Kunal Bahl couldn't crack IIT, had to leave US, and nearly lost everything.
16 years later, nobody talks about him enough.
And I think I know why.

In 2007, due to a US visa rejection he had to return back to India.

He had no plan B.

Kunal Bahl came home to Delhi, teamed up with his school friend Rohit Bansal, and started building. By 2010, Snapdeal was live. By 2014, it was valued at $6.5 billion. India's No.2 e-commerce player.

Then it almost fell apart completely.

Flipkart came calling with a merger. Kunal said no.

He restructured. Rebuilt. Rebranded under AceVector. Snapdeal IPO'd in August 2024 at a 117% listing premium. One of the most subscribed IPOs of the year.

But the real story was happening in the background since 2011.

Small cheques. Unknown founders. Zero fanfare.

→ ₹57 lakh into Urban Company. Became ₹111 crore. 200x returns.
→ Early bet on Ola. 100x+.
→ Early bet on Mamaearth. 101x at IPO.
→ Early bet on Razorpay. Now a unicorn.

250+ startups backed. Ranked No.2 angel investor in India in 2024.

And then he did something most investors wouldn't dare.

He said the word "unicorn" is wrong.

"I don't like unicorns. It's a mythical creature. But a business generating ₹100 crore in revenue, profitable, running for 15 years, that's an Indicorn."

202 such companies exist today. ₹1.51 lakh crore in combined revenue. ₹7,393 crore in combined profit.

Kunal was quietly building a new scoreboard for Indian startups entirely.

One contrarian bet after another.

He never complained. Not once.

No rant about the visa rejection. No public breakdown about Snapdeal. No bitterness when Flipkart was eating his market share. 

That's what quiet conviction actually looks like.

The founder just announced he's leaving.
Here's the full story.

Prabhkiran Singh started Bewakoof at 21.

₹30,000 in capital. A Mumbai slum for an office. Plastic chairs under a tin shed. No AC. Two IIT engineers who knew nothing about fashion and everything about showing up anyway.

That was 2011.

The name "Bewakoof" was intentional. Fashion took itself too seriously. He didn't want to play that game.

Turns out, not taking yourself too seriously is actually a good brand strategy.

• They built slowly.
• Delivered t-shirts on local trains.
• Answered customer queries themselves.
No external capital for years, just brick by brick with their own hands.

Then something shifted.

BEWAKOOF® became the first D2C fashion brand in India to cross ₹100 crore in revenue. 20,000+ orders a day. 6 million+ social media followers. A community, not just a customer base.

And today, he announced he's leaving.

Not because things went wrong. Because they went right.

In his farewell post, he wrote:
"Bewakoof raised me while I was raising it."

Most founders talk about what they built. He talked about who he became.

Learning to take punches without bitterness. Staying playful without becoming careless. Showing up when nobody was clapping.

That's 14 years of compounding.

What started as a slum office is now 22 physical stores. The dorm room idea is now a brand with a 100 year ambition.

He's leaving it better than he found it.

That's the only real measure of a founder.

Name one founder whose exit story deserves this kind of attention.

A 23 year old quits her dream job to go mop floors. 14 months later her app is valued at $100 Million.

Anjali Sardana was pursuing her dream VC internship in San Francisco.

She couldn't eat. Couldn't sleep.

Not because the job was bad. She just kept thinking about domestic workers in India. Why the market was broken. Why nobody had fixed it.

So she quit. Mid-term. Flew back.

Her hypothesis was that India has a supply shortage of domestic help and not enough workers.

She went to the field to confirm it.

What she found completely flipped the thesis.

Workers were sitting idle for months. Demand existed. Workers existed. Nobody was connecting them properly, and there was zero quality control on either side.

It was not a supply problem but a matching problem.

She rebuilt the company around that insight.

Pronto: full-stack, all in-house. Recruiting, training, background checks, scheduling. Workers arrive within 10 minutes.

By March 2026 it had
• 18,000 daily bookings across 10 cities.
• 20% week-on-week growth.
• Valuation hit $100M.

Workers on Pronto are trained in a way that if a customer disrespects them, they leave the booking immediately. Pronto backs them, no questions.

In a country where domestic workers have had zero institutional protection for decades, that's not a feel-good policy.

That's the moat.

Quality compounds. And you can't build quality on top of people who have no reason to care.

What's one thing you were completely wrong about in your field?

Peyush Bansal couldn't get into IIT. Quit his Microsoft job and went on to build India’s biggest eyewear brand.

