value.”

“Value” has become the most overused, empty word in personal branding.

Value is not:

- “5 tips to improve XYZ”
- “Here’s a secret hack”
- “3 strategies you need”

Real value is:

- a belief shift
- a lesson from a mistake 
- a mindset that changes how they act 

Give perspective, not just value.
Information is cheap. Insight is rare.

“Value” doesn’t build a brand. Impact does.

3. “Just show up.”

Showing up is not enough anymore. Everyone is here.
You have to GIVE people a reason to remember you.

What to do instead:

Show up with a passion:

- a story only you can tell
- a message backed by experience
- a perspective that challenges the norm

The goal is NOT to “just be consistent”

It’s to be consistently GOOD.
