Getting go-to-market wrong in AI fintech is a timing and insight problem.

Last week, during a fireside chat at the AI Lab Supercharged Academy, supported by the Financial Conduct Authority and delivered with CFTE - Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship, we spent time on one core theme:
how founders stay ahead of the market and regulation, rather than reacting to it.

My perspective was simple:

Great GTM in regulated markets starts with knowing your customer deeply—whether that’s the end user or a financial institution—and understanding what regulation will force them to do next.

That’s where opportunity lives.

Consumer Duty created a void: millions of people are economically unviable for traditional advice, and institutions are under pressure to serve them better. That gap wasn’t obvious from market data alone; you had to read the regulatory direction and the human behaviour behind it.

AI becomes powerful when it’s designed into that space:
• Anticipating regulatory direction, not waiting for rulebooks
• Solving real customer anxiety, not just operational cost
• Creating propositions that institutions need, not just want

The strongest AI fintechs won’t chase demand. They’ll create it by sitting one step ahead of customers, markets, and regulators.

That’s the GTM mindset that scales in financial services.

The great discussion on financial health really resonated with what we’re building at Aventur,  removing complexity, listening more closely, and creating support that works for real people, not abstract models. Yesterday in London we brought together a group of innovators and industry leaders to explore how reframing ideas of financial health can shape a better future for all.

And a special thank you to Alastair Campbell who shared ideas from his new book, “Healthy Money”, which calls for those in financial services to embrace a more holistic vision of financial wellbeing. 

Participants explored a set of case study examples drawn from an ethnographic research project we carried out with a leading national UK bank, using real people’s stories to surface the “invisible economy” that so often underpins resilience and wellbeing. 

By decentring the bank and listening more closely to lived experience, the conversations highlighted how financial services can better recognise motivations, respond to emotion, and partner in new ways to support healthier financial lives.

Dublin born Mike has spent a 35+ year career working at the sharp end of finance, technology and media globally, based in Asia, the US and Europe. A passionate champion of technology, innovation and diversity. Establishing the TechGateway and Big Boost Mondays program in 2022 to promote DEI and technology, working with women in tech, non-stem, LBTQ+, and the under-represented, finding pathways to technology careers. 

Starting in 1988 as a software engineer with the original ‘fintech’ Arbat/Winter Partners, then moving client side in 1993 working at Tier 1 banks UBS, Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank. With roles in project & program management, software investment, sales, business re-engineering and global leadership. 

Leaving in 2008 to found his first start-up – ditto.tv, a specialist agency dedicated to launching fintech & emerging tech companies. Then in 2021 realising a lifetime ambition of establishing a software solution to break down the barriers of how B2B businesses share content, transform sales, marketing and training.