In 2008, every major e-commerce player had already written off India's eyewear sector. Too unorganized. Too fragmented. Not worth the headache.

Which is wild, because roughly 50% of India's population needed glasses at the time. Most of them weren't wearing any. No brand they could trust. No real access. Just a massive, broken, completely ignored market.

Peyush had just quit Microsoft. He converted his car garage into an office and carried the "stay obsessed with the customer's problem" mentality.

That's genuinely what he said. No 40-slide strategy doc. Just that.

Rejected by Microsoft in year one. He just used the feedback and came back harder.

By the time he quit his Seattle job to go back to India with no safety net, he genuinely had nothing to lose.

2010: Lenskart.com launches.
2019: Becomes a Unicorn.
2020: Revenue doubles in a year, from Rs 486 crore to Rs 1,000 crore.
2023: Rs 3,780 crore.

Investors came knocking.

3 things are actually worth taking from this:

1: The market everyone's ignoring is worth a second look. Amazon passing the market doesn't mean the gap isn't real; it usually means it's harder to see than it looks.

2: One sharp principle beats a hundred slides. Peyush ran a billion-dollar company on the "stay locked on the customer" principle.

3: The rejection streak wasn't baggage. It was training. Every time he didn't get what he wanted, he figured out why and came back more prepared.

Peyush didn't find a clean opportunity. He found a sector everyone smarter than him had already dismissed, and he went in anyway.

If you had a chance, would you quit your job to start a startup?

8 years of failing startups. 1 pivot that built India's top fashion platform. 1 fractured rib that started a fitness empire.

Mukesh Bansal grew up in Haridwar. Not exactly the startup capital of the world.

He got into IIT Kanpur. Graduated, moved to Chicago, and landed a job.

Stable. Decent pay. Career on track.

He hated it.

In 1999, the dot-com boom was exploding. Every day he was reading about companies changing the world, going public overnight, and founders becoming legends.

So he quit. Moved to Silicon Valley. Tried to start a company.

Failed immediately.

But he made a smart decision to only work at early-stage startups.

For the next 8 years, he joined startups and started absorbing everything.

That invisible MBA is what built Myntra.

2007. Bengaluru. Mukesh co-founded Myntra with two others. Started with personalised merchandise: T-shirts, mugs, caps for corporates.

He studied returns obsessively and found that customers who made a successful first return spent 4-5x more than those who never returned anything.

By 2014, Flipkart came knocking with a $330M acquisition deal. Soon Mukesh joined Flipkart as Head of Commerce and Advertising.

But left in 2016.

He started taking daily walks around a lake on Sarjapur Road. One gym kept catching his eye every single day. MMA logo. Name said Cult.

He had no idea what mixed martial arts even was.

Walked in anyway.

Later he got closer to the founder, Rishabh Telang, and saw the potential. Eventually acquired Cult and co-founded Curefit with Ankit N. in 2016 to build the full fitness, food, mental health, & healthcare stack.

Cult.fit scaled to 300+ centres across India.

Here's the thing though.

Most people reading this had never heard of Mukesh Bansal.

Imagine how many founders and operators with that level of experience are sitting completely invisible right now.

Elon Musk just hired an IIT Bombay grad to help build superintelligence. His 10-year obsession is why

Devendra Chaplot graduated from IIT Bombay in 2014.

His batch went to Google and Microsoft, the usual safe bets.

He chose a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University on the topic of "Building Intelligent Autonomous Navigation Agents."

With just one obsessive question: can AI understand the physical world well enough to actually move through it?

Nobody was writing about this. Nobody was racing to fund it.

He did it anyway.

After CMU, he joined Facebook AI Research. Then got a call from a tiny Paris startup trying to take on OpenAI with a fraction of the resources.

He said yes.

That startup was Mistral AI.

As a founding team member, he helped train Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, Pixtral Large, and Pixtral 12B. Models the entire European AI industry would come to rely on.

And even while building some of the world's best language models, his real obsession never changed.

Physical AI. Robots. The real world.

CVPR PointNav Challenge, 2019. He won. CVPR ObjectNav Challenge, 2020. Won again. NeurIPS Rearrangement Challenge, 2022. Three for three.

Then Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, left to start her own lab. She called him.

He left Mistral. Joined Thinking Machine Labs as a founding member. Again.

Less than a year later, Elon Musk called.

xAI's been losing founding members. They're rebuilding. And Musk is trying to do something nobody's done before: physical AI at the scale of SpaceX. Rockets. Humanoid robots. Autonomous vehicles. All running on frontier models.

He needed someone who could train those models AND actually understand how an AI agent navigates a real room.

That profile barely exists.

Devendra spent 12 years quietly becoming it. He's 34.

Who else is building on a problem the world hasn't caught up to yet?

Meet the two brothers from Bihar who just hit $100M ARR in 8 months and broke Silicon Valley.

Mukund Jha co-founded Dunzo, India's quick-commerce startup.

It shut down. Publicly. After real scale.

Most people exit the game after that. Start consulting. Go back to a senior role. Call it "an incredible learning experience" and move on.

He didn't.

He called his twin brother Madhav Jha and started again.

Madhav wasn't a first-time guy either. PhD in Theoretical CS from Penn State. Postdoctoral fellow at Sandia National Laboratories. AI scientist at Amazon. ML Engineer at Dropbox.

The kind of engineering depth that takes 10 years to build.

Mukund brought the operator scars. Madhav brought the architecture brain.

Their thesis was simple, and in 2024 almost nobody agreed with it:

AI agents, not rigid LLMs, are the actual future of software.

So while everyone else was building another GPT wrapper and calling it a product, they built a platform where agents do the actual work. You describe what you want in plain language. Emergent builds the full-stack app, UI, backend, APIs, deployment, automatically.

No code. No technical background. Just describe it.

They launched through Y Combinator in May 2025.

3 months in: $15M ARR A few months later: $50M ARR 30 days after that: $100M ARR

Doubling ARR in a single month isn't a growth metric. That's a fundamentally different category of product-market fit.

Investors noticed.

Series A: $23M from Lightspeed, YC, Jeff Dean, and Balaji Srinivasan. Series B: $70M from Khosla Ventures and SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

Today, 5 million builders across 190 countries use the platform.

The failure at Dunzo didn't end Mukund's story. It gave him the conviction to make a harder bet the second time around.

He made $9K his first year in real estate. Then built a $5.3B business. This is the Serhant playbook.

Ryan Serhant got his real estate license on September 15, 2008.

That was the day Lehman Brothers collapsed.

He made $9,000 his entire first year. Couldn't afford his NYC rent. Most people would've quit.

He didn't. But the interesting part isn't the survival story.

It's what he built when he finally had leverage.

In 2020, he left his old firm and launched SERHANT. during the height of a pandemic. From day one, he called it a "content-to-commerce" company.

Not a brokerage. A content company.

He built SERHANT. Studios in-house to produce content that fuels his sales engine. He got on Netflix. Season 1 of Owning Manhattan hit the top 10 in 40 countries and triggered a 400% jump in inbound agent leads.

A TV show was his recruiting funnel. Damn.

While his competitors were running ads, Serhant was building media assets that compound.

That's the shift most people miss.

He didn't just sell real estate. He made real estate content so good that people came to him to join, buy, and learn.

The product became the content. The content became the distribution.

That's a different game entirely.

In 2026, attention is the most valuable asset a founder can own. Not just paid attention. Earned attention. The kind that compounds every time you post something that makes someone think "this person actually gets it."

Most founders are still waiting until they feel "ready" to post. Until the product is polished. Until they have a big enough story.

That's the wrong order.

Start posting. Build in public. Make people feel like they'd be missing out if they weren't following you.

Anthropic has 3,000 employees, but their entire marketing operation is run by one person. Here's how:

His name is Austin Lau. For 10 months, he ran Anthropic's entire growth marketing. Paid search, paid social, SEO, email, app store optimization. Alone. At a $380 billion company.

Here's how the system actually worked.

He'd export existing ads with their performance data as a CSV. Claude Code would scan everything, identify what was underperforming, then generate fresh copy variations automatically.

But instead of one prompt doing all the work, he built two separate agents.

One tuned specifically for headlines (30 characters). One for descriptions (90 characters). Each optimized for its constraint.

The output quality wasn't even close to what a single prompt could do.

Those variations went straight into a Figma plugin that swapped them into ad templates.

100 creatives. Half a second per batch. What used to take hours of manual copy-pasting.

Then he connected Claude directly to Meta's Ads API through a custom MCP server. He'd ask "which ads had the best conversion this week?" and get an answer in real time.

Every experiment, every hypothesis, every result got logged. So the next time he ran a batch, Claude already knew what worked and what didn't from every round before it.

The system got smarter every cycle on its own.

Ad creation went from 2 hours down to 15 minutes. Output went up by 10x.

Industry benchmark says a company their size needs 150 to 200 marketers.

Austin just made that number irrelevant.

Most people use AI to go faster. He built something that compounded. That's a completely different game.

She called it the "silver tsunami" before anyone was talking about it.

So she started buying. Then she built Contrarian Thinking to teach others to do the same.

Here's where most people miss the real play.

She didn't just build a media company. She built a personal brand so loud that the market came to her.

3M+ followers. 100M views/month. Sponsorships at $30K per post. An education arm doing $4.1M/month.

The personal brand wasn't a side project. It was the engine.

It funded deal flow. It built trust at scale. It made her the first name people think of when they hear "buy a business."

That's the part most founders skip.

They're great operators. They have real results. But nobody knows they exist.

Your personal brand is either working for you or it isn't. There's no in-between.

Codie understood this early. That's why she owns 25+ businesses doing $50M/year while most people are still figuring out what to post.

Atlassian didn't fire 1,600 people because of AI. AI just exposed a model that was already cracking.

The company hasn't turned a profit in ten years. Stock's down 80% from its 2021 peak of $458. And last quarter, despite 23% revenue growth, their net loss went from $38.2M to $42.6M.

Atlassian charges per seat. Per human, per month. Jira, Confluence, Trello, all of it. The whole model assumes more users = more revenue.

But AI agents don't need seats.

When your customers replace headcount with agents, revenue per customer drops even if usage goes up. Mike Cannon-Brookes knows this. 

He was on the a16z podcast this week saying consumption pricing confuses customers, token billing is "like a casino," per-seat still makes sense.

He's probably right that customers hate token billing. But "they prefer seats for now" isn't really a strategy when your entire business depends on "for now" holding.

Meanwhile they spent $1B on DX and $610M on The Browser Company. Both AI acquisitions. Both last year. While losing money every single quarter. (Visionary or panic. The next two years will sort that out.)

If you're one of the people affected by layoffs due to AI:

• Don't hide the layoff. Don't explain it away. Be straightforward about it and then immediately redirect to what you did next.

• Pick one real problem. Solve it using AI. Document the whole thing. Put it on LinkedIn. Tag the product people at companies you want to work at.

A portfolio of real work does more than a resume ever will. Especially right now, when everyone is claiming AI skills but almost nobody can show them.

"Even within coding, which you'd think is already a specialization, OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude are very different in what they're good at."

We've all been watching this AI race, like one model is going to win everything. The whole market is priced around that idea. OpenAI vs Anthropic vs Google. Pick a side. Back your horse.

That's not what's actually playing out.

Models are fracturing into specialists. One dominates syntax. One dominates architecture. One dominates visual output. One dominates reasoning chains.

The gap between them isn't closing over time. It's growing.

And the smartest operators figured this out early. They stopped picking sides and started building routing layers instead.

Perplexity is the clearest proof.

They didn't train a model. They built a platform that routes between 19 of them in real time, picks the specialist best suited for your exact task.

You just give the command. The system figures out who executes it.

If your team is locked into one provider right now, you've quietly hardcoded a ceiling into your own stack.

Here's what your split should look like:
• Use o1 when the problem requires thinking before answering.
• Use Claude for code. It doesn't just write it, it explains every decision it makes.
• Use DeepSeek for high-volume code generation.
• Use Midjourney for generating images.
• Use Runway Gen-3 for generating videos.
• Use Mistral when data cannot leave your servers. Legal, finance, and healthcare.
• Use Perplexity when you need answers from the live web.

The operators who win this decade won't be the ones who picked the right model.

They'll be the ones who built the layer that picks for them.

The O&G industry holds decades of knowledge, but the question is whether you're the one delivering it or leaving it to someone else.

A Chinese AI company went public in January. By February, it had 1/3 of Anthropic's usage at 1/10th the price.

The reason is simple: performance matching Claude Opus 4.6, at one-tenth the price.

By the time UBS ran the numbers, MiniMax's AI usage had already hit one-third of Anthropic's Claude. That's not a side project. That's a pricing story with real developer behavior behind it.

UBS initiated with a buy. Price target 1000 HKD. That's 30%+ upside from where it traded last week.

Their optimistic scenario puts MiniMax at 3% of the global enterprise AI market. $41 billion in segment revenue. Video generation adds another ~$5 billion. AI companionship, ~$4 billion.

What makes this different from the usual "China AI" headline is the breadth.

MiniMax isn't just a text model. They're doing video generation, ElevenLabs-style audio, and AI companionship, all under one roof. 

While Zhipu focuses on coding and Moonshot on agentic tasks, MiniMax is building the full stack.

That's a whole different kind level.
